HP Inks

HP inks: quality you can trust in every drop

UV-curable inksUV-curable inks from HP support the growing need for ever-faster production speeds and for rigid printing applications, particularly for POP displays, outdoor signage and building graphics, while also delivering high image quality and enabling environment-friendly printing practices.Featuring an extensive color gamut and offered in 4, 6 and 8 color confi gurations for different HP fl atbed, hybrid and roll-to-sheet printers, HP UV inks deliver brilliant, saturated colors comparable to the highest quality solvent inks. They provide excellent adhesion to a wide variety of fl exible and rigid media, with high durability and optimized outdoor fade and abrasion resistance.Designed for mid and high-volume printing, HP UV inks and wide-format printers do not release volatile organic compounds and they support more compact production fl oor layouts than is possible with many solutions that utilize other types of inks.

White inkThe HP range of UV-curable inks includes HP FB210 Scitex White Ink, an acrylate-based ink used by the HP Scitex FB6100. This white ink prints white data on nonwhite substrates to create a high-quality white background on opaque and clear substrates. The ink is highly pigmented, giving it excellent opacity, covering power, and whiteness. In addition, the ink

has been formulated to ensure superb adhesion to a variety of plastics and othersmooth materials.

Solvent inksThe HP Scitex range of solvent inks comprises several series, each developed for a particular HP Scitex industrial wide-format printer and particular types of applications. To meet the different needs of the applications targeted by the various printers, some HP Scitex solvent inks series are available in eight colors; others in four or six colors. Most ink series offer a choice of ‘Classic’ and ‘Supreme’ grades, which are not simply ‘Economy’ and ‘Premium’ versions, but are formulated to meet specifi c application requirements.• ‘Classic’, the most cost-effective solvent ink series,

is designed for up to one year outdoor durability, making it attractive for shorter-life applications.

• ‘Supreme’ series solvent inks offer up to two years UV durability and other benefi ts that make them the preferred option for their target applications.

Low-solvent inksHP Designjet 8000s, 9000s and 10000s printing systems use innovative low-solvent1 pigmented inks that combine many of the key quality and productivity benefi ts of solvent ink printing with a more environment-friendly process. Developed specifi cally for HP Designjet large-format printers and their print heads, HP low-solvent ink formulations enable a higher concentration of colorants in the

This makes HP Vivera inks ideal for digital fi ne art (DFA), photography, proofs, photorealistic images, full color maps and signage applications.Unlaminated prints made with HP Vivera inks last for over one year indoors; when laminated, they last for three or more years. Furthermore, when combined with HP media and kept out of direct sun, they offer superior display permanence of over 200 years3.

HP Latex InksHP Latex Inks are pigmented, water-based inks designed for commercial and industrial printing applications. These new inks use HP’s innovative aqueous-dispersed polymer (“Latex”) technology to provide print durability and display permanence comparable to solvent inks. The water-based formulation provides clear advantages over solvent inks by reducing the total impact of printing on the environment and facilitating an improved print production environment. Designed with the environment in mind, HP Latex Inks produce odorless prints4, and don’t require special ventilation. The HP Designjet L65500 Printer with six colors of HP Latex Inks (cyan, magenta, yellow, black, light magenta, and light cyan) produces a wide color gamut – comparable to solvent-ink technology5 – for rich hues and vibrant tones. Outdoor prints produced with HP Latex Inks achieve display permanence up to three years unlaminated and up to fi ve years laminated6. The prints are scratch, smudge and water resistant on a range of media, with performance comparable to that of solventink technology.

inks to produce a wider gamut of rich, saturated color. They provide excellent durability without lamination on low-cost, uncoated media. Prints produced using HP low-solvent inks resist fading for up to three years without lamination and are scratch-, smear- and crack-resistant2.Because HP low-solvent inks produce fewer volatile organic compounds than solvent inks, odor is reduced. While there is still some odor, a fairly straight forward ventilation system can keep the working environment pleasant and safe for your employees.

