Similarities in Male and Female Anatomy
• 2 pouches
– Testicles
– Ovaries
• Start out inside body
– Testicles “descend” before birth
• Fetus begins with “starter parts” that could develop into either gender.
![Page 5: Human Reproduction - Weebly€¦ · Human Reproduction Male and Female Anatomy Junior Science. Lesson Objectives •Use illustrative diagrams to identify and locate the main parts](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062414/5f1d08df4d2db150777afceb/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Determining Gender
• DNA determines baby’s gender (XX = Female) (XY = Male)
• Around the 7th week Baby’s body is “told” by DNA to become either male or female.
• Depends on which egg & sperm get together.
• Father determines baby’s gender.
• “Unused” parts disintegrate
• “Used” parts continue development

Anatomy – SimilaritiesBut Function – VERY different!
• Male
– Uncomplicated
– Produce sperm
(2-4 MILLION every day)
• Female
– Very Complicated!
– One egg
– Once a month
– Careful coordination of hormones & body
– Timing perfect!

The smallest cell in the human body is the sperm cell; it is 85 000 times
smaller than the egg cell.
The Human Gametes
The largest cell in the human body is the ovum or egg cell at
one millimeter in diameter.

Female Reproductive System
• The female reproduction system produces the female gamete (egg).
• It protects the developing embryo / foetus
![Page 9: Human Reproduction - Weebly€¦ · Human Reproduction Male and Female Anatomy Junior Science. Lesson Objectives •Use illustrative diagrams to identify and locate the main parts](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062414/5f1d08df4d2db150777afceb/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
The Female Anatomy
• The Ovaries are involved in egg production – contain ova. Females are born with all her eggs (400,000). She will use approximately 500 over her lifetime.
• The Uterus supports embryo development
• The Cervix forms the entry into the Uterus
• The Vagina receives sperm during intercourse

Male Reproductive System
• Testis – Make Sperm (2-4 million per day)
• Scrotum – Holds the testis outside the body at a temperature of 34oC.
• Sperm Duct – carry sperm from the testis to the penis.
• Seminal Glands – add seminal fluid to help the movement of the sperm
• Penis – allows semen to pass from the male to the female

The Production of Sperm
• Sperm the male gametes are produced in the testes.
• Mature sperm are stored in the top of the testis (epididymis).
• Secretions are added to sperm in sperm duct.
• Semen is a mixture of sperm, hormones, sugars, water.
• This mixture allows sperm to survive for a few days inside the female’s body.

Anatomy of a Sperm
• Contains Several Parts:– Head
• Chemical to dissolve egg goo
• Dad’s genetic information (DNA)
– Mitochondria• Energy
– Tail• Swimming

Summary
• The role of the male reproductive system is to produce sperm and deliver it to the female.
• The female reproductive system produces eggs, holds the developing baby and gives birth to the baby
