A collection of computers and other equipment organized to share data, information, hardware, and software.

Also called a communications network.

LAN (Local Area Network)—a network that connects computers in a limited geographic area› school computer lab› business office› group of adjacent buildings

WAN (Wide Area Network)—a network that covers a large geographical area› the district offices of a statewide school system› the offices of a national corporation

Internet—The world’s largest network› A worldwide collection of networks› Links together millions of businesses, governments,

educational institutions, and individuals. › Open doors to learning!

World Wide Web (WWW)—A portion of the Internet that consists of computer sites that contain billions of electronic documents called Web pages. › Access to Web pages is through a web browser,

such as Internet Explorer, Netscape, or Firefox.

Example: Apple Elementary School has 10 classrooms. In each classroom, there are 3 computers and a printer connected to the school’s local area network.
