Week One: FOCUS - Introducing How To Be Smart from the Inside Out! (25+ minutes) Students should take turns reading from How to be Smart from the Inside Out (Smart) book in front of the class. This gives them the opportunity to practice reading in front of a group, sharpen their leadership skills and take ownership of the lesson. (15 minutes) Activity Sheets: (1) OWG Brain Teaser (page 9). Find all of the OWG characters in the word search. (2) Amazing – Help Peter Pancreas find his way to the healthy snacks (page 10).

Week Two: FOCUS - Meet Hardy Heart and Sir Rebrum (5 minutes) Take out OWGuy or OWGal and have kids name each of the characters. Pull out Hardy Heart and Sir Rebrum last since we’re going to focus on them today. Keep both of these characters displayed on the desk for the entire lesson. Review The OrganWise Guys Club Rules of low-fat, high-fiber, lots of water and exercise. (25 minutes) Meet Hardy Heart and Sir Rebrum: • Review the information from pages 16-19 of SMART about Hardy Heart. If you can find long, skinny balloons (usually available at a party store or in the party section of Wal-Mart/Target) have the kids blow them up to demonstrate what healthy arteries and veins look like. • Ask them: What happens if we eat high-fat foods all the time? Have a balloon that is partially deflated (obviously not healthy) to show the kids. • Make two columns on the board and have the kids list ideas for foods under each: Foods for Bad Cholesterol Foods for Good Cholesterol • Review the information about Sir Rebrum on page 6 of SMART. • Ask kids why your Sir Rebrum is so important …

Pull out The Kidney Brothers and Luigi Liver last since we’re going to focus on them today. Keep both of these characters displayed on the desk for the entire lesson. Review The OrganWise Guys Club Rules of low-fat, high-fiber, lots of water and exercise. (10 minutes) WISERCISE Are You OrganWise? (page 55) (25+ minutes) Meet Luigi Liver (review SMART p. 8) and Sid and Kid Kidney (review SMART pages 7, 26-27) and ask: • How much water do you think your Sid and Kid Kidney need every day to keep your water treatment center healthy?

Children need between 5 and 8 cups of water each day, according to a study led by researchers at Queens College of the City University of NY and published in the 10/2010 issue of the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition." But some children may be fine with less water, and children who are very active may need more. Your child may need more water during the day when it's hot outside or when sick or recovering from an illness.

• Bring a visual display to help kids grasp how much water is in 5-8 cups. Some suggested ideas:

Bring a clear pitcher and a measuring cup. Measure 8 cups in front of the class allowing them to count.

Have a 2-liter sized bottles or one of the large 64 ounce bottles for a good visual. • Brainstorm ways to drink more water every day:

Choose water instead of juice Get a drink at the water fountain every time you go by Drink a glass of water when you wake up in the morning

• Ask:

What happens if you don’t drink enough water? Define dehydration (more water is going out of your body than is coming in) Brainstorm times that it is easy to get dehydrated:

• Playing outside • When you’re sick • When it’s hot outside

• Share symptoms of dehydration: head ache, feeling really tired, dark, smelly urine, etc. If you really want to drive the message home, get some clear bottles and add different levels of yellow food coloring so it goes from light to dark to demonstrate what color their urine should be. • Serve each child an 8 oz cup of water while watching the OWG Shorts! (2 minutes) – OWG Shorts: Drink Your Water and/or What Do Kidneys Do? Send home the OWG water-tracking sheet (page 13) with children and challenge them to count how many glasses of water they drink this week

Review The OrganWise Guys Club Rules of low-fat, high-fiber, lots of water and exercise. (25+ minutes) Meet Peter Pancreas (review SMART page 10) and Peri Stolic (review SMART pages 9, 20-25) • Ask:

Why does Peri Stolic like rule #2 – High-Fiber? Bring in 2 tubes of toothpaste; one full and one almost completely empty

and 2 paper plates. Have 2 children demonstrate the difference between squeezing a full tube and a nearly empty tube of toothpaste.

• Ask:

Which tube of toothpaste do we want our Peri Stolic to be like? Brainstorm a list of foods that are good for Peri to stay nice and fluffy and

full. Have each child write down 5 of their favorite foods from that list and 1 new food that

they will try this week. You can also bring in some “Peri-friendly” snacks for the kids to try during this lesson

(sliced apples, orange wedges, carrot sticks, broccoli, etc.) or if your school has a garden, visit the garden and point out all the foods that Peri loves. Ask kids if they’ve tried those foods.

(10 Minutes) Print and distribute the fiber-rich foods and fruit and veggies weekly tracker activity sheets (pages 14 &15).

Why is it important to eat healthy foods for our Pepto? Food becomes energy for our bodies.

Brainstorm a list of foods that Pepto can use to make the most energy. • Have the students stand up and take 5 deep breaths to feel their “Windy” at work.

Brainstorm ways to keep Windy healthy (12 minutes) WISERCISE Windy’s Magical Garden (page 43) Before jumping into WISERCISE today, point out that our Calci’s and Madame Muscles need lots of exercise to stay strong. Exercise and fresh air = a strong body and healthy life! (20 minutes) Place the doll up front with all of the OWG characters lined up. Ask students to write a paragraph about their favorite OWG character and why it’s their favorite. (2 minutes) OWG Shorts (choose 2-4): Ode to Fresh Air, Keep Your Bones Moving, Keep Your Muscles Moving, and/or any of the Game Show Shorts

Week Six: FOCUS - Joining the Club (10 minutes) WISERCISE! Healthy and Proud (page 53) (5 minutes) Take out OWGuy or OWGal and have kids name each of the OWG characters. (5 minutes) Joining the Club Tell students that now it’s time for them to join the OWG club, but to join they first have to take the test. Here are the questions.

1. In order to eat healthy, you have to eat LOW-what? • Low-fat

2. To keep your Peri Stolic (hold up beanie) healthy, you have to eat a lot of HIGH what foods? • High Fiber

3. To keep your Sid and Kid Kidney (hold them up) healthy you need to drink plenty of what? • Water

4. To keep all the OWG healthy and strong, you have to make sure to get plenty of regular what? • Exercise

Tell the kids congratulations! The whole class is now an OWG Club member. (20 minutes+) Choose from one of the following Club activities:

• Have the kids create signs to decorate the OWG clubhouse. Make sure you include the characters and the rules in the signs.

• Divide the kids into groups and have them come up with a club chant, secret handshake and password.

• Divide the class into groups of 4-5 and have the kids write a skit or original OWG Short! about being a club member. Let them share it in front of the class. Script template available on pages 16 & 17.

• If possible, finish off your time with water and a healthy snack.
