Mammals

Sea CowsManatees and dugongs are the cows of the sea. Most dugongs live in warm, coastal waters off Northern and Western Australia. Manatees live in the coastal waters of the Atlantic Ocean, from the southeast coast of North America to Central and West Africa.

Dugongs and manatees eat sea grass. Manatees are slightly larger than dugongs. West African manatees can grow to four metres long and weigh up to 600 kilograms.

Sea cows are endangered. People used to hunt sea cows. Today, their habitat is being destroyed. Sea cows get caught in fishing nets and run over by boats.

Dugongs have a fluked tail like a whale.

Manatees can eat up to 80 kilograms of plants every day.

What is Architecture?Architecture is the art and science of designing buildings. It controls the mass, volume, texture and materials of built environments. Architecture is also about how buildings work, such as if they stay cool in summer.

Architecture changes with time. People need new types of buildings as the way they live changes. Their tastes changes, and new building materials emerge.

Architects design buildings. They understand how people use spaces. Architects balance what people need and how a building affects the environment. They try to design buildings that are beautiful but also useful.

MovementAn object remains still unless a forceacts on it. The force must be stronger than the object’sinertia to make the object move. Inertia is howhard it is to move something. The object resistsmovement and has a tendency to remain still.

Anything with mass has inertia. The more masssomething has, the more inertia it has. This is whyit takes a stronger force to move a bowling ballthan a tennis ball.

Once something is moving, it moves in the samedirection as the force that caused it to move. It willonly change direction if another force acts on it.

Anything that is moving hasmomentum. Momentumdepends on the mass of anobject and how fast it ismoving. Its momentumequals the force you needto stop it moving.

The batter hits a ball, which movesin the same direction as the forcefrom the bat.

ResearchThere are over 80 research stations in Antarctica.Glaciologists study ice and where it moves. They drill out pieces of ice called ice cores. Dust and chemicals, trapped in the ice, show that pollution has increased over the last 200 years. Pollution can lead to global warming. If temperatures increase, melting ice will increase sea levels. This threatens animals that hunt and breed on the Antarctic ice.

Meteorologists study weather patterns, clouds, wind speeds and temperatures. This information helps them to predict the weather.

Biologists study plants and animals that live both on and under the ice. They track where and when these animals travel.

Astronomers study the planets and stars in space. Antarctica is dust-free, dry and very dark, which makes it an ideal place for studying space. Astronomers also study the Earth’s atmosphere, such as the Aurora Australis.

Scientists send remote-control video cameras through the sea ice to study marine life.

The oldest Antarctic ice core ever drilled contained snow and soil from 740 000 years ago. The ice core was three kilometres long.

Water is hard to find in a dry habitat.Birds and large mammals, such as pronghorn antelopes, travel long distances to find water.

Other animals get water from the food they eat. The bilby and the kangaroo rat get water from insects, fruit, seeds and leaves.

What is Architecture?Architecture is the art and science of designing buildings. It controls the mass, volume, texture and materials of built environments. Architecture is also about how buildings work, such as if they stay cool in summer.

The stage can be in differentpositions in a theatre.A proscenium stage is where the audiencesits in rows in front of the stage. Actorsmove on and off the stage through thewings. The sides and back of the stage arehidden from the audience.

A thrust stage is like a proscenium stage, except a part of the stage juts out into theaudience.

For theatre in the round, the stage is in themiddle of the theatre. The audience sitsaround it. This makes the audience veryclose to the action on the stage.

Flying and aviation began in 1903. Orville and Wilbur Wright flew an engine-powered plane for 37 metres before landing. This was the first sustained flight. Public air travel was still a long way away.
