Dear PUMA® Knife Fan,
Thank you for reviewing the new PUMA® 2009 knife catalog. Since it was formed on the Wupper River in 1769, PUMA® has set the standard that established Solingen, Germany as the world’s premier knife manufacturing center. PUMA® is, in fact, the 8th oldest trademark in Germany. PUMA® has been distributed in the United States since 1957 and has established a strong reputation for high-quality hunting, sporting and gentleman’s knives.
Hunters and craftsmen know and trust PUMA®’s performance, heritage and technology. The highest grades of stainless steel, innovative designs, genuine stag handles, and traditional German craftsmanship are why PUMA® knives are considered at the top of every major ranking of classic hunting and sporting knives. Key innovations include the PUMA® White Hunter, the Duke, The Prince, and the Earl. Both my Dad and I have carried a PUMA® knife for many years and I am proud to be part of taking this high-quality brand to the next level.
2009 represents a new chapter in the long history of PUMA® in North America. By establishing The PUMA® Knife Company USA , I am personally setting the goal for myself and the rest of our U.S. Sales and Marketing team to always supply the highest standards of service to all PUMA® customers. We would like to hear your ideas, and we welcome input on our web site (www.pumaknifecom-
panyusa.com.)
Please enjoy this review of our 2009 product line, and once again discover why PUMA® knives have been the world’s standard since 1769.
Sincerely,
Bob CarpenterPresident
The Puma is considered the best big game hunter in North America. It survives and thrives by hunting white tail deer, mule deer, elk, and other big game animals. The PUMA has the widest range of any predator in North America and hunts in every North American habitat. With incredible speed and agility, razor sharp claws and teeth, the Puma was chosen as a fi tting symbol of the PUMA® Knife Company over 240 years ago. The PUMA also goes by the name of Mountain Lion, Catamount, Cougar, Panther, and Felis concolor.

Lots of companies talk about the quality of their steel. PUMA® proves it. We proof every single PUMA® knife made in Europe for hardness. If you examine the right hand side of your knife, you will see a small indented dot on the blade. This small dot is the “proof mark”
from a Rockwell hardness tester. Using a diamond-pointed needle, every knife made in Solingen and Spain is tested for hardness. This needle causes the proof mark that is a symbol of a PUMA and is your personal assurance that your knife will deliver the PUMA® quality promise. Before we package our knives, we know for sure that they deliver the right degree of hardness. If it does not pass, it does not ship.
The steel used to make PUMA German knives is the best knife steel in the world. The proper amount of carbon makes a knife easy to sharpen and hold a cutting edge, but
it also allows a knife to rust more easily unless other trace elements are added to protect oxidation. In our 440C steel, we add about 1% carbon for a great edge and about 17% chromium to maintain the temper but inhibit rust. About 0.35% Silicon is also added to the base alloy to deoxidize the steel and further stabilize the blade. Additionally, other trace elements such as manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, and molybdenum are added
to increase the ability of the steel to form an edge and hold it once formed. These trace elements cause the molecules to align more evenly when cooling to give better structural strength and consistency. After the initial steel bars are formed, blades of models such as the White Hunter are then hot-drop forged. The steel bars are heated to between 3150 and 4200 degrees Fahenheit. Once heated, the blade is placed between two dies and mechanically forged under 2200 pounds of pressure to fi t the shape of the dies. The hot drop forging process not only shapes the blade, it also once again improves the molecular structure of the steel. Once the PUMA® blade is forged, it is tempered and hand fi nished in 22 separate steps by skilled craftsmen, many of whom come from families that have been making PUMA® knives for literally 10 generations. Each step uses increasingly fi ne lubricants, oil coolants, and special polishing grease. One of every 100 blades made in Solingen is intentionally broken and inspected with a microscope to verify that the steel has been formed to specifi cations. This is a more expensive way to make knives, but we know that every knife that bears the PUMA proof mark really does deliver the promise of the best knife in the world.

PUMA® Gold series – these knives are made in Solingen, Germany and have long set the standard for the ultimate hunting knife. Whether for skinning, caping, or general work, PUMA® knives are the best you can get. The stag handles are formed from the shed antlers of Wild Stag Deer and each stag-handled knife is a truly unique, one-of-a-kind tool. Each scale (handle) is boiled, stretch and dried over a period of weeks. It is then individually cut and hand
fi tted to your knife. Depending on the model, brass rivets are then used to attach the scales to the knife and they are welded together. The rivet heads are then fi led and fi nally burnished off for the best fi t and function imaginable. While this old-fashioned manufacturing method is more expensive, we think this is the way to make a one-of-a-kind knife. The handle edges are rounded for comfort. Hold a PUMA® knife in your hand, and feel the difference. Kraton and wood handled-knives are modern versions of the traditional stag handle knife.

These German-made folding knives use high grade stainless steel and scales (handles), along with high-quality springs and locks. Mounting springs and locks is a special art for highly skilled craftsmen who assembles the parts and punches, then mills and hardens the spring and lock, and then fi nally grinds the pieces to fi t a specifi c knife. Solid nickel or brass bolsters are designed to keep the fi ngers away from the blade edge. The beveled PUMA® clip-point is designed to maximize strength while making it easier to get a superb edge.

PUMA® Damascus Blades - are forged in the tradition of ancient knifesmiths. Numerous sheets of steel are folded and forged again and again to form the interlocking pattern characteristic of Damascus steel. Damascus steel is not only beautiful, the multiple layers are practical because the multiple layers act work together to slice very effectively. Each knife with a Damascus blade has a pattern as unique as a fi ngerprint.

Generally speaking, your knife does not need a lot of care. With a few common-sense tips, your knife will not only last your
lifetime but that of your children or whomever is lucky enough to have it passed down to them.

• Clean your knife after use. Blood or dirt left on a blade for a long period of time can mar the knife fi nish.
• Keep your knife away from extreme heat. Excessive heat can cause the handles to deform or crack and in very extreme cases, the steel to lose its temper (the ability to hold and edge.)• Oil the hinges occasionally. A very fi ne coating is suffi cient.
CARE FOR YOUR KNIFE
• Once you have achieved a sharp blade, maintain the edge alignment after use with a sharpening steel. A few occasional strokes with a steel at a 20 degree angle will keep your edge sharp for a long time and signifi cantly increase the time between when your blade needs to be sharpened.
• Use your knife for what it is designed for – Cutting. Don’t use the blade for prying, opening cans, as a screw driver, etc. This is not only bad for the knife, it could be bad for you as you might hurt yourself. It will also void your warranty.
• On multiblade knives, open only one blade at a time. This will prevent damage to the springs that hold the blade in place.
