Transcript of How my magazine challenges certain representations!

These magazines represent the stereotypical rapper and how they are represented on magazines. My magazines front covers reinforce some of the stereotypes however challenges many of them too. For instance these four magazines all reinforce the stereotype that rappers are covered in tattoos, to help reinforce the ideology that rappers live the rough lifestyle possibly growing up in the ghetto and being very tough. However, my model does not reinforce this stereotype as my model is not topless and is not covered in tattoos, in fact there are no tattoos at all on my model.Henceforward, another representation that typical magazine use to which my magazine front cover challenges, is how the models reinforce quite violent ideas, through hand gestures or props. By them using these types of props and hand gestures it reinforces the ideology and stereotype that rappers are very violent and are apart of the crime world. However my magazine does not reinforce this idea, as my model simply uses a hostile mode of address, however does not come across as a threat.

When it comes to contents pages or magazines in general, women are always sexualized extremely in order to use the male gaze theory. Therefore, woman usually have next to no clothes on and are posing in a seductive stance. However My magazine challenges this as my model is covered in clothes and is not doing a sexualized pose, my model represents a powerful woman who can still be beautiful without having to have no clothes on and be sexualized. Therefore that is how mu magazine challenges the stereotypical magazine.

My magazine also challenges the usual conventions of a typical hip hop magazine, as mine uses conventions like pull out quotes and secondary images. This is useful as it allows my reader to know more about what is going on within the magazine.

When it comes to double page spreads, my magazine abides by most of the conventional layout choices that a stereotypical magazine would use. However when it comes to the choice of images that I use my magazine in some ways challenges these ideas. In many Hip-Hop magazines some artists are presented in promoting a negative lifestyle, in the terms of crime, drug abuse etc. However my magazine does not reinforce this, my double page spread image, shows rappers in a positive way, as my artist is happy and is not promoting a negative lifestyle. Also again my artist does not promote the stereotype of rappers being covered in tattoos, and as we can see more skin of my artist this emphasises on how he does not have any tattoos like the usual rapper would.
