PurposeThe model of the Huawei RNC is BSC6810. This document describes how to maintain thehardware of the RNC after the RNC commissioning. The maintenance items are routine sitemaintenance, RNC power-on and power-off, and parts replacement.

5 Powering On/Off the RNC Cabinet

This part describes how to power on and power off the RNC cabinet in a normal situation andto power off the RNC cabinet in an emergency. It also describes the power distributionspecifications for the RNC cabinet.

6 Cleaning a Fan Box

To ensure the long-term operation, the maintenance personnel must clean the fan box regularly,preferably once a year.

7 Cleaning an RNC Air Filter

The air filters protect the boards and the RNC from dust. Clean the air filter at least once everysix months.

8 Replacing RNC Boards

This part describes how to replace the boards in the RNC cabinet.

9 Replacing RNC Cables

This part describes how to replace the Ethernet cable, trunk cable, optical cable, alarm box signalcable, clock signal cable, and the signal monitoring cable of the power distribution box in theRNC.

1 Safety Information

1.1 Safety PrecautionsThis section describes certain safety precautions and helps to choose the measurement deviceand testing device. Read and follow these safety precautions before installing, operating, andmaintaining Huawei devices.

Following All Safety Precautions

Before any operation, read the instructions and precautions in this document carefully tominimize the possibility of accidents.

The Danger, Caution, and Note items in the package of documents do not cover all the safetyprecautions that must be followed. They only provide the generic safety precautions foroperations.

DANGERThis symbol indicates that casualty or serious accident may occur if you ignore the safetyinstruction.

CAUTIONThis symbol indicates that serious or major injury may occur if you ignore the safety instruction.

Complying with the Local Safety Regulations

When operating the device, comply with the local safety regulations. The safety precautionsprovided in the documents are supplementary. You must comply with the local safetyregulations.

General Installation Requirements

The personnel in charge of installation and maintenance must be trained and master the correctoperating methods and safety precautions before beginning work.

The rules for installing and maintaining the device are as follows:

l Only the trained and qualified personnel can install, operate and maintain the device.

l Only the qualified specialists are allowed to remove the safety facilities, and repair thedevice.

l Any replacement of the device or part of the device (including the software) or any changemade to the device must be performed by qualified or authorized personnel of Huawei.

l Any fault or error that might cause safety problems must be reported immediately to thepersonnel in charge.

Grounding Requirements

The following requirements are applicable to the device to be grounded:

l Ground the device before installation and remove the ground cable after uninstallation.

l Do not operate the device in the absence of a ground conductor. Do not damage the groundconductor.

l The unit (or system) must be permanently connected to the protection ground beforeoperation. Check the electrical connection of the device before operation and ensure thatthe device is reliably grounded.

Safety of Personnel

Ensure the following:

l When lightning strikes, do not operate the device and cables.

l When lightning strikes, unplug the AC power connector. Do not use the fixed terminal ortouch the terminal or antenna connector.

NOTE

The previous two requirements are suitable for the wireless fixed terminal.

l To prevent electric shock, do not connect safety extra-low voltage (SELV) circuits totelecommunication network voltage (TNV) circuits.

l To prevent laser radiation from injuring your eyes, never look into the optical fiber outletwith unaided eyes.

l To prevent electric shock and burns, wear the electrostatic discharge (ESD) clothing, glovesand wrist strap, and remove conductors such as jewelry and watch before operation.

Device Safetyl Before operation, the device must be secured on the floor or other fixed objects, such as

the walls and the mounting racks.l Do not block ventilation openings while the system is running.

l When installing the panel, tighten the screw with the tool.

1.2 Electricity Safety

High Voltage

DANGERl The high voltage power supply provides power for running the system. Direct contact with

the high voltage power supply or contact through damp objects may result in fatal danger.l Non-standard and improper high voltage operations may result in fire and electric shock.

l The personnel who install the AC facility must be qualified to perform operations on highvoltage and AC power supply facilities.

l When installing the AC power supply facility, follow the local safety regulations.

l When operating the AC power supply facility, follow the local safety regulations.

l When operating the high voltage and AC power supply facilities, use the specific toolsinstead of common tools.

l When the operation is performed in a damp environment, ensure that water is kept off thedevice. If the cabinet is damp or wet, shut down the power supply immediately.

ThunderstormThe following requirements are suitable only for the wireless base station or the device with anantenna or GPS antenna.

DANGERIn a thunderstorm, do not perform operations on high voltage and AC power supply facilities oron a steel tower and mast.

High Electrical Leakage

CAUTIONGround the device before powering on the device. Otherwise, the personnel and device are indanger.

If the "high electrical leakage" flag is stuck to the power terminal of the device, you must groundthe device before powering it on.

Power Cable

CAUTIONDo not install and remove the power cable with a live line. Transient contact between the coreof the power cable and the conductor may generate electric arc or spark, which may cause fireor eye injury.

l Before installing or removing the power cable, turn off the power switch.

l Before connecting the power cable, ensure that the power cable and label comply with therequirements of the actual installation.

Fuse

CAUTIONTo ensure that the system runs safely, when a fuse blows, replace it with a fuse of the same typeand specifications.

Electrostatic Discharge

CAUTIONThe static electricity generated by the human body may damage the electrostatic sensitivecomponents on the circuit board, such as the large-scale integrated circuit (LIC).

In the following situations, the human body generates a static electromagnetic field:

l Movement of body parts

l Clothes friction

l Friction between shoes and the ground

l Holding plastic in hand

The static electromagnetic field will remain within the human body for a long time.

Before contacting the device, plug boards, circuit boards, and application specific integratedcircuits (ASICs), wear a grounded ESD wrist strap. It can prevent the sensitive components frombeing damaged by the static electricity in the human body.

1.3 Inflammable Environment

DANGERDo not place the device in the environment that has inflammable and explosive air or fog. Donot perform any operation in this environment.

Any operation of the electrical device in the inflammable environment causes danger.

1.4 Battery

Storage Battery

DANGERBefore handling the storage battery, read the safety precautions for the handling and connectionof the storage battery.

Incorrect operation of storage batteries may cause danger. During operation, ensure thefollowing:

l Prevent any short-circuit.

l Prevent the electrolyte from overflowing and leakage.

Electrolyte overflow may damage the device. It will corrode the metal parts and the circuitboards, and ultimately damage the device and cause short-circuit of the circuit boards.

General Operations

Before installing and maintaining the storage battery, ensure the following:

l Use special insulation tools.

l Use eye protection devices and operate with care.

l Wear rubber gloves and an apron in case of an electrolyte overflow.

l Always keep the battery upright when moving. Do not place the battery upside down or tiltit.

