Keynote: Technology for the HR LeaderTom WilliamsFacebook. Twitter. LinkedIn. Foursquare. Yammer. These and other social media technologies are transforming work as we know it. Senior Human Resources Manager, Thomas Williams, will lead a panel discussion on the role of social media and how Human Resources can play a strategic role in using this technology in recruiting, employee engagement, communications, and at the same time remain in compliance with various federal, state, and local laws that are mushrooming as a result of trying to catch up with this technology.Panelists: Chris Van Bavel, Louis Poretz, and Sheryl Jones Alu

FMLA: What, Who, When, How & Updates Dana BrunEvery day the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) costs employers hundreds if not thousands of dollars in increased labor cost, lost worker productivity, and continued health care benefits. With significant regulation detail and legal requirements, FMLA administration is time consuming and complicated. We will review the what, who, when and how of FMLA compliance. Not only will we review these important areas, we will also go through a detailed analysis of the new and upcoming regulations as it relates to FMLA.

Integration of Leaders Nancy V. DouglasResearch and statistics show effectively integrating leaders has an impact to the company. According to the Corporate Leadership Council, “Fifty percent of newly hired leaders quit or are fired within the first three years.” This session will provide participants with an outline for integrating a leader into their company’s culture and environment. Participants will explore the areas of planning, design, risks and the investment that is needed to successfully ensure the new leader is engaged and effectively contributing to the organization.

Recruiting for 2012 and BeyondRachel Teague BorowskyLearn how the evolution of recruiting has moved to strategies and tactics that include social media such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Internet, and Blogs. Think about your pipeline – how are you filling, maintaining and deleting your recruiting data? What tracking systems are available and do you/should you maintain a database of candidates? What are the best ways to tap your resources such as referrals, networking, and relationships?

The Hard Conversations: Initiating Discussions That Matter Joni DanielsPractical advice for anyone who struggles with initiating thorny conversations, this program has proven helpful in dealing with everyday life or workplace challenges and can be adapted to a variety of audiences. The toughest conversations are the ones we know we need to have, but don’t want to initiate. Rather than hoping the issues will just go away, you can take proactive steps to assume control and transform your desire to improve a situation into action. This presentation focuses on how to determine a realistic outcome, develop a sound strategy, head off potential problems and create a solid script to carry you through. In effectively managing conflict, it is often not what you say, but how you say it.

Trends in Compensation & Best Practices in the Current Economy Amber Duncan and Karen ClarkWithout effective systems in place and data available, employee compensation can run counter to efficiency and performance objectives set by an organization. Learn how market-based pay structures can help your organization remain competitive, administer compensation fairly and easily, and allocate limited financial resources where they are most needed.

Selling the Value of HR to Executive LeadershipRob BluntIn this interactive session, participants will explore the monetary impact HR adds to the bottom line. Participants will identify and review HR Services and assign value to the functions that HR practitioners perform for the organization. Participants will match the HR’s Strategies, Tactics and Functions to the organization’s Business Strategies. The result will be the building of an HR Value Roadmap which will outline why HR is valuable. The session will then discuss effective C-suite communication so that participants are better equipped to communicate the value HR brings to the table to their management.

Job Descriptions: How to Make Them Work for YOU!Laura Lockard FranciscoJob descriptions lay the groundwork for effective recruitment, compensation, performance management and retention programs. This session will help HR professionals understand not only why having current job descriptions is necessary, but also the elements of developing accurate, clear and comprehensive descriptions and tips for avoiding some of the typical pitfalls that prevent them from being used effectively.

Cultural Competence—Moving from “Them” to “Us”Keith MerkeyChanges in the workforce have brought new challenges and opportunities for businesses. In order to realize the greatest competitive advantage and retain the most qualified employees, organizations must make an effort to ensure that their employees represent a diverse population and that a culture of inclusion and respect is promoted and maintained. HR professionals must lead the way to ensure that their organizations promote a culture of diversity.

In this session, diversity issues will be explored including where do we come up with the information that we hold about people, places, and relationships? Through accepting the unquestioned information, assumptions and biases about groups of people, individuals can rob themselves of valuable opportunities for growth and development as well as understanding. HR professionals will learn information and have opportunities for self-understanding, as well as explore ways to be allies and supporters for those who need more diversity understanding. Additionally, HR Professionals will learn about what is needed to develop diversity programs and mange diversity issues for their employees.

Our mission is to provide networking, educational, advisory,

and training opportunities to

HR professionals in Southern Maryland.
