Sticks Down!

Over the years, the field hockey stick has

become a high-tech product. Originally

built entirely of wood, it has evolved,

and is composed today of composite

materials such as carbon, glass fibre or

even Kevlar. Its weight has also lowered

over the years to approach 550 grams

on average. However, take note that

players must use approved sticks during

national and international competitions to

prevent accidents due to balls travelling

at excessive speeds, especially during

penalty corners.

As such, the Official Rules of the

International Federation contain many

restrictions on the diameter of the stick

and even its curvature. Thus, before

each major competition, the sticks for

each player are checked and validated

by tournament officials. This involves

checking the curvature (which must not

exceed 25 mm) using nothing but a two-

euro coin held vertically that may not

pass under the stick when placed on a

flat surface.

What else? Since May 2014, the IHF

has decided to limit maximum stick length

to 105 centimetres. This was in response

to an outcry after Jeremy Gucassoff, the

Belgian keeper, used a special stick during

shoot-out sessions.

Today at 4 PM a prestigious event takes place that no hockey fan of Asia would miss. This event is comparable to Argentina-Brazil in football, Nadal-Federer in tennis, New Zealand-France in rugby. With a spirit of true sportsmanship as well as unprecedented determination Pakistan and India will meet in the HWL competition.

Muhammad Imran, the Pakistani star player, explains their preparation for HWL: “The run up to this HWL tournament has not been easy. There were quite a few hick-ups in order to get here. But we are here now and are not worried.” Regarding the game against India, Muhammad’s attitude is quite cool: “ For us players it is a normal match, a match like so many others.” Indian top player Sardar Singh looks forward to the game against Pakistan which, he is convinced, will be played in respectful spirit. “ I am looking forward to a great game with attacking and attractive hockey for a huge and enthusiastic crowd”.

The fans in the stadium and billions of people around the world will eagerly follow the movements of Sardar Singh, Muhammad Imran, and their teammates. This match will be full of emotions on and off the pitch. This is a game you don’t want to miss.

FLICK & BULLY

Right next to India, Pakistan is the other “enfant terrible” of hockey worldwide. This

country also dominated international tournaments for over forty years, before little by

little they started creeping back to the other end of the top 10 world rankings. World

champions a good four times (a record), after several years, the country needed to

cope with a variety of crises. In recent years there was some major tension between

the players and the Federation concerning training conditions, contracts and non-

payment of salaries. Recently it appears that the Pakistanis have overcome their

differences in order to achieve some excellent results at major tournaments. They

were finalists in the Champions Trophy 2014 in Bhabaneswar and silver medallists

at the Asian Games. While the country remains in search of a worthy successor for

Sohail Abbas, a real national hero,

and holder of the greatest number

of goals on the international scene

(338!), it quickly needs to return to

the world’s top 6 and once again

earn numerous trophies.

Bas les sticks !

Le stick, ou crosse, en français, ou même

bâton, en français nord-américain, est

devenu, au fil des années, un produit de

haute technologie. A l’origine, fabriqué

entièrement en bois, il a évolué et est

composé, aujourd’hui, de matières

composites comme le carbone, la fibre

de verre ou même le Kevlar. Son poids

a également diminué au cours des

années pour approcher les 550 grammes,

en moyenne. Mais attention, pas

question d’utiliser n’importe quel stick

pour les compétitions nationales et

internationales afin d’éviter les accidents

avec une vitesse de balle trop importante,

surtout sur p.c.. Voilà pourquoi, il existe

de nombreuses restrictions concernant

le diamètre de la crosse ou même sa

courbure dans le règlement officiel de

la Fédération internationale. C’est ainsi

qu’avant chaque grande compétition, les

sticks de chaque joueur sont contrôlés

et validés par les officiels du tournoi.

On vérifie la courbure (qui ne doit pas

excéder les 25 mm) avec comme seul

outil une pièce de deux euros tenue

verticalement qui ne peut pas passer

sous le stick posé sur une surface plane.

What else? Depuis mai 2014, la FIH

a décidé de limiter la longueur maximale

des sticks à 105 centimètres. Une réponse

exigée par certains, suite à l’utilisation

par Jeremy Gucassoff, le gardien belge,

d’un stick spécial lors des séances de

Shoot-Out.

Aujourd’hui à 16h00, a lieu le match de prestige qu’aucun fan de hockey en Asie ne voudrait manquer, à l’instar en football d’Argentine-Brésil, en tennis de Nadal-Federer et en rugby de Nouvelle-Zélande-France. Dans le respect de la sportivité, mais avec une détermination certaine, le Pakistan et l’Inde s’affronteront à la Hockey World League. Le joueur pakistanais vedette Muhammad Imran nous explique la préparation de son équipe pour cette HWL : « La préparation pour la HWL n’a pas été facile.

Nous avons dû surmonter quelques obstacles pour arriver en Belgique. Mais nous sommes ici maintenant et nous nous concentrons entièrement sur le tournoi. Concernant la rencontre face à l’Inde, Muhammad est plutôt décontracté : « Pour nous, les joueurs, c’est un match normal ; une rencontre comme les autres ». La star et capitaine de l’équipe indienne, Sardar Singh, a hâte de jouer le match contre le Pakistan qui, il en est convaincu, se jouera dans un esprit fair-play. «Je me réjouis de cette rencontre qui s’annonce superbe, avec du hockey offensif et agréable à voir pour les nombreux supporters enthousiastes».