Short-Circuit

DANGERShort-circuit of the battery may cause injury. Although the voltage of a battery is low, hightransient current generated by short-circuit will release a surge of power.

Keep metal objects away from the battery to prevent short circuit. If they have to be used,disconnect the battery in use before performing any other operation.

Harmful Gas

CAUTIONl Do not use unsealed lead-acid storage batteries, because the gas emitted from it may result

in fire or device corrosion.

l Lay the storage battery horizontally and fix it properly.

The lead-acid storage battery in use will emit flammable gas. Therefore, store it in a place withgood ventilation and take precautions against fire.

High Temperature

CAUTIONHigh temperature may result in distortion, damage, and electrolyte overflow of the battery.

When the temperature of the battery exceeds 60oC, check whether there is acid overflow. If acidoverflow occurs, handle the acid immediately.

Acid

CAUTIONIf the acid overflows, it should be absorbed and neutralized immediately.

When handling a leaky battery, protect against the possible damage caused by the acid. Use thefollowing materials to absorb and neutralize acid spills:

l Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda): NaHCO3

l Sodium carbonate (soda): Na2CO3

Antacids must be used according to the instructions provided by the battery manufacturer.

Lithium Battery

CAUTIONThere is danger of explosion if the battery is incorrectly replaced.

l Replace the lithium battery with the same or equivalent type recommended by themanufacturer.

l Dispose of the used battery according to the instructions provided by the manufacturer.

l Do not dispose of the lithium battery in fire.

1.5 Radiation

Electromagnetic Field Exposure

CAUTIONHigh power radio-frequency signals are harmful to human body.

Before installing or maintaining an antenna on a steel tower or mast with a large number oftransmitter antennas, the operator should coordinate with all parties to ensure that the transmitterantennas are shut down.

The base transceiver station (BTS) has RF radiation (radiation hazard). Suggestions for theinstallation and operation of BTSs are given in the following section. Operators are also requiredto comply with the related local regulations on erecting BTSs.

l The antenna should be located in an area that is inaccessible to the public where the RFradiation exceeds the stipulated value.

l If the areas where RF radiation exceeds the stipulated value are accessible to workers,ensure that workers know where these areas are. They can shut down the transmitters beforeentering these areas. Such areas may not exist; but if they exist, the areas must be within arange of less than 10 m around the antennas.

l Each forbidden zone should be indicated by a physical barrier and striking sign to warn thepublic or workers.

Laser

CAUTIONWhen handling optical fibers, do not stand close to, or look into the optical fiber outlet withunaided eyes.

Laser transceivers or transmitters are used in the optical transmission system and associated testtools. Because the laser that is transmitted through the optical fiber produces a small beam oflight, it has a very high power density and is invisible to human eyes. If a beam of light entersthe eye, the retina may be damaged.

Normally, staring into the end of an unterminated optical fiber or broken optical fiber with theunaided eyes from a distance of more than 150 mm [5.91 in.] will not cause eye injury. Eyesmay, however, be damaged if an optical tool such as a microscope, magnifying glass or eyeloupe is used to stare into the bare optical fiber end.

Read the following guidelines to prevent laser radiation:

l Only the trained and authorized personnel can perform the operation.

l Wear a pair of eye-protective glasses when you are handling lasers or optical fibers.

l Ensure that the optical source is switched off before disconnecting optical fiber connectors.

l Never look into the end of an exposed optical fiber or an open connector if you cannotensure that the optical source is switched off.

l To ensure that the optical source is switched off, use an optical power meter.

l Before opening the front door of an optical transmission system, ensure that you are notexposed to laser radiation.

l Never use an optical tool such as a microscope, a magnifying glass, or an eye loupe to lookinto the optical fiber connector or end.

Read the following instructions before handling optical fibers:

l Only the trained personnel can cut and splice optical fibers.

l Before cutting or splicing an optical fiber, ensure that the optical fiber is disconnected fromthe optical source. After disconnecting the optical fiber, use protecting caps to protect allthe optical connectors.

1.6 Working at Heights

CAUTIONWhen working at heights, ensure that the objects do not fall.

When working at heights, ensure that the following requirements must be met:

l The personnel who work at heights must be trained.

l The operating machines and tools should be carried and handled safely to prevent themfrom falling.

l Safety measures, such as wearing a helmet and a safety belt, should be taken.

l In cold regions, warm clothes should be worn before working at heights.

l Ensure that the lifting appliances are well prepared for working at heights.

Lifting Weights

CAUTIONDo not access the areas under the arm of the crane and the goods in suspension when liftingweights.

l Ensure that the operators have been trained and qualified.

l Check the weight lifting tools and ensure that they are intact.

l Lift the weight only when the weight lifting tools are firmly mounted onto the weight-bearing object or the wall.

l Use a concise instruction to prevent incorrect operation.

l The angle between the two cables should be less than or equal to 90o in the lifting of weights(See Figure 1-2).

Safety Guide on Ladder UseChecking the Ladder

l Check the ladder before using it. Check the maximum weight that the ladder can support.

l Never overload the ladder.

Placing the Ladder

l The slant angle is preferred to be 75o. The slant can be measured with the angle square orwith arms, as shown in Figure 1-3. When using a ladder, place the wider end of the ladderon the ground and take protective measures on the base of the ladder against slippage. Placethe ladder on a stable ground.

When climbing the ladder, ensure the following:

l The gravity of the body does not shift from the edge of the ladder.

l Keep balance on the ladder before performing any operation.

l Do not climb higher than the fourth highest step of the ladder.

If you tend to climb to the roof, the length of the ladder should be at least one meter higher thanthe eave, as shown in Figure 1-4.

1.7 Mechanical Safety

Drilling

CAUTIONDo not drill on the cabinet without permission. Inappropriate drilling on the cabinet may damagethe electromagnetic shielding and internal cables. Metal shavings from the drilling may resultin a short-circuit of the circuit board if they get into the cabinet.

l Before drilling a hole on the cabinet, remove the cables from the cabinet.

l During the drilling, wear blinkers to protect your eyes.

Handling Fansl When replacing a component, place the component, screw, and tool at a safe place to prevent

them from falling into the running fan.l When replacing the ambient equipment around the fan, do not place the finger or board

into the running fan until the fan is switched off and stops running.

Moving Heavy ObjectsWear the protective gloves when moving heavy objects.

CAUTIONl Be careful when moving heavy objects.

l When moving the chassis outwards, be aware about the unfixed or heavy objects on thechassis to prevent injury.

l Two persons should be available to move a chassis; one person must not move a heavychassis. When moving a chassis, keep your back straight and move stably to prevent asprain.

l When moving or lifting a chassis, hold the handle or bottom of the chassis. Do not hold thehandle of the installed modules in the chassis, such as the power module, fan module, orboard.

