Ford Fleet Service News
Recently, a utility company
fleet manager asked me how
much fuel a diesel engine uses
while idling. He wanted to
calculate how much it costs to
keep a truck running all day.
It’s one thing to run a truck all
day if it relies on the PTO for
hydraulic pressure or power
generation. It’s a whole differ-
ent issue if it’s unnecessary.
Here are some rough calcula-
tions.
Diesel engines typically range
from around 6L to 7.5L dis-
placement. To keep the engine
running at idle in park or neu-
tral with no A/C on, they use
roughly 22.5 ounces of diesel
fuel per hour. If the A/C is
running, consumption in-
creases to about 62 oz./hr.
That’s because of the necessity
to maintain engine RPM when
the A/C compressor cycles.
These number don’t account
for the additional DPF regen-
erations required, especially
during cold weather.
If a driver is in the habit of
driving to the work site, then
letting the engine idle all day,
that adds up to 1.4 to 3.9 gal-
lons of fuel wasted per 8 hour

Q. Some companies market
a "Universal" coolant claim-
ing that their product can be
used for all vehicle applica-
tions. What is Ford's posi-
tion on the use of
"Universal" coolants in
Ford vehicles?
• Ford does not have perform-
ance data for the multitude of
engine coolants available in the
aftermarket and therefore can-
not recommend the use of any
coolant except those approved
by Ford Motor Company.
• Due to the complexity of
cooling systems, no one cool-
ant has been proven to work in
all vehicles.
• "Universal" coolants gener-
ally do not contain silicates and
nitrites, both of which are re-
quired for Ford vehicles
equipped with Motorcraft®
Premium Gold Engine Cool-
ant. Thus, these "universal"
coolants generally do not meet
Ford's coolant specification
WSS-M97B51-A1.
• Ford vehicles equipped with
Motorcraft® Premium Engine
Coolant, meeting Ford specifi-
cation ESE-M97B44-A, require
silicates and, in the case of
diesel engines, the use of Mo-
torcraft® Diesel Cooling Sys-
tem Additive, VC-8, which
contains nitrites. Thus, these
"universal" coolants may not
be suitable for use in vehicles
originally equipped with Mo-
torcraft Premium Engine Cool-
ant.
• Based on blind laboratory
ASTM testing performed in
dupl ic a te , two l ead ing
"universal" coolants currently
in the marketplace did not
meet the extended D2809 re-
quirements of Ford's Motor-
craft® Premium Gold Engine
Coolant specification, WSS-
M97B51-A1.
• The "universal" coolants
may not be compatible with

Due to stiff commercial tires used on 2008 - 2010 F-450 Pick Up, some customers may perceive a
wander feel on rutted/ rough roads. The condition my be worse with traction tires. Tire changes are
not recommended. First, compare to the same vehicle (F-450 PU only). The F-450 PU is based on
the F-450 chassis cab with significant ride improvements. Steering will be better than the F-450
chassis cab, but will not equal the steering of a F-350 DRW. If after comparing to another F-450
PU, and wander concern still exists, proceed with normal diagnostics per the workshop manual, sec-
tion 211-00: Steering System - General Information, diagnosis and testing.
EEPod LLC has developed a specialty tool for Ford Fleet customers to perform the manual diesel
particulate filter (DPF) regeneration. This might be required on vehicles that are not driven in condi-
tions that allow for the normal automatic regeneration to occur. The tool is a standard EEPod My-
CANIC Vehicle Interface with custom software. Simply plug the tool into the OBD/Diagnostic
connector and follow on-screen instructions to run the manual regeneration. Go to eepod.com for
more information and pricing.

Some 2002 - 2010 vehicles may display the indicated speed on the speedometer to be slightly higher
than actual speed. At an actual vehicle speed of 60 mph, the speedometer could indicate 58 to 64
mph. The indicated speed range is biased high to compensate for system tolerances and tire varia-
tion, but does not affect odometer accuracy. If the error exceeds these limits, check for configura-
tion errors within the module that processes the VSS (I.E. tire size and axle ratio in the PCM mem-
ory), or incorrect tire size on the vehicle (I.E. wheels/ tires changed).
Multiple Vehicles - Speedometer Accuracy - Service Tip
If you encounter a 2009 - 2010 F650 - F750 with a loose exterior door handle, it is not necessary to
replace the door handle assembly. Inspect the pivot pin that keeps the door handle in place for
proper seating/ position. Remove the handle assembly and insure the pin head is inserted past the
triangle retention bumps. If necessary, fully seat the pivot pin so the pin head rests on the bezel hard
stop. Cycle the handle to ensure proper operation prior to reinstallation. Refer to WSM Section
501-14.

shift, depending on weather.
Assuming four months cold weather and eight months moderate to hot weather, up to 767 gals per year could easily be burned unneces-
sarily. At today's US average price of $2.98/gal, that's $2,286. Every 10 cents price increase adds $76.70. Now, add the additional mainte-
nance required. 2,000 hrs of unnecessary idle time adds 10 extra oil/filter changes and 5 extra fuel filter changes to the mix (or a couple
of $15,000 to $20,000 engine replacements in the fleet due to inadequate maintenance). Remember, 1 hr. engine running time is equiva-
lent to 25 road miles.
The charts above are from the Department of Energy at http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/oog/info/gdu/gasdiesel.asp (or Google
“average fuel price”)
Beginning in 2008, CARB requires certain diesel equipped vehicles to shut down after 5 minutes of idling. Vehicles with California emis-
sions are programmed to comply and will shut down as required. 2008 and later diesel equipped Super Duty vehicles without idle shut-
down can have the feature enabled by following the instructions in Ford QVM Bulletin Q-169-R4. The bulletin is available at https://
www.fleet.ford.com/truckbbas/non-html/Q169R4.pdf . Engine idle shutdown is not necessary on 2011 6.7L diesel engine vehicles
since they pass CARB’s emissions requirements. Engine idle shutdown is not available or programmable on gasoline equipped vehicles or
models before 2007.

