How to establish “Holistic” Goals
What does the word “Holistic” mean?
Merriam-Webster Dictionary
defines holistic as…
“Relating to or concerned with wholes or with complete systems rather than with the analysis of, treatment of, or dissection into parts...”
Step One in establishing holistic goals…
• Identify your “Governing Values.” What are Governing Values?
• Governing Values are those values that are at the core of your belief system. These are the values that drive your choices, behavior and goals in life.

• Humor• Responsibility• Faith• Integrity• Teamwork• Fitness• Leadership• Wisdom• Trust• Charity
Create a “Master List” of your own Governing Values…
Step Two in establishing holistic goals…
• Identify your “Roles.” What are your Roles?
• Examples are: Father, Mother, Husband, Wife, Brother, Sister, Son, Daughter, Project Manager, Construction Manager, Grand Son, Grand Daughter, Fireman, Surfer, Photographer, Race Car Driver, Artist, Singer, Self, etc.
Step Three in establishing holistic goals…
• Identify your “Relationships.” What are your “Relationships?”
• For each “Role” you have, you also have “Relationships” within each of those “Roles.”
• Examples are: daughters, sons, wife, husband, mother, father, boss, partner, CM, PM, PE, PA, sisters, friends, brothers, significant others, self, etc.
Step Four in establishing holistic goals…
• Think about what you’d like to accomplish (Goals) in relation to your Roles and Relationships and inspired by your Governing Values.

Governing Values have flexibility…
• Option 1: You can choose to have a small list of governing values and apply them to every goal you set and everything you do.
• Option 2: You could choose to have a “Master List” of governing values and then pre-select a few values for each goal. Different goals may have different values empowering them.