1.8 Others

Inserting and Removing a Board

CAUTIONWhen inserting a board, wear the ESD wrist strap or gloves. Insert the board gently to preventany bent pins on the backplane.

CAUTIONBundle the signal cables separately from the strong current cables or high voltage cables.

Cabling RequirementsAt a very low temperature, movement of the cable may damage the plastic skin of the cable. Toensure the construction safety, comply with the following requirements:

l When installing cables, ensure that the environment temperature is above 0oC.

l If cables are stored in the place below 0oC, move the cables into a place at a roomtemperature and store the cables for more than 24 hours before installation.

l Move the cables with care, especially at a low temperature. Do not drop the cables directlyfrom the vehicle.

4 Putting On an ESD Wrist Strap

This part describes how to put on an ESD wrist strap. The ESD wrist strap, if grounded, canprotect the equipment from electrostatic discharge.

Contextl Put on the ESD wrist strap and ensure that it is in proper contact with your skin. Insert the

strap plug into the ESD connector, as shown in Figure 4-1.l Ensure that the ESD wrist strap is functional and that its impedance stays in the range 0.8

to 1.2 megaohms. Typically, the service life of an ESD wrist strap is two years. When theimpedance of the ESD wrist strap does not meet the requirements, replace it with a newone.

l The ESD wrist strap cannot prevent electrostatic discharge that is generated by the contactbetween your clothes and boards. Prevent your clothes from contact with boards.

ProcedureStep 1 Correctly put on the ESD wrist strap.

Step 2 Insert the strap plug into the ESD connector on the cabinet, as shown in Figure 4-1.

5 Powering On/Off the RNC Cabinet

About This Chapter

This part describes how to power on and power off the RNC cabinet in a normal situation andto power off the RNC cabinet in an emergency. It also describes the power distributionspecifications for the RNC cabinet.

5.1 RNC Power Distribution SpecificationsThe RNC works with DC power. This part describes the specifications for the input power ofthe RNC cabinet and the output power of the power distribution box.

5.2 Layout of Power Switches on the RNC CabinetThe two power distribution boxes installed on top of the RNC cabinet provide 12 output powersupplies for the RNC components. The serving relationship between the power supplies and thecomponents is fixed.

5.3 Powering On the RNC CabinetThis part describes how to power on the RNC cabinet and handle the power supply failures ofthe components in the cabinet.

5.4 Powering Off the RNC Cabinet in a Normal SituationThe RNC must be powered off when you move the equipment or anticipate a territorial blackout.If the RNC is powered off, all its services may be interrupted. Therefore, be cautious when youpower off the RNC.

5.5 Powering Off the RNC Cabinet in an EmergencyThe RNC must be powered off in an emergency, such as fire, smoke, or water immersion.

5.2 Layout of Power Switches on the RNC CabinetThe two power distribution boxes installed on top of the RNC cabinet provide 12 output powersupplies for the RNC components. The serving relationship between the power supplies and thecomponents is fixed.

One power distribution box has six power switches to control the six power supplies it outputs.The six power switches are SW1, SW2, SW3, SW4, SW5, and SW6. The label on the front panelof the power distribution box tells the serving relationship between the switches and the RNCcomponents, as shown in Figure 5-1 and Figure 5-2. For detailed information, refer to Table5-2.

5.3 Powering On the RNC CabinetThis part describes how to power on the RNC cabinet and handle the power supply failures ofthe components in the cabinet.

Prerequisitel The input power cables are correctly and securely connected. The jackets of the power

cables are intact.l The specifications for the input power of the RNC cabinet and the output power of the

power distribution box comply with the specifications, as described in 5.1 RNC PowerDistribution Specifications.

l All the switches numbered from SW1 to SW6 on the power distribution box are set toOFF.

Procedure

Step 1 Set the switches that control the RNC power supply on the Power Distribution Frame (PDF) toON.

Step 2 When the RUN LED on the front panel of the power distribution box blinks every 0.25 seconds(0.25 s ON and 0.25 s OFF), set the switches on the configured RSS and RBS subracks to ON.For the function of each switch, refer to the label on the front panel of the power distributionbox, as shown in 5.2 Layout of Power Switches on the RNC Cabinet.

NOTE

The unused switches on the two power distribution boxes are always set to OFF.

Step 3 Check the power supply of the components in the cabinet, as listed in Table 5-3.

empty slot that can house the same type of board. Then check theLED as follows:l If the board works properly, you can infer that the slot is faulty.

Replace the subrack.l If the board does not work properly, replace the board.

Power supply failuresin the fan box

Use the multimeter to measure the input voltage of the faulty fan box.l If the input voltage stays between –40 V and –57 V, replace the

fan box.l If the input power is abnormal, check the connections of power

cables. If the connections are loose, set all the switches on thepower distribution box to OFF and then reconnect the powercables. If the connections are proper, replace the power distributionbox because the switches on it may be faulty.

5.4 Powering Off the RNC Cabinet in a Normal SituationThe RNC must be powered off when you move the equipment or anticipate a territorial blackout.If the RNC is powered off, all its services may be interrupted. Therefore, be cautious when youpower off the RNC.

PrerequisiteThe data of the RNC is Backing Up RNC Data.

ContextTo lower the negative effect on the RNC, power off the RBR at first, and then power off theRSR.

Procedure

Step 1 According to the subrack configuration of the RBR, set switches SW1 to SW6 on the powerdistribution box to OFF in sequence.

Step 2 Turn outwards the ejector levers on the OMUa, as shown in part (1) of Removing the OMUaboard.Repeat this step if there are two OMUa boards.

Step 3 After the OFFLINE LED on the OMUa is ON steadily, set switches SW1 to SW6 on the powerdistribution box to OFF according to the subrack configuration of the RSR.

Step 4 Turn inwards the ejector levers on the OMUa until they are in position, as shown in part (2) ofInstalling the OMUa board.

Step 5 Set the switches that control the RNC power supply on the PDF to OFF.

6 Cleaning a Fan Box

To ensure the long-term operation, the maintenance personnel must clean the fan box regularly,preferably once a year.

Prerequisitel The tools for cleaning the fan box are ready. The tools are ESD wrist strap, cotton cloth,

ESD soft brush, vacuum cleaner, and cross screwdriver.

l The spare fan boxes are ready.

Context

CAUTIONThe replacement of the fan box severely affects the heat dissipation of the RNC, you shouldreplace the fan box as quickly as possible. The recommended time is shorter than one minute.If the replacement takes a longer time, the boards may be damaged due to a high temperature.

CAUTIONPut on an ESD wrist strap and ensure that it is properly connected to the ESD connector on thecabinet.

Procedure

Step 1 Clean the new fan box by using the clean cotton cloth, ESD soft brush, and vacuum cleaner.

