WHAT IS AGILE
Let’s start with: What is Agile?
• Maybe you heard about Deloitte
• According to Wikipedia it is one of the "Big Four" accounting organizations and the largest professional services network in the world by revenue and number of professionals.
• In 2018, the network earned a record $43.2 billion USD in aggregate revenues.

In English, “agile” means "ability to move quickly and easily" and also
"thinking quickly and in an intelligent way".

AGILE VALUES – WITH A TWIST
Individuals and interactions over processes and tools
Useful results Working software over comprehensive
documentation
Customer collaboration over contract negotiation
Responding to change over following a plan

AGILE VALUES – WITH A TWIST
•Our highest priority is to
satisfy the customer
through early and
continuous delivery of
useful results.
•Welcome changing
requirements, even late in
development. Agile processes
harness change for the
customer's competitive
advantage.
•Deliver useful results
frequently, from a couple of
weeks to a couple of
months, with a preference
to the shorter timescale.
•Business people and the
team must work together
daily throughout the
project.
•Build projects around
motivated individuals. Give
them the environment and
support they need, and
trust them to get the job
done.
•The most efficient and
effective method of
conveying information to
and within the team is face-
to-face conversation.
•Useful results are the
primary measure of
progress.
•Agile processes promote
sustainable development.
The sponsors, the team,
and users should be able to
maintain a constant pace
indefinitely.
•Continuous attention to
technical excellence and
good design enhances
agility.
•Simplicity--the art of
maximizing the amount of
work not done--is essential.
•The best architectures,
requirements, and designs
emerge from self-
organizing teams.
•At regular intervals, the
team reflects on how to
become more effective,
then tunes and adjusts its
behavior accordingly.

Why Agile? Does it work?
20© 2019 Pentalog. Presented at Jax London, on October 8th 2019 2020
• Reduces Cost – clients get what they want, feedback is almost in real-
time
• Reduces Risk – by means of transparency and communication (events)
• Allows Flexibility and Innovation – welcome changing requirements
• Reduces Waste – earlier spotted, easier to eliminate, no piles of useless
doc
• Get Better ROI – short delivery cycle means quick time to market
• Increases Productivity - focus on high valued, high priority features and
the most efficient way to produce them
• Improves Morale – more individual autonomy, fosters trust, self
confidence, less decision flows
• Improved Quality – QA is done faster, more often, ensuring continuous
improvement at every stage
• Happier Customers - misunderstandings quickly clarified, problems and
issues identified and tackled earlier

How can we be Agile?
24© 2019 Pentalog. Presented at Jax London, on October 8th 2019 2424
• Being here (being interested)
• Opening your mind to think without constraints
• Knew already (or just learned) about the Agile Manifesto
• Ok, now what? Remember that image:
HOW CAN WE BE AGILE? HOW DO WE MAKE THIS WORK?
You already did the first steps:

• They all follow an iterative approach for software development
HOW CAN WE BE AGILE?
What do Agile frameworks have in common?
26© 2019 Pentalog. Presented at Jax London, on October 8th 2019 2626
HOW CAN WE BE AGILE?
Step 1 – Start iterating
27© 2019 Pentalog. Presented at Jax London, on October 8th 2019 2727
HOW CAN WE BE AGILE?
Step 2 – Keep your priorities under control
28© 2019 Pentalog. Presented at Jax London, on October 8th 2019 2828
HOW CAN WE BE AGILE?
How do we decide what is important?

HOW CAN WE BE AGILE?
Step 3 – Be happy ☺
Be happy while doing everything you do ☺
If you do:
• Only what matters
• On time
• On budget (time and money)
• And give it time and patience to happen…
Will you be happier?

HOW CAN WE BE AGILE?
People usually ask:
• How can we motivate our workers, our teams?
• How can we change the organization's culture?
• How can we change the mindset of managers?
• How can we get teams to take responsibility?
• How can we improve teamwork and collaboration?
• How can we get managers to trust their teams?
• How can we develop people's competencies?
• How can we be agile when the organization is not?
All these questions, except the last one, are asking, “How can we change other people?”
35© 2019 Pentalog. Presented at Jax London, on October 8th 2019 3535
HOW CAN WE BE AGILE?
Change yourself, not others!
• When everyone is trying to manipulate everyone else, should we be surprised that problems never go away and that new ones keep popping up?
• When people don't focus on improving themselves, is it any wonder they're always complaining about each other?
“Don’t worry, be happy!”
36© 2019 Pentalog. Presented at Jax London, on October 8th 2019 3636
HOW CAN WE BE AGILE? WHAT MORE?
• If you work with Scrum at work, try to do the same at home (plan your sprints, do your retrospectives)
• Try to adapt the same routine/iteration/cycle in both of your worlds to make it ONE
• It’s easier to follow the same rules the whole day, rather than changing in between
• It will make your day feel as a whole, making it a holistic way of handling your tasks
Step 4 – Be Agile everywhere!
37© 2019 Pentalog. Presented at Jax London, on October 8th 2019 3737
HOW CAN WE BE AGILE?
With these new eyes look back at how you work
38© 2019 Pentalog. Presented at Jax London, on October 8th 2019 3838
HOW CAN WE BE AGILE?
Step 5 - Repeat all of the previous steps ☺
39© 2019 Pentalog. Presented at Jax London, on October 8th 2019 3939
HOW CAN WE BE AGILE?
Give it time and patience!

HOW CAN WE BE AGILE?
Putting it all together

HOW CAN WE BE AGILE?
SUMMARY
• Think outside the box about Agile (rethink the Agile manifesto)
• Start your routine / cycle / habit, look back and improve it (even change it)
• Adapt your method to match work and home
• Get a "holistic" view of life (work + personal = life)
• Look back on how you work from this new perspective
• Be happy while you do anything you do
• Enjoy life, enjoy work, enjoy being Agile!
• Continue!

THEY DID IT - HERE'S HOW
Jonathan Hausmann, MD
• ‘I realized that Agile methodology has the potential to revolutionize patient care, as it has software development’
• When I see a new patient in clinic with rheumatoid arthritis, for example, I create a quick outline of how I envision her treatment
• At every clinic visit (aka “sprint”), I obtain feedback from my patient about how she is doing, and adjust the treatment plan accordingly
• Because of the uncertainty inherent to the practice of medicine, these short feedback loops help me better care for and respond to my patient’s needs.

Michael Milnes, Lawyer
• He is the Head of Commercial and Competition Law, Practical Law, Thomson Reuters Legal Australia
• For lawyers working on complex projects, such as mergers and acquisition transactions or large-scale litigation, adopting this project management framework may be a way to improve flexibility, client responsiveness and reduce wasted work.
• Talking to lawyers from across the market, there are already several case studies of legal teams successfully basing their workflow around Agile principles and reaping the benefits.

SprintZero - Agile Marketing Manifesto
• “While we made some important decisions at SprintZero, this is a work in progress.
• We will apply our own process to publish this manifesto, measure the results, learn from the feedback, and adapt and iterate.”

HOW CAN WE BE AGILE?
To Conclude
• Who can be Agile? – Anyone
• How can we be Agile? – Iterate (Plan, Do, Check, Adapt, Repeat)
• Could a Doctor, a Lawyer or a Chef be Agile? – Many of them ALREADY ARE!
• Can it help reach new goals, new heights? – That’s why Agile is so famous
• Will it make us happier? – You get to enjoy what and how you do it
• ( “Success is getting what you desire. Happiness is about enjoying what you already have.” )
• Does Agility on a personal level help us in Software Development? ☺
