How Games Are Assigned
• What criteria is used• What criteria is NOT used
OrWhy don’t I get the games I want and why does someone else get
them?
Real Assigning Criteria• What criteria is used• Types of Assigning:–Regular Assigning–Open Games Assigning–Special Events Assigning
Common Criteria• TEAMS COME FIRST• Availability• Registration level• Meeting attendance• Restrictions from teams/partners• How tough the game is expected to
be—and might be
More Common Criteria• Exposure to teams• How many games an official has in
a day, in a row, overall• Travel to/from other games• Mentoring situations - for both new
officials and for experienced officials as mentors
Skills Criteria• Skating ability• Awareness• Judgment• Rule knowledge• Attitude• Reputation• Consistency• Dependability
How Are Skills Evaluated?• Evaluations– You never know who is in the
building– I go out and watch officials—not
always announced– I get feedback from senior officials,
partners, coaches, parents• How to get evaluated
Regular Assigning• Availability for date, time, location• Try to get as many games filled as
possible with at least two officials• I track if an official submitted
availability and I was not able to assign them
• I also look for mentoring situations
Open Games Assigning• Try to prevent canceled games• Balance out Open Games• Was official available?• I look for mentoring situations
Special Events Assigning• Done by Committee• Availability for date, time, location• We try to look at how many games
each official gets• We try to identify where officials
have not gotten enough games
That’s How It Is Done• I think that we have a process that is
very fair• You may not agree• Always looking for new ideas—that
are fair• Feel free to ask me about why you
don’t get assignments—but be prepared for brutal honesty i.e. you may not like what you hear
DCHOA Presentation• Test screen resolution–Level 2 • Level 3