Step 2 Open the front door of the cabinet. Use a cross screwdriver to loosen the two captive screws onthe fan box.

Step 3 Take the fan box out of the cabinet.

The air filters protect the boards and the RNC from dust. Clean the air filter at least once everysix months.

7.1 Air Filters in the RNC CabinetThe air filters are installed on the front door, at the inner side of back doors, and at the bottomof the cabinet. The locations of the air filters are different in the N68-22 and N68-21-N cabinets.

7.2 Cleaning the Air Filter at the RNC Cabinet Bottom (N68-22)This part describes how to clean the air filter at the bottom of the RNC N68-22 cabinet. Themaintenance personnel should clean the air filter at the bottom of the cabinet regularly or at leastonce every quarter.

Step 2 Hold the panel of the air filter with both hands and lift the air filter slightly to make the panelhigher than the screws that fix the grounding cables at the bottom of the cabinet. Then pull theair filter out of the cabinet at a slow pace.

Step 3 Clean the air filter with water and wipe the air filter with dry cloth. Then dry the air filter in aventilated place.

8.1 Safety Precautions of Board OperationThis part describes the precautions you must abide by when you install, remove, or replace theRNC boards, or perform any other operation that requires body contact with the boards.

Safety Precautions Before the Board Operationl Keep such packing materials as ESD boxes and bags in the equipment room for later use.

l Keep the boards and other electrostatic sensitive parts in ESD bags. Do not use non-antistatic materials such as white foams, common plastic bags, or paper bags to pack boards.Prevent these materials from contacting boards.

l Before inserting the boards into the subrack, ensure that the cabinet is properly grounded.Otherwise, the boards may be damaged.

Safety Precautions During the Board Operationl Place the board on an ESD pad when replacing board hardware or chips. Wear ESD wrist

strap and use a pair of ESD tweezers or an extraction tool to take or replace board chips.Do not touch board chips or pins with your bare hands.

l Wear an ESD wrist strap when you need to touch the ports on the boards. Discharge thestatic electricity of the cables and protective sleeves before connecting them to the ports.

l When installing the boards, do not touch the PCB or other components except the jumperand the DIP switches on the board.

l Place the removed boards or other components on an ESD pad or other ESD materials. Donot use non-antistatic materials such as white foams, common plastic bags, or paper bagsto pack boards. Prevent these materials from contacting boards.

8.2 Procedures for Replacing an RNC BoardThis part describes the general procedure to replace a board in the RNC.

8.2.1 Removing the RNC BoardThis part describes how to remove the boards from the subracks. All the boards in the RNCcabinets are hot swappable.

8.2.2 Inserting the RNC BoardThis part describes how to insert the RNC boards.

Prerequisitel The tools required for inserting RNC boards are all ready. The tools are the ESD wrist strap,

cross screwdriver, and ESD box or bag.l The board to be installed is ready and the DIP switches are correctly set.

Context

CAUTIONl Correctly put on the ESD wrist strap and ensure that the ESD wrist strap is properly connected

to the ESD connector on the cabinet.l When inserting the boards, do not touch the PCB or other components except the jumper and

the DIP switches on the board.

For which slot a board can be inserted into, refer to Boards in the RSS Subrack and Boardsin the RBS Subrack.

For other rules you must obey when inserting the RNC boards, refer to 8.1 Safety Precautionsof Board Operation .

Procedure

Step 1 Take the board out of the ESD box and check the pins and ports on the board.If there is any pin distorted, broken, or missing, or any port distorted, contact Huawei engineers.

Step 2 As shown in parts e and f in Figure 8-2, push the fixers on the panel while pulling the ejectorlevers to detach them from the fixers. Hold the two ejector levers and turn them outward to thefull extent. After the turning, the ejector levers shall be in the position as shown in part b inFigure 8-2.

Step 3 With one hand holding the panel of the board and the other hand holding the board bottom, insertthe board into the subrack along the guide rails. Push the borad till the ejector levers hook on tothe guide rails. The ejector levers are half open.

CAUTIONPush the boards slowly and steadily to avoid damaging the backplane pins and the boardconnector.

Step 4 As shown in part c in Figure 8-2, turn inward the two ejector levers together by 60°till the ejectorlevers hook on to the fixers on the panel. After the turning, the board is tightly installed on thebackplane the ejector levers hook on to the subrack, as shown in part d in Figure 8-2.

Step 5 Push the captive screws and tighten the screws clockwise to secure the board, as shown in partsg and h in Figure 8-2.

8.2.3 Checking and Setting DIP Switches on RNC SubracksThe DIP switches on subracks are used to set the subrack numbers. You need to check and setthe DIP switches before installing the RNC subracks.

Context

CAUTIONCorrectly put on the ESD wrist strap and ensure that the ESD wrist strap is properly connectedto the ESD connector on the cabinet.

The DIP switch on the RNC subrack consists of eight bits. If a bit is set to ON, it indicates 0. Ifa bit is set to OFF, it indicates 1. Table 8-1 describes the setting of the DIP switches on the RNCsubracks. Subrack 0 is the RSS subrack. Subracks 1–5 are RBS subracks.

NOTEWhen the RUN LED blinks every 0.25 second (0.25 s ON and 0.25 s OFF) or when the ALM LED is ON,pull out the MDMC and install it again to ensure that the MDMC is in full contact with the backplane.

Step 9 View the RUN LED on the board to verify that the board works properly. The RUN LED shouldblink every 1 second (1 s ON and 1 s OFF).

Step 10 On the LMT, check whether there are any alarms that are caused by board failures.If the alarms are reported, locate and handle the faults according to the alarm help information.

l When the RNC and its peer equipment are connected only through the FG2a, servicesbetween the RNC and its peer equipment are interrupted when you replace the FG2a.

Only the board that is housed in a slot with an even number and the board that is housed in a slot with theeven number plus 1 can form a redundancy relationship. For example, if the board that is housed in slot 14does not work in backup mode, the board that is housed in slot 15 either.

Step 2 Run the DSP BRD command on the LMT to query the board status.

If... Then...

CPU status is Normal. 1. Run the SWP BRD command to switch the board from active tostandby.

Step 8 Remove the caps from the optical ports and connectors and keep them for later use. Then installthe optical cable by referring to the labels.

Step 9 If the RUN LED blinks every 1 s (1 s ON and 1 s OFF), run the DSP BRD command to querythe status of the new board.

cross screwdriver, and ESD box or bag.

l The LMT is started and the LMT properly communicates with the BAM. If the OMUa isfaulty and fails to communicates with the LMT, the version of the LMT application mustbe consistent with the software version of the standby OMUa.

– The virtual internal and external IP address of OMUa board

Context

CAUTIONPut on an ESD wrist strap and ensure that it is properly connected to the ESD connector on thecabinet.

