I wanted a cheap way of making my LED TV a

smart TV. So I stuck a Raspberry Pi running

Raspbmc into it! This mod consists of sticking a

Raspberry Pi inside a Smart LED TV to give it

added functions. I am using the OS Raspbmc on a

model B RPi.

Revision 1: Posts 1-3 are of the first design that I

made. Posts 4 and up are of Revision 2 which has

an included usb-uirt mount with more of a home

automation approach.

The TV I am using is a 40 inch Hisense Smart LED

TV. This is the inside of it

The underside of the logic board



I will be taping into one of the 2 USB ports. It

outputs 5v 500 mA which is enough to power the

RPi and some low power USB peripherals



Soldered some wire and glued it down

Put some kapton tape (thanks to mp4dog)



Test powering it

The original speakers weren't that great. I used a

home theater speaker setup so I decided to

remove one of the onboard speakers and replace

it with a port output from the RPi

And I 3d printed my own face plate for the RPi

using Solidworks 2013 and my Up! plus 2 3d

printer

I wired a female RCA jack to the 3.5 mm audio

jack of the RPi so I could attach my home theater

speaker setup



Powers up fine

Revision 2: In Revision 1, I had the power wired

to the usb port of the TV. This is bad for the RPi

as when I turn off the TV, the RPi turns off also

improperly which can corrupt the data on my sd

card. I also wanted to use my RPi as a home

automation server using my x10 transceiver.

I took my multimeter and probed the logic board

for a constant 5v which I found two.

I desoldered the usb ports to wire in a usb-uirt

and usb x10 module









I cut a hole into the case of the usb-uirt



Then I superglued the usb-uirt case to a custom 3

printed faceplate



I then glued the RPi to the faceplate



I then glued everything to the back case of the

LED TV



The usb-uirt and usb x10 module soldered and

glued

I 3d printed a cover for the hdmi cable

dude that is sick. are using a the xbmc android

remote to connect to it and can you install the

plugins that way

It has a usb-uirt so you can control it with any ir

remote. But I use my android remote.

I just found out my TV has HDMI-CEC. I will be

removing the usb-uirt and replacing it with a usb

hub which I will 3d print a faceplate in the back.

Revision 3: Thanks to the people at Engadget, I

found out my TV and RPi has hdmi-cec. This

means I can get rid of my usb-uirt and replace it

with a usb hub.

I cut a hole for the usb hub
