HUB VENUE APPLICATION PACK
17 JANUARY - 16 FEBRUARY 2020
WELCOME TO THE BIGGEST HUBS AT
FRINGE WORLD 2020!FRINGE WORLD acknowledges the Whadjuk people of the Noongar Nation as the traditional custodians of the land on which we Fringe and pay our respects to elders past, present and emerging.
Welcome to the 2020 FRINGE WORLD Hub Venue Application Pack. This Pack is here to provide you with the information you need to help you decide if a FRINGE WORLD Hub is for you.
FRINGE WORLD Festival is a month long celebration in Perth, Western Australia. Since inception in 2012, FRINGE WORLD is now recognised as the largest arts event in Western Australia and the third-largest Fringe in the world.
Unlike other Fringe festivals, FRINGE WORLD is unique as we run not only the festival platform (eg. delivering Festival marketing campaign and ticketing system) but we also produce the largest Hub venues in the Festival. The programs for these hubs are programmed, representing a spread of diverse genres and a mix of shows from a range of origins, including our WA artists.
Many of the venues are pop-up venues brought to Perth exclusively for FRINGE WORLD. FRINGE WORLD’s Hub venues consistently perform above the Festival averages, see page 11 for more details.
To find out more about the Festival, we recommend you read the FRINGE WORLD 2020 Artist Registration Pack for key considerations you need to know before registering your event. In 2020 we are including all FRINGE WORLD Hub events, both ticketed and non-ticketed in this application pack.
It’s up to you to consider what your goals are for participating in FRINGE WORLD and what type of venue you want to be in. Alternatives to a Hub venue include participating in an independent program or an independent venue. This pack only refers to FRINGE WORLD Hub Venues. The figures in this pack are to be used as a guide only, past performance is not indicative of future results.
FRINGE WORLD is a not-for-profit organisation, so any profit made from the festival is reinvested in improving the festival and outcomes for participating artists.

MEET THEFRINGE WORLD
HUBS
The venues that the Festival manages directly are known as FRINGE WORLD Hub Venues. In these, we provide fitted out venues and program shows to go in them based on an application process.
We also provide staff, technical and production support, promotion campaigns for Fringe hubs, in addition to a massive marketing campaign for the Festival as a whole.
4
We create a popular and enjoyable hub atmosphere around the venues, operate bars and food vendors: everything but the show (which is where you come in).
There are five main hubs that we manage; The Woodside Pleasure Garden, The Ice Cream Factory, FRINGE Central at The Perth Cultural Centre, Yagan Square and Girls School.

Perth’s favourite outdoor fringe playground is The Woodside Pleasure Garden in Northbridge, home to the widest range of entertainment in the Fringe.
Our school holiday program returns in 2020 with loads of ticketed and free entertainment happening throughout in addition to the usual evening roster of shows. Programming levels will remain consistent in 2020.
Located a short ten-minute walk from the Perth Bus or Train station and a short stroll from the other FRINGE WORLD hubs including The Ice Cream Factory, FRINGE Central and Yagan Square.

The home of A Midnight Visit in 2019 and Girls School Cinema over winter, Girls School launches as a full-fledged FRINGE WORLD Hub in 2020.
Home to our small to medium hard-wall spaces, Girls School will be our Hub for shows that require a quieter performance space. In 2020 we will be looking to program up to nine spaces at Girls School in venues ranging from ten to 450 person capacities, seven nights a week.
Girls School is located in East Perth, a five minute drive from the CBD and Yagan Square. It is serviced by a number of free buses including both the yellow and red CAT buses and standard bus services. Over 800 carparking spaces are available across the road. As this is a heritage building, parts of Girls School have limited accessibility.

Sitting in the Perth Cultural Centre is FRINGE WORLD’s birth place: Fringe Central.
The Fringe hub venues are pop-ups that are nestled around the existing cultural and performance spaces in the Centre; beside PICA, The Blue Room Theatre, Art Gallery of Western Australia, The State Theatre Centre, The State Library of WA and Museum of WA, in the centre of Northbridge’s entertainment precinct. In 2020 we are revitalising this Hub.
Fringe Central is at the opposite end of James Street and shares all the handy public transport options with Perth Station, the Busport and undercover parking in the Library and Art Gallery.

Straddling the Northbridge and CBD boundaries, our Yagan Square Hub returns in 2020.
We heard artists feedback on Yagan Square and in 2020 we will be looking to increase the density of shows in the space and improve public ammenities in the Yagan Square Hub.
Being the main ground level crossover from the CBD into Northbridge, Yagan Square has our highest levels of foot traffic. Yagan Square is home to Perth station and the Perth Busport and is surrounded by multi-storey carparks. In 2019, more tickets were sold at our Yagan Square box office than any other box office. There will be no Australia Day programming in Yagan Square.

FRINGE WORLD cover the cost of the venue, staffing, technical equipment, etc up front and then take 32% of each ticket sold to recoup costs. We recommend you pull together a well considered budget before you start your registration, and consider things like marketing and publicity as well as event registration fees and booking fees that apply to all Fringe events and what your target take home is at the end of the season. NON-TICKETED SHOWS AND BUSKINGFringe Hubs host a huge range of shows where tickets aren’t sold through our Box Offices. These include buskers, pop-up minishows, the FRINGE WORLD Mermaids and other experiences for visitors. In 2019 FRINGE WORLD hosted numerous non-ticket events including Clara Cupcakes’ I Made This For You, Absurdly Yours Doorway Cabaret, MONO MONO, Strange for Hire Sideshow, Jesus’ Miracle Lab, Koorddansende Koekebakkers and the everpopular FRINGE WORLD Mermaids and buskers programs.
Performers will receive all the inclusions of ticketed events, but have a slightly different deal reflecting the non-ticketed nature of the performances. As with ticketed events, artists in these shows will also be expected to present a high-quality show and will be responsible for their own marketing campaigns, licenses, etc.
14
WHAT IS OUR DEAL?Each performer collects their own remunerations by passing a hat after their performance, which goes directly to that performer or act. FRINGE WORLD does not charge a commission on any hatting funds.
Busking pitches come with a standard equipment allocation and a technician to operate as required:
1 x Headset or Microphone 1 x Wireless amplifier
Other events will have a bespoke arrangement that will take into account the event’s needs. Include what you would like in your application. Additional charges may apply.

SOME THINGS FOR ALL ARTISTS TO CONSIDERTIME In 2020 all events, both ticketed and non-ticketed will be programmed at consistent times. Each performance will have a set duration for set up, performance, changeover and hatting where applicable.
NOISE As with many pop-up hub sites, your performance may be in close proximity to other venues. As a Fringe Hub Event you will be expected to adhere to volume and noise conditions as set by site management.
RISK MANAGEMENTAll performances are required to complete a risk assessment. If your performance contains elements that are considered particularly risky to yourself or the audience, you should consider completing this risk assessment as early as possible. Please email the programming team at [email protected] for more information.
TECHNICAL REHEARSALS As standard for all ticketed shows you will have a technical rehearsal in your venue. Generally, technical rehearsals happen on the day of or the day before your first show. Sometimes it may be necessary to schedule your tech up to three days prior to your first show. Please include any other commitments into your application and we will do our best to accommodate them.
IMPORTANT TIP! Most FRINGE WORLD audiences
expect a ticketed show to run for 60 minutes or less without an interval.