CAUTIONl When only one OMUa board is configured, the replacement interrupts the communication

between BAM and FAM. The active data of the RNC is lost.l When two OMUa boards that work in active/standby mode are configured, the replacement

of the standby OMUa does not affect the RNC.

Procedure

Step 1 If two OMUa boards are configured, ensure that the OMUa to be replaced is not active.

If... Then...

The OMUa to be replaced is faulty. Replace the faulty OMUa only after the board isautomatically switched to standby mode or stopsrunning.

The OMUa is replaced for other reasons. Run the DSP BRD command to query the statusof the new board.l If the OMUa to be replaced is active, run the

SWP BAM command on the LMT for aforcible switchover. Then run the DSP BAMcommand five minutes later to ensure that theboard is in standby state.

l If the OMUa to be replaced is standby, replacethe OMUa with a new one.

CAUTIONIf part of the processes on the active OMUa malfunction after an emergency switchover, youmay infer that the data between both OMUa boards is not synchronized before the switchover.Use either of the following methods for troubleshooting:

l If the previously active OMUa can work properly, stop the active OMUa and switch overthe other OMUa from standby to active. Then start the new standby OMUa. Run the SWPBAM command on the LMT to perform a forcible switchover after the data between theactive OMUa and the standby OMUa is synchronized.

l Restore the data manually on the malfunctional active OMUa. For details, refer to RestoringRNC System Data.

Step 2 Turn outwards the ejector levers of the OMUa, as shown in part (1) of Figure 8-6.

NOTE

After you turn the ejector levers, the board automatically shuts down the operating system and hard disks.The OFFLINE LED on the board is ON steadily, which indicates that the board is powered off. These tasksare automatically completed by the OMUa board.

Step 3 Remove the Ethernet cable, mouse cable, keyboard cable, and monitor cable (if configured) fromthe OMUa.

Step 4 Loosen the screws on the OMUa, as shown in part (2) of Figure 8-6.

Step 5 Pull out the board along the guide rails, as shown in part (3) of Figure 8-6.

Step 6 Push the new board into the subrack along the guide rails, as shown in part (4) of Figure 8-7.

CAUTIONl The replacement of the standby PEUa has no negative effect on the RNC. When you replace

an independent PEUa, the services carried on the board are interrupted.

l When the RNC and its peer equipment are connected by using only the PEUa, all the servicesbetween them are interrupted during the replacement.

Procedure

Step 1 Run the LST SUBRACK command on the LMT to query the board status.

If... Then...

Backup type is Board and port backup binding. Go to Step 2.

Backup type is No Backup. Go to Step 3.

NOTE

If one type of RNC boards work in active/standby mode, they must be installed in two neighboring slots:one is an even numbered slot and the other is an odd numbered slot (even nubmer plus 1). For example, ifthe boards in slots 14 and 15 do not work in active/standby mode, they work independently.

Step 2 Run the DSP BRD command on the LMT to query the board status.

If... Then...

CPU status is Normal . 1. Run the SWP BRD command to switch the board from activeto standby.

2. Go to Step 3.NOTE

The forcible switchover of the boards may affect the operation of the RNC.Therefore, use this command only when the traffic is low, for example, atmidnight.

Others Go to Step 3.

Step 3 Check whether the labels on the trunk cable and clock cable (if configured) to the PEUa arelegible. If the labels are illegible, relabel the cables to avoid faulty connections after the boardis replaced.

Step 4 Disconnect the clock cable. Use the straight screwdriver to loosen the captive screws on thetrunk cable connector. Then disconnect the trunk cable.

Step 5 Remove the board, as described in 8.2.1 Removing the RNC Board.

Step 6 Check whether the settings of the DIP switches on the new board are correct by referring to 12.4DIP Switches on the PEUa Board.

cross screwdriver, straight screwdriver, diagonal pliers, dustfree cotton cloth, and fibercleaner.

l The new subrack is ready.

Context

CAUTIONPut on an ESD wrist strap and ensure that it is properly connected to the ESD connector on thecabinet.

CAUTIONl The replacement of the RSS interrupts all the services carried on the RNC.

l The replacement of the RBS interrupts all the services carried on this subrack.

l Replace a subrack only when the traffic is low, for example, at midnight.

l It is the best for at least three persons to replace the heavy subrack.

Procedure

Step 1 Set the DIP switches on the new subrack according to the recorded settings.

Step 2 Check whether the labels on the cables are legible. If the labels are illegible, relabel the cablesto avoid faulty connections after the subrack is replaced.

Step 3 Record the installation positions of the boards in the subrack.

Step 4 Check the type of the subrack to be replaced as follows:

If the subrack is... Then...

RBS Turn off the power distribution switch of the subrack to be replaced.

RSS 1. Turn outwards the ejector levers on the OMUa, as shown in part (1)of Removing the OMUa board. Repeat this step if there are twoOMUa boards.

2. After the OFFLINE LED on the OMUa is ON steadily, turn off thepower distribution switch of the subrack to be replaced.

NOTE

For the function of each switch, refer to the label on the front panel of the power distribution box, as shownin 5.2 Layout of Power Switches on the RNC Cabinet.

Step 5 Remove the cables connected to the subrack. For details, refer to the 9 Replacing RNCCables.

Step 6 Pull the boards out of the subrack, as shown in 8.2.1 Removing the RNC Board. Then put themin the ESD boxes or bags.

Step 7 Remove the eight captive screws that fix the subrack on the cabinet at the front of the cabinet.

Step 8 One person pushes the subrack along the guide rails from the back of the cabinet. The other twopersons hold the mounting ears on the subrack and pull the subrack out of the cabinet.

Step 9 The two persons hold the mounting ears and the bottom of the new subrack at the front of thecabinet. Then push the subrack into the cabinet along the guide rails and fasten the captive screwsto fix the subrack to the cabinet.

Step 10 Install the power cable, grounding cable, and PGND cable of the new subrack.

Step 11 Turn on the switch that controls the subrack on the power distribution box.

Step 12 Mount the boards into the subrack by referring to the records in Step 3 and 8.2.2 Inserting theRNC Board.

NOTE

If the RSS is replaced, insert the OMUa first for power-on and data loading.

Step 13 Connect cables to the subrack. For details, refer to 9 Replacing RNC Cables.

Step 14 Commission the loaded data and services.For detailed procedures, refer to the RNC Commissioning Guide.

8.19 Replacing an RNC Power Distribution BoxWhen an RNC power distribution box is faulty, replace the power distribution box. It takes about25 minutes to replace a power distribution box.

Prerequisitel The tools for replacing the alarm box signal cable are ready. The tools are ESD wrist strap,

cross screwdriver, and straight screwdriver.l The new power distribution box is ready and meets field requirements.