Les supporters dans le stade et des millions de personnes dans le monde suivront avec ferveur les faits et gestes des Sardar Singh et autres Muhammad Imran, dans un match qui s’annonce haut en couleurs, passionné et passionnant. Un rendez-vous à ne pas manquer!

Aux côtés de l’Inde, le Pakistan a été l’autre enfant terrible de la discipline au niveau mondial. Le pays a, lui aussi, dominé, durant plus de quarante ans, les tournois internationaux avant de retomber petit à petit aux portes du Top 10 mondial. Champion du monde à quatre reprises (un record), le pays doit pourtant, depuis plusieurs années, affronter des crises diverses et variées. C’est ainsi qu’il existe des tensions profondes entre les joueurs et la Fédération concernant leurs conditions d’entraînement, les contrats mais aussi le non-paiement des salaires. Récents médaillés d’argent aux Jeux asiatiques, et finalistes du Champions Trophy 2014, à Bhubaneswar, les Pakistanais parviennent néanmoins à surpasser ces différends pour réaliser d’excellents résultats lors des tournois majeurs. Et même si le pays est toujours à la recherche du digne successeur de Sohail Abbas, véritable héros national, et détenteur du plus grand nombre de buts sur la scène internationale (338 !), il devrait, rapidement, réintégrer le top 6 mondial et remporter à nouveau de nombreux trophées.

Omlaag met die stick!

De stick is in de loop der jaren uitgegroeid

tot een technologisch hoogstandje. In de

begindagen was hij volledig van hout

gemaakt, maar de tijden zijn veranderd.

Tegenwoordig bestaat een stick uit

composietmaterialen, zoals koolstof,

glasvezel en zelfs kevlar. De stick is

met de jaren ook aanzienlijk lichter

geworden en weegt nu gemiddeld 550

gram. Maar opgelet: je mag niet gelijk

welke stick gebruiken tijdens nationale

en internationale wedstrijden. Die regel

is ingevoerd om ongelukken met een te

snelle bal te voorkomen, vooral bij een

strafcorner.

In het officiële reglement van de

internationale federatie staan dan ook

diverse beperkingen voor de diameter

en de kromming van de stick. Voor elke

belangrijke wedstrijd wordt de stick

van iedere speler gecontroleerd en

goedgekeurd door de wedstrijdofficials.

De kromming (die niet meer mag

bedragen dan 25 mm) wordt bijvoorbeeld

gecontroleerd met een verticaal

gehouden muntstuk van 2 euro. Dat mag

niet uitsteken boven de stick die op een

vlakke ondergrond staat.

What else? Sinds mei 2014 mag een

stick nog maximaal 105 centimeter lang

zijn van de FIH. Die regel kwam er na

enkele reacties op de speciale stick die

de Belgische doelman Jeremy Gucassoff

gebruikte tijdens de shoot-outs.

Vrijdag 25 juni 2015 om 16u00 vindt een groots sportief evenement plaats dat geen enkele Aziatische hockeyfan zou wil missen. De confrontatie kan vergeleken worden met andere spectaculaire duels zoals Real Madrid tegen Barcelona, Federer versus Nadal, of België-Nederland. Vandaag zullen India en Pakistan elkaar bekampen in een geest van sportiviteit en respect, maar met ongekende vastberadenheid.

De Pakistaanse sterspeler Muhammed Imran legt hun voorbereiding op de WHL uit: “De aanloop naar de WHL was niet makkelijk. Onderweg naar België lagen er enkele hindernissen. Maar we zijn hier geraakt en focussen nu volledig op de wedstrijden.” Over de wedstrijd tegen India antwoordt Muhammad cool: “Voor onze spelers is het een normale wedstrijd, zoals zovele anderen.” Sardar Singh, de Indische topspeler en kapitein, kijkt uit naar de wedstrijd tegen Pakistan waarvan hij overtuigd is dat ze in een respectvolle sfeer gespeeld zal worden: “Ik kijk uit naar een geweldige match met aanvallend en aantrekkelijk hockey en een groot en enthousiast publiek !”

U in het stadion en vele miljoenen mensen over de hele wereld zullen hun helden Sardar Singh, Muhammad Imran en vele anderen kunnen aanmoedigen in een passionele strijd. Mis dit niet!

Naast India is Pakistan het andere enfant terrible in het hockey op wereldniveau. Ook dit

land domineerde namelijk meer dan veertig jaar alle internationale toernooien, waarna het

langzaamaan uit de top tien van de wereldranglijst verdween. Het land werd vier keer

wereldkampioen (een absoluut record), maar krijgt al jaren de ene crisis na de andere te

verduren. Zo zijn er al jaren spanningen tussen de spelers en de federatie. De spelers

nemen namelijk geen genoegen met hun trainingsinfrastructuur en hun contracten.

Dat hun salarissen niet worden uitbetaald, valt evenmin in goede aarde. Toch lijken de

Pakistanen hun geschillen opzij te kunnen zetten en zetten ze tijdens grote toernooien puike

resultaten neer. Zo behaalden ze onlangs de zilveren medaille tijdens de Aziatische Spelen

en speelden ze de finale van de Champions Trophy 2014 in Bhubaneswar. En hoewel

Pakistan nog steeds op zoek is naar een waardige opvolger van Sohail Abbas – de nationale

held bij uitstek en recordhouder met

het grootste aantal doelpunten in

internationale competities (338!) –

moet het land snel weer een plaatsje

in de top zes van de wereld veroveren

en nieuwe trofeeën mee naar huis

zien te nemen.