Water-based inksHP offers water-based (or “aqueous”) inks for the HP Scitex FB6700 fl atbed industrial printer.Developed especially for the printer and for the printer’s Aprion® print heads, these environment-friendly inks offer a wider color gamut than is available with solvent inks and they enable you to achieve excellent, cost effective results on a diverse range of media, and at using high production speeds.

Odorless, non-fl ammable, non-toxic and non-reactive, HP water-based inks have been granted “Green Label” status, making them ideal for food packaging and other applications where contact between various substances and a printed product is a concern. They are UV-, abrasion- and water-resistant and highly fl exible; they will not crack when the printed output is folded, giving you maximum application versatility for your business.

What’s more, HP water-based inks are excellent for applications that require small-detail printing, such as the fi ne print on packaging, and they overcome many of the challenges of printing on corrugated media.

HP Vivera inksEight- color HP Vivera professional inks, which are used by the HP Designjet Z6100 Printer series and selected other Designjet printers, are pigment-based and formulated to deliver exceptional image quality, permanence and durability across a broad media

HP Latex Inks

HP Latex Inks deliver – long-lasting durable prints withstand the elements; sharp, vivid-image quality stands up to close inspection. Odorless prints1 produced with HP Latex Inks emit extremely low levels of VOCs (volatile organic compounds). No special ventilation is required to meet occupational exposure limits, and there are no requirements for air discharge permitting, facilitating an improved printing environment2. These inks produce great results across a wide range of media – including most low-cost, uncoated solvent-compatible media – and eye-catching, consistent results with Original HP large-format media designed together with HP Latex Inks. Broad outdoor and indoor application versatility gives print service providers more possibilities to meet customer needs.Because these innovative new inks do not produce ozone emissions during printing and contain no hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) or sensitizers3, they are in compliance with a number of industry-leading certifi cations including Nordic Swan.

HP Latex Inks are pigmented, water-based inks designed for commercial and industrial printing applications. These new inks use HP’s innovative

aqueous-dispersed polymer (“Latex”) technology to provide print durability and display permanence comparable to solvent inks. The water-based formulation provides clear advantages over solvent inks by reducing the total impact of printing on the environment and facilitating an improved print production environment.HP Latex Inks consist of a liquid ink vehicle that carries latex polymer and pigment particles to the surface of the print media. Physical and chemical properties of the ink vehicle are critical both for drop ejection performance and control of ink-media interactions. These properties are obtained by formulating the ink vehicle with a combination of water (~ 70%), co-solvents for aqueous inks (~ 30%), and additives.High water content gives HP Latex Inks the high surface tension and low viscosity that are ideal for use in HP Thermal Inkjet printheads. As the im- major component of HP Latex Inks, water offers portant benefi ts to commercial and industrial production environments; it produces no VOCs, requires no special handling, and is non-toxic, non-fl ammable, and non-combustible. Water alone is not a practical ink vehicle for printing on the wide variety of media used in

The co-solvents in HP Latex Inks are similar in type and concentration to co-solvents used in HP’s water-based Designjet inks, which are used in offi ce-like environments and produce extremely los VOC emissions.A key innovation in HP Latex Inks is the incorporation of latex polymer particles. “Latex” is a term that describes a stable, aqueous dispersion of microscopic polymer particles. It is important not to confuse the polymers used in HP Latex Inks with those found in natural materials, such as latex rubber. While some individuals experience skin irritation from contact with natural latex compounds, the synthetic polymer used in HP Latex Inks are non-allergenic.HP Latex Inks are not classifi ed as hazardous material per transportation requirements, do not carry hazard warming labels, and are not considered hazardous waste4.

