Physiology ILaboratory
The Senses
This lab involves several exercises related to the senses: “Special Senses: Vision”, “Special Senses: Hearing and Equilibrium”, and “Special Senses: Olfaction and Taste”. .Complete the Review Sheets for the exercises and take the related quiz on the senses. There is also a video of the dissection of a sheep eye.Click on the sound icon for the audio file (mp3 format) for each slide. There is also a link to a dowloadable mp4 video which can be played on an iPod.

The Variety of Senses
Mechanoreceptors – proprioceptors, touch, pressure, hearing, balance, pressure, vibration, movement
Chemoreceptors – taste, smell, visceral senses (O2, CO2, pH, etc.)
Thermoreceptors – hot and cold
Nociceptors – pain
Photoreceptors – vision

Basal cells
Taste buds – groups of taste cells located on papillae of tongue as well as hard palate and epiglottis.
• circumvallate papillae – large, round, back of tongue.•filiform papillae – no taste buds, near tip, touch receptors.
•fungiform papillae – most abundant, over most of tongue.