FUEL
Ford's recommended supplemental coolant
additive, Motorcraft® Diesel Cooling Sys-
tem Additive, VC-8.
• Use of non-approved "universal" coolants
may lead to eventual engine damage or fail-
ure. Problems caused by use of non-
approved "universal" coolant may not arise
immediately, but may occur over longer
periods of time due to additive compatibility
issues.
• Although the Ford New Vehicle Limited
Warranty is not automatically voided upon
the use of a non-approved coolant in Ford
vehicles, if such use results in damage to the
vehicle or its components, the cost of repair-
ing the damage (and related damage) would
not be covered by the Ford New Vehicle
Limited Warranty.
Q. What may be some of the conse-
quences of using the wrong coolant?
• Reduced corrosion protection of cooling
system components
• Incompatibility with engine gasket materi-
als
• Corrosive attack of aluminum compo-
nents
• Cylinder wall cavitation and engine block
damage in diesel engines
• Potential water pump issues
Q. What are the primary coolant types
Ford recommends for use in its vehicles?
• Yellow-colored Motorcraft® Premium
Gold Engine Coolant, meeting Ford specifi-
cation WSS-M97B51-A1
• Green-colored Motorcraft® Premium
Engine Coolant, meeting Ford specification
ESE-M97B44-A
• Orange-colored Motorcraft® Specialty
Orange Engine Coolant, meeting Ford
specification WSS-M97B44-D
• Reference the Service Coolant Usage
Chart for specific vehicle usage information
Q. What are the requirements with re-
gard to using coolant containing a taste
adversant (bittering agent)?
• Currently certain states and localities re-
quire that coolant contain a taste adversant
(bittering agent).
• Since additional states and localities are
considering adopting the same or similar
requirements, and in order to reduce com-
plexity and confusion, Ford will soon dis-
tribute only bittered coolant in the entire
U.S.
Q. What are the advantages of
"extended-life" Motorcraft® Premium
Gold Engine Coolant versus a conven-
tional coolant such as Motorcraft® Pre-
mium Engine Coolant?
• Extended drain (change-out) intervals
• No need for supplemental coolant addi-
tives required for diesel engines (except in
the case of the Caterpillar 3126E engine)
Q. What is the interchangeability of Mo-
torcraft® Premium Engine Coolant and
Motorcraft® Premium Gold Engine
Coolant? Can Motorcraft® Premium
Engine Coolant be used to top off a vehi-
cle equipped with Motorcraft Premium
Gold Engine Coolant? Can Motorcraft®
Premium Gold Engine Coolant be used
in vehicles equipped with Motorcraft®
Premium Engine Coolant?
• Ford does not recommend mixing cool-
ants. Green-colored Motorcraft® Premium
Engine Coolant should not be used in vehi-
cles except those originally equipped with it.
• However, based on the results of back-
ward compatibility testing, certain vehicles
originally equipped with Motorcraft® Pre-
mium Engine Coolant (reference the Service
Coolant Usage Chart for specific vehicle
usage) can be serviced using the yellow-
colored Motorcraft® Premium Gold Engine
Coolant as long as the following conditions
are met:
1. If the green-colored engine coolant is
thoroughly flushed out of the cooling
system and then the system is filledwith
yellow-colored engine coolant, the ser-
vice maintenance (change-out) intervals
of the yellow-colored engine coolant
can be followed.
2. If the green-colored engine coolant is
not completely flushed out of the cool-
ing system (e.g., yellow-colored engine
coolant is used to top off the system),
then the service maintenance (change-
out) intervals of the greencolored en-
gine coolant must be followed.
3. All pre-1999 vehicles, as well as all
model years of Mercury Villager, must
be serviced with the green-colored en-
gine coolant.

Fleet Service Notification Program
(FSNP) - FSNP is a process for fleets to
e l e c t r o n i c a l l y t r a n sm i t v e h i c l e
owner/operator information to Ford Motor
Company. This information is important to
identify a vehicle's Owner of Record to sup-
port Field Service Actions such as Recalls
Owner Notification Programs and other
special programs. Once the fleet provides
Ford with the data, personnel designated by
the Fleet Company will have password pro-
tected access to lthe information. To get
access, log onto www.fleet.ford.com. Click
on the “Maintenance” tab, select “Recalls”,
then select Fleet Service Notification Pro-
gram. An email link is provided there.
This information should be used for man-
agement of Field Service Actions on fleet
vehicles. The VIN Lists are updated nightly
based on claims that were received by Ford
that occurred the previous day. The VIN
lists for affected fleets will typically be avail-
able within 48 hours after the FSA is
launched. FSAs listed on the site remain
available until the FSA expires or up to two
year. To view the FSAs that are maintained
in the FSA VIN List database go to the
available FSAs. The VIN Lists section pro-
vides links to FSAs where the fleet has at
least one involved unit that requires service
work. If you do not have any involved units
for the FSA it will not appear in the list. To
view the FSA bulletin click on the FSA
number on the VIN List page.
