Audie Murphy (19251971) was one of the mostdecorated American combat soldiers of World WarII, receiving every military combat award for valoravailable from the U.S. Army, as well as Frenchand Belgian awards for heroism. Coming from apoor sharecropping family of Irish descent in

Texas, he served in nine World War II campaigns, receiving theMedal of Honor after single-handedly holding off an entire companyof German soldiers for an hour at the Colmar Pocket in France. Afterthe war, he appeared in more than forty feature films, mostlywesterns; his most successful film was To Hell and Back (1955),based on his war memoirs. During the Korean War, Murphy wascommissioned as an officer in the 36th Infantry Division of the TexasNational Guard. Possessing a natural gift for rhyme, he collaboratedon numerous songs between 1962 and 1970. He suffered from whatwould today be termed posttraumatic stress disorder, and wasplagued by money problems in the last few years of his life, butrefused offers to appear in alcohol and cigarette commercials toavoid setting a bad example. Murphy died in a plane crash inVirginia, and was interred with full military honors at ArlingtonNational Cemetery. (Full article...)

A caterpillar of Lymantria dispar dispar, also known as the gypsymoth. First described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758, the gypsy moth isfound throughout Eurasia, where it is considered a pest. The larvaeemerge from egg masses in the spring, and then are dispersed by thewind and begin feeding on leaves. They are initially diurnal, butbecome nocturnal after their fourth molting.
