THE STORY IN 60 SECONDS

01

25 SEPTEMBER 2009

What is Hub Melbourne?Hub Melbourne is a community of people, places and ideas. It´s home will be a creative and social innovation centre located across from Southern Cross Station.

We believe that there is no absence of good ideas in the world. The problem is a crisis of access, scale, resources and impact. So it felt vital to create places around

the world for accessing space, resources, connections, knowledge, experience and investment. Hub Melbourne is part of the global Hub network which works

across five continents, and over 23 cities to create places for people who change things. The Hub attracts ´people making good´ from within and beyond the public,

private and third sectors. These are the brave professionals working at ´new frontiers´ to tackle both the worlds and the local communities most pressing social,

cultural and environmental challenges.

At a practical level, the Hub is a co-working and event space available to organisations and individuals of all types to subscribe to on a monthly membership basis.

The Hub offers its members time based access to infrastructure (such as desks, chairs, IT, meeting rooms, event spaces etc) in a shared and collaborative space.

However, the Hub is much more than just a shared office space. The Hub facilitates social innovation and enterprise through connecting organisations and

individuals to collaborate, generate and create. The Hub invites lawyers to share space with artists, economists with designers, youth workers with advertising

executives. By connecting passionate individuals ,The Hub allows the sharing of visions, expertise, skills and resources. Through this process creative social

ventures or enterprises are borne - ventures that are capable of making our world a more connected, more creative, and better place.

ÍNVITATION

25 SEPTEMBER 2009

An invitation…This is an invitation to be part of a unique global ecosystem of people, places and ideas dedicated to creating a better world.

The Hub is about the power of people with ideas. It‟s about the audacity, optimism and drive of the people who believe they can change things. Change

minds, change lives, and ultimately change the world a little. This is the thing. Another world is not just possible, it‟s happening. People from every

profession, background and culture are being united by one thing - the imagination and drive to pursue enterprising ideas for a radically better world.

These are the people who see and do things differently. The entrepreneurs, the executives, the policy-makers, the freelance professionals, the

community leaders. The Hub is becoming the place they call home.

Hubs can be found in cities all over the world. They are places to work, meet, innovate, learn and relax. They are designed for people who crave the

inspiration, resources, knowledge, connections and investment to start and grow new ideas.

In the same way that an ecosystem is about the interaction of living things with their environment, the Hub is about the power of inspiring places where

new connections, relationships and initiatives can evolve, adapt and thrive.

MISSION

25 SEPTEMBER 2009

Local impact, global reachHub Melbourne is part of a unique local and global ecosystem of people, places and ideas.

Things began in a derelict warehouse in London five years ago, and now the network expands to places as diverse as San Francisco, Bombay, Sao

Paulo and Amsterdam. A further 15 Hubs will open in 2010, with the ambition to exceed 60 by 2013. 2010 plans include the opening of the first „rural‟ Hub

in Oaxaca in Mexico, the first Peace Hub in Kabul, and the first „emerging market‟ Hub in Minneapolis along with clusters of pop-up Hubs in Sao Paulo

and London.

Our mission is to create a global network of values-driven entrepreneurs working together to create a radically better world. Our ambition is to be an

organization of global significance in the 21st century - an infrastructure and diverse community of enterprising, free-thinkers and doers with the focus and

agility to solve some of the most pressing problems facing the world today.

For Victorians and Australians, Hub Melbourne offers this unique opportunity.

BUSINESS MODEL & GOVERNANCE

05

25 SEPTEMBER 2009

A self sustaining social enterpriseBusiness model

Hub is a social mission focused organization that earns revenue from membership fees and partnership fees in order to sustain its operations. It is founded as a for-profit social

enterprise where profits are used to enable the community projects of its members as well as provide a return to social investors. Whilst grants are sought at start-up or to

enable a particular initiative, Hub is not dependant on grants in order to remain viable. Hub Melbourne is 100% Melbourne owned and operated and pays a small license fee to

Hub World in order to access the global Hub network of over 5000 members spread over 6 continents.

Hub´s social impact and collaborative potential is dependent on a diverse range of different people and initiatives being part of the Hub community. It is committed to providing

affordable access to the facilities, technology and networks that projects need to get off the ground and flourish. Hub adopts a tiered and flexible pricing structure that provides

discounted rates for start-ups and fellowships for non-funded initiatives. Hub is able to do this, and remain viable, because of its incredibly efficient use of space and ability to

turnover the number of people using the Hub several times in a day.

Governance

Hub Melbourne practices transparency and accountability and embodies quality legal, financial and governance practices. Hub Melbourne has an advisory council and is

committed to forming a legally constituted board prior to opening in February 2011. The space will be created in the Pop-Up Hub for members to form a Members Committee to

ensure that the social mission is adhered to and members needs are constantly met. Governance will consequently include a legally constituted board, an advisory council, a

members committee and a reporting regimen that will report quarterly on its financial, environmental and social impact performance.

STATUS

25 SEPTEMBER 2009

Realising Hub Melbourne Hub Melbourne will open in February 2011. To enable us to truly co-create the amazing space and community that Hub Melbourne seeks to be, we will

commence the lease at Donkey Wheel House before we officially open. From October 15 th , we will create the Hub Melbourne Incubator that will be

equipped with the furniture, technology and amenities that you need to operate your businesses, projects and events. The Hub Melbourne Incubator will

be a unique and exciting opportunity to co-create the Hub Melbourne community. Much more than a workspace, the Incubator will include learning

experiences, events and the opportunity to collaborate with a group of passionate, diverse, creative, and values driven individuals.

There is a 10 strong core team being supported by dozens of other collaborators working towards the opening. Hub Melbourne is now in the process of

attracting and engaging with amazing people and organizations that will become founding investors, directors, advisors, members and partners. A

significant milestone was recently achieved when Hub Melbourne was selected as one of just ten social enterprises in Victoria to participate in the Social

Traders CRUNCH program which provides mentoring, business development support and financial investment to enable and support social enterprises..

Hub Melbourne is supporting teams in Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Auckland to realise Hubs. Following proof that Hub Melbourne is generating financial,

social and environmental value, we are committed to innovating and adapting our business model to establish and support Regional, Rural and Island

Hubs that will truly connect social innovation in the Oceania region. Our ambition is to grow both the number of physical Hubs, and the range of services

we can offer to the communities we serve - for example, into the realm of professional services and venture capital for values driven entrepreneurs.