Each printhead used in HP Wide Scan Printing Technology prints a swath 4.25 inches (108mm) wide1.These wide printheads are made by precisely placing and aligning five (5) of the 2,112-nozzle printhead chips, on a ceramic substrate. A small overlap between the nozzle arrays of neighboring chips further minimizes any visible effects on print quality between chips. The combination of three (3) 4.25 inches (108 mm) printheads, which produce a 8.5-inch print swath, and precise media advancement using HP’s proprietary OMAS facilitates outdoor-quality prints at up to 800 ft2/hr (70 m2/hr), in a 2-pass unidirectional print mode, and indoor-quality prints at up to 400 ft2/hr (35 m2/hr), in a 4-pass unidirectional print mode.The ceramic substrate is a stack of six (6) ceramic circuit boards that are fused together into an integrated assembly. This multi-layer ceramic module has power and ground planes and routes

electrical signals to the five (5) printhead chips. 10,560 nozzles are operated with only 76 electrical interconnections to the printer2. The printhead array prints two colors of ink with 5,280 nozzles per color. With a 12 pl drop volume, operating all 10,560 nozzles at 24 KHz could theoretically deliver up to 180 ml of ink per minute3. The printheads used in HP Wide Scan Printing Technology have been designed together with HP Latex Inks for low user maintenance, reliable performance, and maximum productivity. HP Latex Inks are formulated to keep critical components of the printhead clean to optimize drop ejection performance and to provide consistent, dependable results.When necessary, the user can remove a used printhead and install a new one without the expense, printer down-time, and inconvenience of a service call.

HP Wide Scan Printing Technology is based on HP Wide Scan Printheads and the HP Optical Media Advance Sensor (OMAS). Working together, these technologies deliver high-quality at high-speed using a wide print swath and accurate, longer moves of the print medium between scans of the print carriage. Accurate media positioning takes advantage of the throughput potential of wide print swaths enabling printers based on HP Latex Printing Technologies to deliver breakthrough print speeds in the price and performance categories for which these printers are intended.

HP Wide Scan Printing Technology is a scalable platform for industrial printing. Using printheads each printing two colors of ink, 4-, 6-, and more color writing systems can be built. For example, the 6-color inks writing system of the HP Designjet L65500 Printer uses three (3) HP Wide Scan Printheads and have a total of 31,680 nozzles (5,280 per color).

Precise and accurate motion control of the media as it advances in the printing process is a critical element of image quality.Media position errors of a fraction of a dot row can be visible as banding - either a white line across the image or a color band that is lighter or darker than its surroundings. While multiple-pass print modes can help to hide these bands, image quality improvement is gained at the expense of productivity. Most inkjet printers make indirect measurement of media advance by using an encoder to measure the rotation of a mechanical element in the media drive system, such as a gear or drive roller. The media motion control system can be calibrated to convert this rotational signal into an estimate of media position and velocity. But, although the rotational position may be measured accurately, there are a number of variable factors that affect the conversion of rotary motion of drive train elements into linear motion of the media, and these can lead to media advance errors. The HP Optical Media Advance Sensor is a tiny, custom “machine vision” system built into the printer platen. The sensor looks through the platen at the back side of the print media. Since the microscopic structure of the media surface provides the signal used for position measurement, no printed tracking patterns or artificial marks are required. The sensor module, only 3 inches (75mm) high, consists of an optical assembly and printed circuit

board. The optical assembly has a hardened glass window that is normally in contact with the back side of the media, an array of bright red light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to provide illumination, and a lens system to project a magnified image of media surface texture onto a digial image sensor.The HP Optical Media Advance Sensor works by taking digital images of the microscopic structure on the back side of the media as it moves through the printer. Two images of the same area on the surface are taken about 3mm apart as the media moves continuously. The LEDs flash to freeze the motion. The images are compared and precise physical offset between images is computed in real-time by sophisticated image correlation algorithms processed by a dedicated Digital Signal Processor (DSP).With a three-sigma measurement accuracy better than ±0.45%, the HP Optical Media Advance Sensor is 2 to 10-times more accurate than a conventional rotary encoder on the final media drive roller.Because the HP Optical Media Advance Sensor provides direct measurement of linear media motion, it is not affected by mechanical tolerances in the media drive system and changes in media thickness, stiffness, and coefficient of friction. This means consistent quality in images, area fills, and graphics over a wide range of temperature and humidity conditions, and dependable performance over the life of the printer in production printing environments.
