Happy New Half of the Rotary Year! Just yesterday, each of us made our resolutions for the 2015-16 Rotary year, but that was six months ago on July 1st. Now is the time to evaluate our progress. Celebrate our successes! Pre-pare to finish each of the items that we have committed to do.

This is Vocational Service Month in the Rotary World. Our own Vocational Training Team had a

successful mission to Haiti. They trained health care workers, while treating and examining over

700 women. Invite Nyron McLean or one of his team to be your club program this month and in the coming months.

We have a great opportunity to share our knowledge and learn internationally from the Vocational Training

Team, that is joining us from Brazil. This is an educational training trip for the Brazilian team. Please check the

schedule and make an effort to meet and welcome them to our district. They will be staying through the Rotary

World Peace Conference.

We, also, have an opportunity to meet and share with the Rotary Friendship Exchange from Russia and enjoy the

talents of the world class violinists, the Virtuosos of Yakutia.

The Rotaract team members from Cal State University San Bernardino are putting together a list of college stu-

dents, who are interested in participating with our Rotarian business leaders in a mentoring program. We have

mentoring programs in our high schools, but are now extending this to the college level. For those Rotarians who

are interested in participating, please contact Susan Kean and Cyrus Jose. This is a wonderful opportunity to share

our knowledge and career experiences with the generation who will take on greater challenges in our business

world.

high school level? Are you involved with mock interviews, career day, job shadowing? Please send your articles to

Paul Hoffman to include in this newsletter. You can also job shadow in your own club. Are your club’s officers-to-

for next year? Now is the perfect time to begin this process. Success breeds success!

We thank you for what you are yet to accomplish. As you resolve to finish the year on the highest level, chal-lenge each other to save one more life, find one more homeless veteran a full time job, help one more student graduate from high school, send one more student to RYLA or PRYDE, induct one more member to experience the joy of service. Send one more student to the Interact Peace Conference. Help one more member and one more college student to attend the Rotary World Peace Conference on January 15 & 16. This is a perfect op-portunity not only to attend an International Convention in your own backyard, it is an opportunity to take on bigger projects at home in our own district and around the world. Together, we WILL “Make the Impossible…Possible” in District 5330 and beyond! Thank you!

Membership Corner

by Ricardo Loretta, District Membership Chair

As we hit the halfway mark in the Rotary year, the view from Membership Corner is encouraging, yet challenging. Specifically:

Growth. Our total district member growth from July 1 to December 29 as shown on Rotary.org is 63, somewhat less than we reported at the recent President’s Advance breakfast, due to “roster cleanups” for calendar year end. That rate of travel is far below what is needed to hit the full year projection of plus 410 made at PETS last February and again ratified in December at Pres Advance. All club presidents have been sent the latest spreadsheet showing status by club. It shows that most clubs have to really kick their membership growth activities into a high-er gear, if goals are going to be met.

Under water clubs. Another challenge we face is the number of clubs which are below the mini-mum needed to charter a Rotary club, 20. We encourage leaders in those clubs to reach out to their Assistant Governor, our Membership Team, a Past District Governor, and me for assis-

tance. We must try to get all clubs to 20 or above.

Rotary.org registration. Not all newly inducted members may be reflected in the Rotary.org web-site. Sadly, any new member who is not registered is not receiving The Rotarian magazine and is not covered by insurance for Rotary events. We want to remedy this, so if any club pres-ident has any doubt on whether members are properly registered, kindly call me.

Extension meetings. We are aware of potential expansion efforts through new clubs, extension meetings or satellite clubs. Several of these are being worked on in the desert, as well as in Joshua Tree, Moreno Valley, and Big Bear, to name a few. We definitely want to pursue these opportunities, especially when they mean making Rotary available to prospects who are pres-ently not enjoying the benefits of being a Rotarian!

Contest for Second Half! We are developing an incentive game for clubs to join in as they wres-tle with membership issues. Details, complete with cool prizes, will be forthcoming in first week January.

Thoughts From Facebook. If you participate in Facebook, I recommend you check out the page: “Rotary Membership – Community Organization.” It frequently shares posts which provide good food for thought. Here’s one from Dec 29:

Will Rotary, Hanging on Service, Hang Itself?

Rotarian Jim Henry sent in this post: “Several years ago, Rotary International contracted with Levy

Marketing Research to explore non-Rotarian interests in Rotary. In Levy Marketing’s 2009 report titled

Non-Rotarian Focus Groups – US Markets, a 30 – 45 year old Chicago professional female, respond-

ing to Rotary’s volunteer service activities, said, quote, “I don’t need the title of Rotarian to do any of

these things, I do that stuff already.” unquote. Service to others, serving the community, or even Rota-

ry’s motto, Service above Self, does not differentiate local Rotary clubs from other charitable or ser-

vice organizations. Clubs must differentiate to retain and attract local business, professional, and com-

munity leaders. Whether we Rotarians admit it or not, these people already are, as the Chicago fe-

male said, ‘doing that stuff already.’ While Service above Self is a wonderful motto and annual

themes could be effective in inspiring leadership teams, they do not differentiate Rotary in the

eyes of potential Rotarians because Rotary is not What Rotary Does; Rotary is Who Rotarians Are.

Jim Says, “I have spent over forty-five of my seventy-seven years as a Rotarian. In that time I have

participated in ‘doing that stuff’ inside and outside the realm of Rotary. I have remained in Rotary, not

because of ‘that stuff’ that was or is being done by the club, Rotary International, or The Rotary Foun-

dation. I have remained a Rotarian because I like to associate with leaders; people who get things

done; people who make an impact in our community and the world.”

