How Folders Work

Step:1Gmail uses "Labels" instead of traditional "Folders"

Step:2Messages can have labels applied manually or can be automatically sorted using "Filters".

Part:1Moving Messages into Labels

Step:1Check the box next to the message(s) that you want to move.

Step:2Click the Folder button at the top of the page.

Step:3Select "Create new".

Step:4Enter in a name for your label.

Part:2 Automatically Labeling and Hiding Messages

Step:1Click the Gmail Menu button.

Step:2Select "Settings".

Step:3Click the "Filters" tab.

Step:4Click "Create a new filter" at the bottom of the list.

Step:5Enter in the filter's sorting criteria.

Step:6Click "Create filter with this search".

Step:7Check the "Apply the label" box and select the label that you want the filtered messages to be sorted under.

Step:8Check the "Skip the Inbox (Archive it)" box to hide new messages that match the filter.

Step:9Check the "Also apply filter to matching conversations" box if you want the filter to be applied to existing messages.

Step:10Click "Create filter".

Part:3Viewing Your Sorted Mail

Step:1Click a label in the left menu to view its contents.

Step:2Click the "More" button at the bottom of the label list to view all of your labels.

Step:3Move sorted messages to different labels.