Context

CAUTIONl The replacement of the lower power distribution box in the RSR cabinet cuts off the power

and all the services carried on the subrack are interrupted.

Step 2 Record the states of switches SW1 to SW6 on the power distribution box. Set the ones in ONstate to OFF.

Step 3 Set the switch on the PDF to OFF to cut off the power to the power distribution box.

Step 4 Remove the cables from the power distribution box. Figure 8-8 shows the cable connections tothe back panel of the power distribution box.1. Check the engineering labels on the power input cables that connect to the ports, as shown

in part 1 of Figure 8-8. If the labels are illegible, attach temporary labels and record theconnections of the cables. Then remove the cables.

2. Check the engineering labels on the power output cables that connect to the ports, as shownin part 2 of Figure 8-8. If the labels are illegible, attach temporary labels and record theconnections of the cables. Then remove the cables.

3. Remove the signal monitoring cable that connects to the port, as shown in part 3 of Figure8-8.

4. Remove the PGND cable that connects to the busbar of the cabinet from the box, as shownin Figure 8-8.

Step 5 Remove the captive screws that fix the faulty box at the front of the cabinet.

Step 6 Hold the handle on the box and take the box out of the cabinet.

Step 3 Hold the handle and pull the fan box along the guide rails. The rotation of fan blades slows downand finally stops. When the fan box is almost out of the cabinet, hold the bottom of the fan boxwith one hand and the handle with the other hand. Then pull the fan box out of the cabinet.

CAUTIONWhen replacing the fan box, do not reach your hand into the fan box. The rotation of the fanblades or the metal projections on the fan may hurt your hand.

Step 4 Keep the replaced fan box for later handling.

Step 5 Mount the new fan box into subrack along the guide rails by holding the bottom of the fan boxwith one hand and the handle with the other. Then hold the handle with both hands and push thefan box along the guide rails until the fan starts to work.

Step 6 Fasten the captives screws on the panel.

Step 7 After replacing the fan box, check the following items in Table 8-4.

9 Replacing RNC Cables

About This Chapter

This part describes how to replace the Ethernet cable, trunk cable, optical cable, alarm box signalcable, clock signal cable, and the signal monitoring cable of the power distribution box in theRNC.

9.2 Replacing an RNC Ethernet CableIt takes 5 to 20 minutes to replace an Ethernet cable, depending on the connections of the Ethernetcable.

9.3 Replacing an RNC Trunk CableThe RNC trunk cables are of two types: 75-ohm coaxial and 120-ohm twisted pair. It takes about10 minutes to replace the trunk cable.

9.4 Replacing an RNC Optical CableThe RNC optical cables are of various types such as LC/PC-SC/PC single mode optical cable,LC/PC-SC/PC multi-mode optical cable, LC/PC-FC/PC single mode optical cable, LC/PC-FC/PC multi-mode optical cable, LC/PC-LC/PC single mode optical cable, and LC/PC-LC/PCmulti-mode optical cable. It takes about five minutes to replace the optical cable.

9.5 Replacing an RNC Clock Signal CableIt takes about 5 to 20 minutes to replace a clock signal cable, depending on the connections ofthe cable.

9.6 Replacing an Alarm Box Signal CableIt takes about 5 to 20 minutes to replace an alarm box signal cable, depending on the installationpositions of the alarm box.

9.7 Replacing a Signal Monitoring Cable of the Power Distribution BoxIt takes about 10 minutes to replace a signal monitoring cable of the power distribution box.

9.1 Cabling Specifications for RNC Signal CablesThe cabling specifications refer to the minimum bending radiuses of signal cables, therequirements for routing cables, and the requirements for binding cables.

Requirements for Installing RNC Signal Cablesl If the connectors of the signal cables are made before delivery, pack the connectors with

soft and durable materials to avoid damage during the cabling.

l Ensure that the jackets of the signal cables are not damaged during the cabling.

l The actual installation positions must meet the requirements of site survey and the dataconfiguration.

l The actual bending radius of the signal cable should be greater than the minimum bendingradius.

l The optical cables must be sheathed using protective pipes, that is, corrugated pipes andwinding pipes, for the cabling outside the cabinet.

l When installing the optical cables, do not step on or stretch the optical cables lest the opticalcables may be damaged.

l Use different methods to remove the optical connectors. Do not pull out the connectorsforcibly. Otherwise, the optical ports may be damaged.

l Cover the optical connectors not in use with dustproof caps.

l The TX end of the E1/T1 trunk cable must be connected to the RX end of the peer E1/T1cable.

l The RNC and the peer equipment might use different types of cables, such as the 75-ohmcoaxial cable and 120-ohm twisted pair cable. In this case, use a adapter or a transfer cablefor impedance conversion between the cables of different types.

Minimum Bending Radiuses of Signal Cables

Table 9-1 lists the requirements for the bending radiuses of signal cables. Ensure that therequirements are met.

l Ensure that the requirements for the bending radiuses of signal cables listed in Table 9-1are met.

l Reserve extra length of the signal cables near connectors for the convenience of insertingand pulling the connectors.

l Do not cross the signal cables over each other when routing the signal cables inside thecabinet. The signal cables shall be led out along the two sides of the subrack. The cableswhose connectors are far away from the ports shall be arranged on the outer side of thecable bundle. The cables whose connectors are near the ports shall be arranged on the innerside of the cable bundle. The cables must not cross each other. The cables shall be routedsmoothly without any tangling.

l When the signal cables are routed on the cable ladder and the distance between the cableladder and the top of the cabinet exceeds 800 mm, use a ladder to lead the signal cablesdownwards.

l Lead the signal cables into or out of the cabinet through the cable holes, as shown in Figure9-1. Before routing, remove the plastic rodent-proof cover plate from the cable holes. Afterrouting, cut the appropriate plastic rodent-proof cover plates, and cover the cable holes inthe upper and lower enclosures. Use screws to fix the cover plate that covers the cable holein the lower enclosure.

l The cabling shall be in accordance with the engineering design.

l The cabling is clear, proper, and smooth at the bends. The cables are laid in parallel.

l The cabling facilitates maintenance and capacity expansion.

