Decking detailsEveryone agreed that they liked the
footprint of the existing deck, but it
was not in great shape, and didnt
match the home very well, so a new
deck was installed using Ipe hardwood.
Dangelo suggested under-mounting
all the decking screws for a complete-
ly seamless look. White deck railing
brought the design together, and a
pergola was added, along with outdoor
fans and lighting to define the space. A
relaxing Jacuzzi was the finishing touch
for this phase.
The homeowner says she was elated
with the finished result because it was
very important to her to create defin-
ing areas within the space. It allows
you to enjoy the space wherever you
are, she says. We can enjoy drinks on
the little cozy couch under the pergola
and it doesnt feel too big. However,
the space also allows enough room for
the family to host large events. Weve
hosted a wedding with 150 people here,
and because the space is designed so
you can have your privacy, but also able
to accommodate a large group, it was
perfect.
5The bar is a good example of an inti-mate space where people can gather dur-
ing a get-together, yet not be far from theaction in the other areas.

Patio is
Picture PerfectOutdoor entertaining area shines in Central Ohio
BY JENNIFER L. K. ATKINS | PHOTOS BY RANDY FATH
Sam has an amazing viewfrom the back of his house
a picturesque pastoral
scene with the Ohio hills
rolling on into the distance.
It seems appropriate that
he has created an equal-
ly dramatic outdoor living
space against that back-drop. We wanted a place
where we could entertain
guests, where the kids
would bring friends over,
basically social outdoor liv-
ing, explained Sam.
Jason Chupp of Grandview Land-
scaping created a series of retainingwalls that cascade down from bothsides of the house to wrap aroundthe patio, using Unilock concrete pav-ers to replicate the feeling of stone. Abold contrasting line of accent paversruns across the top of the antique-tex-tured walls. This is a recurring themethroughout the design, including thecustom bar topped with granite builtbeneath the porch. Four bar-heightswivel chairs are a modern take on
a classic Adirondack design, featur-ing wide slats rounded at the top andSailcloth Shell cushions for comfort.
Keim Concrete customized all ofthe stamped concrete for the project, using four different patterns, but relat-ed colors to tie together the variousspaces while also making them dis-tinct. Beneath the porch, the concreteresembles seamless brown Travertinestone. Rich in texture, the concretefor the main patio was stamped to
replicate the random shapes and sizesof Arizona Flagstone and then hand-stained in field colors.

Grandview Landscaping installedone of their signature water featuresto meander along the right side of thehouse. Bound by field stones, the waterruns to a pleasing waterfall, tumblingonto more natural rock. The water isthen pumped back to the top, creatinga pool-less fountain eliminating themaintenance hassle of standing water.
The 16x16 Victoria pavilion thatshelters the custom fireplace was strate-gically placed right next to the waterfall. The whole combination of water andfire together is soothing, says Sam. Theclassic roof is supported by four col-umns made of wood wrapped in whitevinyl. I really wanted the structure tobe maintenance free, explained Sam.
Constructed from the same replicastone as the walls, the fireplace takesup the black line motif repeating it toaccent the textured hearth and mantel.Convenient nooks keep wood dry andat hand. Grandview also created a sim-ple yet striking black square above thehearth, mirroring the deep cushionedClassic Terrace seating in black around
the fireplace. It looks like nice livingroom furniture, but its made fromrecycled milk jugs. It wont fade; andcan be left outside all year, explainedSam. Looking for a green option, hepurchased everything from BerlinGardens line of poly lumber furniture. The chairs are upholstered in a black, white and beige stripe pattern. TheseFoster Classic Stripes are repeated inthe throw cushions on the SailclothShell cushions of the sofa, interspersedwith others in Canvas Heather Beige.
Also made from poly lumber, thedining set to the right of the pavilioncan also weather Ohios severe winters.Four side chairs are paired with twoswivel rocker chairs at the head andfoot of the rectangular dining table.Picking up the black line motif, thedining pieces are grey with contrastingblack accents and Foster Classic stripedcushions. Set against the nearby wall, ablack buffet table makes serving easy.
We love the color, the construc-tioneverything! It turned out evenbetter than we could have expected, smiled Sam.
