1. Once you have signed into ReferenceUSA, select the U.S. Business/ Employers USA database.
2. Select Advanced Search or Build a List.
3. Select your search criteria On the leE hand side, select the criteria you will use to filter your search criteria. New windows will open in the center column of the page.
4. Ques;ons to Ask When Selec;ng your Criteria What is a compe;tor? A company targe6ng the same clients with a similar product or service. What industry do you operate in? • What product or service are you selling? • Do you have mul6ple products and services? What is your service area/geography? • Who are your regular clients? • Are your clients from a specific area? • What is your sales territory? • Do you compete on a na6onal, state, regional, or local level? Is business size important? • Do you compete with businesses smaller or larger than you? • Are there a number of businesses in your industry that you don’t compete with
because their market share is too small? Other Factors? • Are there other factors that indicate if a business is a compe6tor or not?
4. Enter your search Parameters In the windows in the center of the page complete your search criteria. You will either search and select the criteria, select the criteria from a tree diagram, or select the criteria from a list. Ensure your have selected your results by clicking on the criteria you want to search by. The selected results show up in the selected window.
4. Industry Search Select Keyword SIC/NAICS from the leE hand side. In the center window select SIC codes or NAICS codes to search. Then decided if you are searching all the industries a company operates in or only the primary industries they work in. Write in the industry your are looking to search for and press search. Select the industry or industries that fit your needs. These elements will move to the selected box. You can select mul6ple industries. If you already know the code(s) you are looking to search you can enter the code in the boxes at the boTom of the page.
4. City/State Search
To select for a city or a state select the city/state element from the leE hand column. In the center window type in the city or state and press search. Select the correct city or state from the list and it will move to the selected box. You can select mul6ple ci6es and/or states.
4. Sales Volume Search Select the sales volume from the leE hand column. Select the range you would like to search. If you would like to search outside of these ranges you can select the show more op6ons buTon and enter your own ranges.
5. View Results Press the update count buTon to view how many compe6tors you have. To see who the compe6tors are select view results.
7. Results Page This shows you a list of your compe6tors.