Requirements for Binding RNC Signal Cablesl Bind signal cables separately from power cables. When signal cables are laid parallel to

power cables, leave more than 10 mm between signal cables and power cables inside thecabinet and more than 100 mm between them outside the cabinet.

l Bind the signal cables at the inlet and outlet of the cable trough and at the bends, as shownin Figure 9-5. Do not bind the signal cables in the cable trough.

l Bind optical cables in pairs at intervals of 150 mm. Cover the optical cables outside thecabinet by corrugated pipes.

l Bind the cables that are routed on the cable rack and bundle them neatly.

l Reserve extra length of the signal cables near connectors for the convenience of insertingand pulling the connectors.

l The tips of the cable ties point to the same direction. The signal cables are bound in propertightness. For indoor cable ties, cut off the surplus completely. For outdoor cable ties, leavean extra length of 3 mm to 5 mm.

l The cable ties shall be spaced evenly. For the trunk cables outside the cabinet, it isrecommended that you bind them at an interval of 1,000 mm. For the trunk cables insidethe cabinet, it is recommended to bind them at an interval of 150 mm to 200 mm. ForEthernet cables, it is recommended to bind them at an interval of 70±5 mm.

9.2 Replacing an RNC Ethernet CableIt takes 5 to 20 minutes to replace an Ethernet cable, depending on the connections of the Ethernetcable.

Prerequisitel The tools for replacing the alarm box signal cable are ready. The tools are ESD wrist strap,

Ethernet cable tester, Ethernet cable pliers, and diagonal pliers.

l The materials such as cable tie or wax string are ready.

l The new Ethernet cable is ready.

Context

CAUTIONPut on an ESD wrist strap and ensure that it is properly connected to the ESD connector on thecabinet.

CAUTIONl The replacement of the Ethernet cables of the LMT interrupts the communications between

the LMT and the BAM.

l The ports on the SCUa boards for inter-subrack connections support the port trunkingfunction. The replacement of either cable does not have negative effect on the RNC.

l For the FG2a, when the RNC is connected to the peer equipment by using only the Ethernetcables, all the services between them are interrupted during the replacement.

l The OMUa board is configured with two Ethernet cables. The replacement of either cabledoes not affect the services.

Confirm the quantity, length, and type of the Ethernet cable to be replaced. Ethernet cables ofdifferent manufacturers differ in color and diameter. Ensure that the new Ethernet cable iscompatible with the cable to be replaced.

Procedure

Step 1 Prepare a new Ethernet cable with a proper length and the correct type. Note that an extra lengthshould be reserved.

Step 2 Make the RJ-45 connector for the new cable by referring to Making Connectors.

Step 3 Stick a temporary label to the new cable to distinguish it from the others.It is recommended that the content on the temporary label is consistent with that on the old label.

Step 4 Lay out the new Ethernet cable according to the original connections. If the field connectionsare different, route the cable as required.

Step 5 Disconnect the Ethernet cable to be replaced from the ports.

Step 6 Connect the new Ethernet cable to the original ports.

Step 7 Replace the temporary label on the new cable with the engineering label.

The content on the engineering label must be consistent with that on the temporary label. Fordetails, refer to Engineering Labels of Cables.

Step 8 Bind the new Ethernet cable.

Step 9 Check the items as listed in Table 9-2.

Procedure

Step 1 Prepare a new trunk cable with a proper length and the correct type. Ensure that an extra lengthis reserved.

Step 2 Make a connector for the trunk cable to the DDF by referring to Making Connectors.

Step 3 Stick a temporary label to each new cable to distinguish it from the others. It is recommendedthat the content on the temporary label be consistent with that on the old label.

Step 6 Disconnect the trunk cable from the DDF.

Step 7 Connect the new trunk cable to the original ports on the RNC (using the ESD wrist strap) andDDF.

Step 8 Replace the temporary labels on the new cable with the engineering labels.

The content on the engineering label must be consistent with that on the temporary label. Fordetails, refer to Engineering Labels of Cables.

Step 9 Bind the new trunk cable.

Step 4 On the alarm box side, power off the alarm box, unlock the alarm box, remove the front panel,and then disconnect the alarm box signal cable.

Step 5 Link the new signal cable to the LMT computer and the alarm box by referring to the originalconnections of the signal cable.

Step 6 Reinstall the front panel and lock the alarm box.

Step 7 Attach the engineering labels to both ends of the new alarm box signal cable. The content onthe new label must be the same as that on the old one.

Step 8 Power on the alarm box.

9.7 Replacing a Signal Monitoring Cable of the PowerDistribution Box

It takes about 10 minutes to replace a signal monitoring cable of the power distribution box.

Prerequisitel The tools for replacing the signal monitoring cable are ready. The tools are ESD wrist strap

and diagonal pliers.

l The materials such as cable tie or wax string are ready.

l The new signal monitoring cable is ready.

Context

CAUTIONPut on an ESD wrist strap and ensure that it is properly connected to the ESD connector on thecabinet.

Procedure

Step 1 Stick a temporary label to the new cable to distinguish it from the others. It is recommended thatcontent on the temporary label be consistent with that on the old label.

Step 2 Route the signal monitoring cable.

Step 3 Disconnect the signal monitoring cable to be replaced from the ports.

Step 4 Connect the new signal monitoring cable to the original ports.

Step 5 Replace the temporary labels on the new cable with the engineering labels.

The content on the engineering label must be consistent with that on the temporary label. Fordetails, refer to Engineering Labels of Cables.

Step 6 Bind the signal monitoring cable.

Step 7 After replacing the signal monitoring cable of the power distribution box, check the followingitems in Table 9-6.

10.1 Adding an SPMWhen the RNC capacity cannot meet the traffic requirements, the SPM must be added.

Prerequisitel The LMT is started and the LMT properly communicates with the BAM.

l The installation space for the new SPM is available in the RSS/RBS subrack.

l Ensure that the program files of the boards in the directory \BAM active workspaceinstallation directory\LoadData on the BAM are correct.

Context

CAUTIONPut on an ESD wrist strap and ensure that it is properly connected to the ESD connector on thecabinet.

NOTE

The addition of the SPM does not affect the existing services.

Procedure

Step 1 Install the SPUa boards and DPUbs of the new SPM into the subrack, as described in 8.2.2Inserting the RNC Board.

The new board automatically loads the data configuration file and the RUN LED blinks every0.125 s (0.125 s ON and 0.125 s OFF).

Step 2 If the RUN LED blinks every 1 s (1 s ON and 1 s OFF), run the DSP BRD command to querythe status of the new board.

Only one SPUa is configured and CPU status of the SPUa and DPUb isNormal.

Context

The addition the RBS subrack does not affect the existing services.

Procedure

Step 1 According to the location of the RBS subrack, set the DIP switches on the new subrack byreferring to 12.1 DIP Switches on RNC Subracks.

Step 2 Set the switches on the power distribution box for the subrack to OFF.For the function of each switch, refer to the label on the front panel of the power distributionbox, as shown in 5.2 Layout of Power Switches on the RNC Cabinet.

Step 3 Start the LMT.

Step 4 Two persons hold the mounting ears and the bottom of the new subrack at the front of the cabinetand slowly push the subrack along the guide rails into the cabinet. Then fasten the screws to fixthe subrack.

