HV Sets- HDG, A490 equivalent High-Strength Structural Bolting
Assemblies for Preloading - Made in Germany -
August Friedberg GmbH
NASCC 17-19. April 2013
Developing Fasteners since 1884
Engineers considering 150KSI hot dip galvanized fasteners will find the following benefits for their project:
Highest corrosion resistance achieved with hot dip galvanization
HV fasteners set designed as one unit
Suitability for preloading of the set calibrated by the manufacturer
Efficient connection design with more options than ASTM A490
Excellent lot traceability of each set due to ID mark on the fasteners
Saving assembly time and costs
Reduction of maintenance costs 2/20

Product Standards
HV Sets are currently utilized around the world in the most demanding environments in steel structures.
These include thousands of onshore and offshore wind towers erected across the United States. Global players in the wind industry including- General Electric, Vestas and GAMESA have trusted FRIEDBERG to supply hot dip galvanized bolts and double ended studs for decades.
They can also found in some of the world's tallest buildings, bridges, offshore platforms and most roller coasters where critical fasteners are vital.

World Wide Projects
You may be concerned that hot dip galvanization of high strength fasteners will cause hydrogen and liquid metal induced embrittlement.
This process has been refined for over 60 years, so let us show you how it works with high certainty!
Key points for manufacturing HDG HV Sets:
Utilizes a unique high quality raw material steel alloy
Highly controlled, precision manufacturing processes
Highly controlled hot dip galvanization processes
Hot Dip Galvanization

Hot Dip Galvanization
Essential Parameters: Restriction of phosphorus P and sulfur S in the raw material Limiting the non-metallic inclusions in the raw material Avoid using d-Ferrite due to insufficient pretreatment/cleaning Precision heat treating that avoids carburization Restriction of the maximum tensile capacity to 1170 N/mm² Restriction of the maximum surface hardness to 375 HV 0.3 Use of proven inhibitors in the pickling bath Limiting the pickling time Defined zinc bath concentration according to DASt Guideline 022 Defined zinc bath temperature range depending on the bolt size … Long established manufacturer and galvanizer know-How !!!

Hot Dip Galvanization
Degreasing with prior shot blasting (optional)
Acid pickling (defined inhibitors, acid concentration, pickling time)
Tempering process if necessary
Application of a special flux material with subsequent drying phase
Zinc Bath Dip (defined zinc bath consistence and dipping time)
Centrifuge process to avoid zinc residuals mainly in the threads
Quenching to reduce undefined layer growth and similar optical appearance

Larger wrench size for uniform stress concentration under head
Larger under head radius for lower notch effect
special rounded thread run-out for decreasing notch effect

Friedberg Fasteners have their own brain.
The entire manufacturing process is fully traceable from the Material Test Reports of the raw materials, the manufacturing processes, heat treatment and the galvanizing.
All information for each production batch manufactured is fully documented going back over 20 years.
Further specifics are a fully traceability of fasteners

Bolt Traceability
HV-Nuts are hot dip galvanized, tapped after galvanization process and afterwards lubricated by the manufacturer to a calibrated torque-tension relation. No additional lubrication on site is necessary and should be avoided! Threads are oversized to a tolerance grade 6AZ according to ISO 965-5 and therefore marked with sign „Z“.

Marking H or HV
Marking of the washer on its bearing surface. Washer shows internal and external chamfers. Chamfers are oriented to the hexagon bolt head and nut bearing surface. The external chamfer shows the existence of an internal chamfer for this system. Traceability through the delivery notes.