Thank you Jim for these thoughts

BASIC EDUCATION AND LITERACY

Dennis E. Spurgin, DC

Basic education and literacy depend on the ability to have children survive to an educational

age. Therefore it is first dependent on the other areas of focus functioning. Where there are

children who have reached the proper age a sustainable program must be developed. For this

to be done requires developing programs that have long term structure and administration

with local individuals who are trained for the work that needs to be done and have the ability to

perpetuate the training. In addition it means that long term funding must be established.

Basic Education and Literacy

Rotary supports activities and training to improve education for all children and literacy for children and adults. Area of Focus Statement of Purpose and Goals TRF enables Rotarians to ensure that all people have sustainable access to basic education and liter-acy by: 1. Involving the community to support programs that strengthen the capacity of communities to pro-vide basic education and literacy to all;

2. Increasing adult literacy in communities;

3. Working to reduce gender disparity in education;

4. Supporting studies for career-minded professionals related to basic education and literacy. Parameters for Eligibility TRF considers activities targeting the following to be within the scope of the basic education and liter-acy area of focus: 1. Access to quality basic primary and secondary education;

2. Educating adults in literacy;

3. Providing training in teaching literacy, curriculum development and school administration;

4. Strengthening educational experience through improved materials and facilities;

5. Community management of education systems;

6. Vocational training teams supporting the above activities;

7. School desk purchases, when accompanied by a detailed and verifiable Continued page 13

plan to improve basic education and literacy;

8. Scholarships for graduate-level study in programs related to basic education and literacy. TRF considers activities targeting the following to be outside the scope of the basic education and lit-eracy area of focus and as such are not eligible for global grant funding: 1. Projects that consist exclusively of equipment purchases;

2. Projects that provide tuition or school supplies without the means for the community to provide these in the future. Elements of Successful Humanitarian Projects and Vocational Training Teams Global grants are: 1. Sustainable – communities are able to address their basic education and literacy needs after the Rotary club/district has completed its work;

2. Measurable – sponsors can select standard measures for their area of focus from the Monitoring and Evaluation Toolkit or use their own measures to show the good results of their work;

3. Community driven – designed by the host community based upon the needs they have identified;

4. Aligned with an area of focus – as defined in the policy documents. Elements of Successful Scholarships Global grants support graduate-level scholarships for career-minded professionals. TRF considers the following when evaluating global grant scholarship applications: 1. The applicant’s previous work experience in the field of basic education and literacy;

2. Academic program alignment with basic education and literacy. Examples of academic programs include education, literacy, curriculum development, special education, and school administration;

3. The applicant’s future career plans as they relate to basic education and literacy.

When will the World become Polio Free? The official best guess prediction is that the human race will suffer it's last case of Poliomyelitis in 2018. No one knows the future, and I certainly don't. Polio has proven to be a tough disease to eliminate completely. Polio has come back unexpectedly in countries

Local students receive dictionaries and thesauruses through Rotary Club of Lake Elsinore program

Program encourages children to build upon their growing literacy skills

Lake Elsinore, CA- This month, thousands of third and fourth grade students in the Lake Elsinore Unified School District received dictionaries or thesauruses to assist in furthering their education. The Rotary Club of Lake Elsi-nore provided the dictionaries as part of their annual literacy program project. Each year, the dictionaries, which are given to third grade students, are donated as part of Rotary International’s Future Visions Grant. This year,

the Rotary Club of Lake Elsinore also purchased thesauruses for the fourth grade students.

Rotarians visited each classroom to share the books and were greeted with gratitude from students and teachers alike.

“We appreciate the Rotary Club of Lake Elsinore for donating the dictionary and thesaurus books to our 3rd & 4th grade students, “said Dominique Hoover, a teacher at Machado Elementary school in a thank you letter to the club. “ My kiddos were so excited to receive their very own thesaurus.”

Furthering education for youth is only one aspect of Rotary. Rotarians also spend much time giving back to the community, which was a theme presented during the recent book giveaway at the schools. During the Rotarian visits to the classrooms, students were invited to ask questions and, through discussions, were encouraged to use their dictionaries and thesauruses to look up the words that presented a challenge within the discus-sions.

“Utilizing the dictionaries and thesauruses, we are able to con-vey to the students the benefits of volunteering and help them understand what the Rotary motto “Service above Self” really means,” said Dee Thomas. “It is also heartwarming to see these children receive a book they can call their own.”

For more information about community involvement and other Rotary Club of Lake Elsinore pro-grams, visit www.lakeelsinorerotary.org.

The Rotary Club of Lake Elsinore meets on Wednesday mornings at 7:00 a.m. at the Ortega High School Conference Center at 520 Chaney St., Lake Elsinore. The Rotary Club of Lake Elsinore also has an evening and online extension of the club. For information about Rotary programs, you can log onto www.lakeelsinorerotary.org or you can call 951-699-5551.

Disaster Preparedness Note:

Extension Cord Safety

Extension cords are a convenient way to power electrical devices, especially during

the holiday season. However, without proper use, extension cords can become a fire

hazard.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, most home electrical fires involve home’s

electrical wiring or lighting. Follow these important USFA tips to keep your family

safe:

Replace worn, old or damaged extension cords right away

Use extension cords for temporary purposes only;

Avoid putting cords where they can be damaged or pinched,

Like under a carpet or rug;

Don’t overload power strips; and

Use power strips that have internal overload protection.