Step 5 Connect the power cables to the new subrack, as shown in Connections of Power Cables andPGND Cables in the RNC Cabinet.

Step 6 Install the boards in the new subrack as described in 8.2.2 Inserting the RNC Board.

Step 7 Install the two pairs of Ethernet cables that connect the SCUa boards in the RBS and the RSS.

Step 8 Connect the other cables to the new subrack.

Step 9 If the newly added subrack is located at the bottom of the cabinet, connect the signal monitoringcable of the power distribution box to the subrack.

Step 10 Check the connections of cables to new subrack.

Step 11 Turn on the switch on the power distribution box for the new subrack.

Step 12 Start the LMT. In the upper right part of the window, check the configuration mode of the RSSsubrack (subrack 0), as shown in the red-circled part of Figure 10-1.

If... Then...

The configuration mode of subrack 0 is notonline.

1. Run the SET ONLINE command on theLMT to change the configuration mode ofsubrack 0 to online.

2. Go to Step 13.

11.1 LEDs on the Front Panel of the RNC Power Distribution BoxThe power distribution box has two LEDs on its front panel. The two LEDs are labeled RUNand ALM.

11.2 LED on Fan BoxLED STATUS is on the front panel of the fan box. The LED blinks red or green, indicatingdifferent operational statuses of the fan box.

11.3 LEDs on the OMUa BoardThere are five LEDs on the panel of the OMUa board. The five LEDs are RUN, ALM, ACT,HD, and OFFLINE.

11.4 LEDs on the CSUa BoardThere are 11 LEDs on the panel of the CSUa board. Among them, three LEDs are RUN,ALM, and ACT. The other 8 LEDs are used to indicate the status of 10/100/1000BASE-T ports.Each 10/100/1000BASE-T port has two LEDs. The two LEDs are LINK and ACT.

12 DIP Switches on RNC Components

About This Chapter

This part describes the DIP switches on the RNC subracks and RNC boards.

12.1 DIP Switches on RNC SubracksThe DIP switch on the RSS subrack is the same as that on the RBS subrack. The DIP switchesare used to set the subrack number.

12.2 DIP Switches on the AEUa BoardThe AEUa board provides five DIP switches, namely, S2, S4, S6, S8, and S10.

12.3 DIP Switches on the AOUa BoardThe AOUa board has two DIP switches which are both SW1. The two DIP switches controlsthe mode setting of the two STM-1/OC-3 optical ports.

12.4 DIP Switches on the PEUa BoardThe PEUa board provides five DIP switches, namely, S2, S4, S6, S8, and S10.

12.5 DIP Switch on the MDMC BoardThe MDMC board provides one DIP switch. The DIP switch is S2.

12.6 DIP Switches on the PFCU BoardThe PFCU board has one DIP switch. The DIP switch is SW1 and consists of four bits. The DIPswitch is used to set the address of the PFCU board.

12.1 DIP Switches on RNC SubracksThe DIP switch on the RSS subrack is the same as that on the RBS subrack. The DIP switchesare used to set the subrack number.

Location of the DIP switches

The DIP switches are located on the back of the RSS subrack and the RBS subrack, as shownin Components of the RNC Subrack.

Appearance of DIP Switch

Figure 12-1 shows the area of the DIP switch.

Description of DIP Switches

The DIP switch on the RNC subrack has eight bits. The higher the bit is, the more significant itis. If the bit is set to ON, it indicates 0. If the bit is set to OFF, it indicates 1. Table 12-1 providesthe definitions of the bits.

l If bit 8 is set to 0, the SCUa board can be started only by theloading on the OMUa board.

l If bit 8 is set to 1, a loading request is sent to the OMUa boardbefore the SCUa board is started. If the OMUa board respondswithin 30 s, the SCUa board is started by the loading on the OMUaboard. If the OMUa board fails to respond within 30 s, the SCUaboard is started by the loading on Flash.

For RNC, bit 8 is usually set to 1.

Setting of DIP switchesTable 12-2 shows the setting of the DIP switches for the RNC subracks. Subrack 0 is an RSSsubrack. Subracks 1–5 are RBS subracks.

CAUTIONl All DIP switches of the PEUa are on the front panel of the sub-board. The front panel is faced

to and combined with the bottom plate, and so the DIP switches are hidden in between.

l DIP switches S2, S4, S6, S8, and S10 are set from the side. As shown in Figure 12-2, thereare two square holes between sub-boards, one between sub-boards S2 and S4, and the otherbetween sub-boards S8 and S6. Through the holes, you can set DIP switches S2, S4, S8, andS6. S10 is located in the right corner of the sub-board where you can set it along the side.

l To set S2, S4, S6, or S8 to ON, move the DIP switch inwards. To set S2, S4, S6, or S8 toOFF, move the DIP switch outwards. To set S10 to ON, move it outwards. To set S10 toOFF, move it inwards.

S2, S4, S6, and S8 on the AEUa are used to enable or disable the grounding of 0 to 31 E1s/T1s/J1s at the TX end. S10 is used to set E1 in balanced mode or unbalanced mode, and T1 or J1 inwork mode. Figure 12-2 describes S2, S4, S6, S8, and S10 in detail.

l If signals are transmitted in E1 unbalanced mode, the signals are transmitted through the 75-ohm coaxialcable and the TX end of the cable is grounded, that is, the corresponding DIP switch is set to ON. Ifsignals are transmitted in other modes, the signals are transmitted through the 120-ohm twisted paircable and the TX end of the cable is not grounded, that is, the corresponding DIP switch is set to OFF.

l All the DIP switches are set to E1 balanced mode by default, that is, all the bits of S2, S4, S6, and S8are set to OFF. For S10, the first bit is set to OFF and the second to ON.

l Ensure that the matching between the different types of DIP switches is correct.

12.3 DIP Switches on the AOUa BoardThe AOUa board has two DIP switches which are both SW1. The two DIP switches controlsthe mode setting of the two STM-1/OC-3 optical ports.

To set the address, pull out the WDMB as described in the 8.4 Replacing an MDMC Board.Then, set S2 as listed in Table 12-6.

CAUTIONIn the RNC, the address of the MDMC board is 0 by default. Therefore, the DIP switch on theMDMC board must be set as described in Table 12-6.

12.6 DIP Switches on the PFCU BoardThe PFCU board has one DIP switch. The DIP switch is SW1 and consists of four bits. The DIPswitch is used to set the address of the PFCU board.

Figure 12-6 shows the DIP switch on the PFCU board.

To set the address, pull out the fan box. Then, set the DIP switch as described in Table 12-7.For how to pull out the fan box, refer to 8.20 Replacing an RNC Fan Box. After the setting,the address of the PFCU board is 1.
