How to Recalibrate with the ONYX Software

How to set up your printer[s] for predictable and sustainable output

[The following methods are valid for ‘halftone’ print modes. Halftone print modes use the Onyx Stochastic, FDRP, Ordered Dither and Screening dot patterns].

Requirements:

•AnOnyx*printmode/printerprofileforyourdeviceandmedia(*alsoreferredtoasprint,ormedia characterization) •Aspectrophotometer,orsupportedon-boardspectrophotometer •OnyxMediaManager(ONYXPosterShop,ONYXProductionHouseorONYXThrive).

*NOTE:ONYXRIPCenterallowsRecalibration,butdoesnotincludeMediaManagerandthusdoesnotsupportthisworkflow.ForONYXRIPCenter,pleaserefertothesectionon“HowtoRecalibrate.”

When using profiles from Onyx, or a third party (e.g. profiles were not created using your printer)

1.Performallnecessaryprinteradjustments,includinganyon-boardprintercalibrations.2.Downloadandinstallprofile[s]tobeused.3.Loadthemediaandperformanynecessary“on-printer”adjustments.4.FromOnyxMediaManager“medialibrary”,rightclickthemedia(orprintmode)andclickcopy.

5.Addthedateattheendofthecopyname(recommended),oranynameyouprefer.6. Perform a recalibration of the copied mode.

7. Do a test print and verify output.8.Ifprintoutputissatisfactory,repeatthesestepsforanyotherprofilesyouwillbeusing.9.Whenallprofileshavebeencalibratedtoyourmachine[s]Export/SaveanOMLfilecontaining there-calibratedversionsofallprofiles-thiswillbethemasterback-upforyourmachine.[Ex: AqueousJet_1100_Master.oml”].10.Likewise,renametheoriginaldownloadedfileforalastresortbackup[Ex:“AqueousJet_1100_ Download.prninst”]

NOTE:Whenusingmultiplesofthesameprintermodels–Itisrecommendedtorepeatsteps3through8.While this may seem like a lot of effort it will ensure that any discrepancy in hardware is accounted for by calibrating each machine to its current hardware condition.

When using profiles you (or a consultant) created using your printer.

1.Whenprofilingiscompletedandoutputissatisfactory-Export/SaveanOMLfilecontainingall profiles-thiswillbethemasterback-upforyourmachine[Ex:“AqueousJet_1100_Master.oml”].

Going forward, whenever you choose to recalibrate, it is recommended to make a dated copy of the previousprintmode(Step3).Thisisimportantbecauseinsomecasestheconditionoftheprintermayhavechanged to such a degree that it is no longer possible to recalibrate to the previous condition. Inthiscaseyoushouldverifytheprinterisfunctioningproperly,makeanynecessaryrepairsanddooneofthe following;

1.Beginningwiththemasterback-up(yourveryfirstre-calibrationonyourmachine,Step6)doa new recalibration to the repaired state of the hardware.2.Importtheoriginaldownloadedprofileandrecalibratetocurrentprintercondition.3.Intheeventthatprinterchangesaresoseverethatrecalibrationfailstocompensate,itis recommended to create a completely new print mode.

How to do Recalibration.

AlthoughRecalibrationcanbedoneinMediaManager,it’sprobablymoreconvenientfortheprinteroperator to do this in conjunction with daily job submission work. So Onyx has added a toolbar button in Rip Queue to do recalibration right from the queue.

NOTE:Havingamasterbackupoftheoriginalprintmodeasoutlinedintheprevioussectionisstillagoodidea,asrecalibrationisNOTcurrentlyreversible.Ifadevicehasdriftedbeyondtheabilitytoberecalibrated,doingsowillpermanently‘bake”inthecurrentstateofthedevicetotheprintmode.Inthiscasecreatinganewprintmode(e.gprintcharacterization)istherecommendedcourseofaction.

To do a recalibration from Rip Queue, you need only have a supported color device. Simply click the Recalibrate button on the toolbar and follow the prompts.

Contone Profiles.

ContoneProfiles[RGBContone,CMYKContone,Or“CT”modes]arespecialprintmodesinwhichthehalf-toning process occurs within the printer.

BecausethesegenerallydonotcontainanOnyxCalibration,therecalibrationprocessisdonefromtheprintercontrolpanelorwebinterface–Consulttheprintermanufacturer’sdocumentationforyourprinter.

NOTE:someCMYKContoneprofilesuseanOnyxCalibrationinadditiontotheprinter’scalibration–Inthiscase,boththeOnyxprofileandtheprinter’sinternalprofilemustbere-calibrated.Refertotheappropriatehalftone recalibration process above.
