A Primer

What is a Quinzhee?

A Quinzhee is a dome shaped winter shelter that is made by hollowing out a pile of snow.

Materials

• Shovel• Waterproof, breathable clothing or change of

clothes• Bedroll (cardboard, tarp, sleeping pad & bag)• Candle• Water & Food

Scout a Spot

Location is not to be taken lightly.

Consider:

Flat ground

Snow Depth

Shelter from wind

Establish Perimeters

Base

Shovel

You always need it bigger than you think.

Keep Going.

Poke Sticks

Find deadfall.

Break in to 12’ sticks.

Poke sticks into sides of quinzhee.

Sintering

Sintering occurs when snow of different temperatures is combined.

Through this process the shoveled snow hardens.

Your Entrance

A matter of preference.

Wake up to the sun with your door facing east.

or

In windy conditions, ensure door is on leeward side.

Digging it Out

Create a small opening at ground level.

Dig slowly.

Angle upwards.

Push & pull snow out the door.
