Southport Middle School received top
honors from the state and the Univer-
sity of South Florida again this year for
our PBIS program. The core beliefs of
PBIS are that we recognize and devel-
op our student’s positive attributes
while preventing inappropriate or
disrespectful behavior.
Each day our students recite our
school-wide expectations along with
our morning news anchors. Teachers
recognize students who follow those
expectations throughout the day
through the daily distribution of Cane
Cash.
Students whose continued efforts of
meeting the school wide expectations are
recognized through the Student of the
Month Recognition Celebration, monthly
dress down days and team based events, as
well as school wide events.
This programs helps develop our students
into compassionate and respectful citizens
of our community
Please join us for McTeacher's night at McDonald's on Thursday, November 16th from 5PM until 7PM at the McDonald's on US 1 and Prima Vista. There will be loads of fun activities for the kids, and the best part will be seeing our teachers and our administrators, Ms. Telese and Mrs. Manchester, working at the restaurant!
McDonald’s is one of our generous business partners that donates to our Student of the Month and on this date will also be donating a percentage of their sales for the day to our school. We look for-ward to seeing Southport students and their families for a meal and some fun in support of Southport.

Student Led Conferences
Southport Middle School Sixth Grade Retreat
Southport Middle School’s sixth grade students enjoyed an engaging, positive, and busy day at our annual Sixth
Grade Student Retreat. This year’s theme was respect.
To begin the day, students met in the gym to give each other positive affirmations in an unusual game of
“musical” chairs. They were then split into small groups with adult team leaders and sent out to participate in
various team building activities throughout the day to play games and take part in small group discussions. In
their groups, they wrote motivational letters to their future selves, which will be returned to each student later in
the year for them to see their progress. They read their Palanca letters of encouragement from teachers, staff,
and family members and then reflected on the day’s activities. At the end of the day, students were taken for a
blindfolded trust walk for “a day in a life of a middle school student” where they met teachers, parents, and then
were welcomed into the Media Center to enjoy conversation together and later the Halloween Dance, sponsored
by Student Council.
Jeane Bartlet, Treasure Coast Council Director for Girls on the Run and Josh Rowell, Worship Pastor from First
Baptist Church of Port St Lucie, gave inspirational speeches about important topics such as respect, potential,
self-respect, self-esteem, and bullying.
The Retreat was a wonderful opportunity for all students and facilitators to build long lasting relationships with
each other!

Dear Parents/Guardians,
We would like to inform you of the opportunity for your child to participate in a private screening of the movie
“Wonder” for Southport Middle School students. The movie is based on The New York Times Bestselling Novel by R.J.
Palacio. It is a heartwarming story about a 10-year-old boy named August Pullman. It contains uplifting messages and life
lessons suitable for middle school children.
The date of the event is December 9th, 2017 at the Treasure Coast Mall Stadium 16. The cost of the movie is $9 payable
by cash or check to Southport Middle School, which we will be collecting from students during home room beginning
November 13th. The concession stand will be open and any snacks that your child may want to purchase will be in
addition to the $9 entry to the theater. Parents are responsible for transportation to and from the theater. The
auditorium access begins at 9:30 AM, at which time teachers will be there to distribute tickets. Movie start time is
10AM and it is 1 hour and 53 minutes long. There will be no adult supervision after 12:15PM, so please be sure to pick
your child up promptly after the movie is over.
Since we need to ensure that we have the minimum of 100 attendees to reserve the theater, the first 100 students to
turn in their permission slips and monies will be able to attend the private screening. If you would like to chaperone,
please make sure you have filled out a volunteer application form and have been approved by the St. Lucie School Board
at least 2 weeks prior to the movie. This form can be found on the St. Lucie County website.
If you have any questions, comments or suggestions do not hesitate to email or call 772-337-5908.
Thank you,
