Home Theater Basics People today go to the movie theater for the impact and emotional involvement they get at the movie theater. AVDG takes into consideration the most important aspects of a home theater from the room acoustics to the sound system to the video. The sound system provides 50% of the emotional impact of a movie. AVDG has designed sound systems for the family room to large home theaters. For a lot of us, Home Theater became more of a reality with the advent of HI-FI VCR tapes. What VCR tapes lacked is a high quality picture. DVD’s have changed that. With the introduction of HD and Digital Audio we can provide an almost reference quality product to bring more of the visual and audio experience and emotion to the home theater. You can avoid the crowds and the sticky floors by having AVDG install a theater for you.
Whole House Audio A lot of people do not realize how much a whole house sound system can add to their home. It literally adds another atmosphere to the environment. Whole house systems have evolved to a point that one system can power a whole house, and play different sources in different rooms all off the same system. If your kids want to play satellite radio or ipod in one room and you want to hear Mozart off of a CD in another room, you can do that all off of one system. If you decide to play something different in the room you are in, all you have to do is push a button on a remote or any in-wall touchscreen to change the source or raise or lower the volume.
Security SystemsOur staff of professional installers are also able to provide you with the safety and peace of mind that only a monitored home security system complete with smoke detection can bring. Pre-wired and installed in your new home, or retrofit into your existing home, your new system will be easy and convenient to use from anywhere in the world.
The Green Home Going “Green” is the up and coming way to save you hundreds of dollars a year in lighting costs by controlling unused areas and dimming lights to levels that will save you money. Saving money is the key no matter what state the economy is in.
A light dimmed at 25% will provide 20% energy savings. A light dimmed at 50% is perceived as being on at 70.7%. AVDG can save you hundreds of dollars every year just by adding Lutron dimmers with a lighting system. AVDG is the only Audio Video Dealer certified by Lutron in the Dayton Area. With this savings, you may be able to add that new home theater.
Commercial InstallationAVDG can also serve your commercial needs. As the areas premier installation company we are capable of handling the largest of commercial needs. We are experienced in the largest of commercial projects including networking and distributed audio and video systems to phone and security.
Audio video design group is one of the oldest and most experienced Audio Video Dealers in southern Ohio. Opening in 1984 and operated by Lee Howell since the mid 80’s, Lee has grown AVDG into one of the finest Audio Video installation companies in southern Ohio. In 1992, AVDG became one of the top 10 THX dealers in the United States. By 1995, AVDG was the largest Molex Smart House dealerin the United States. Today we have continued in the same fashion providing Home Theater, and Automation systems for sports stars to anyone who wants a system that does not look or sound like they bought it at a big box store. If there is one thing I’ve learned about interior design, it is that there is a reason for everything. John was one of the more than 40 interior designers and landscapers to show off their talents at this year’s Designers’ Show House presented by the Dayton Philharmonic Volunteer Association. The extraordinary attention to detail seen throughout the house proves that every piece of furniture, paint color, and acces-sory has a purpose.
The Miami Valley is known for its more traditional and transitional homes, so when we came across a Mediterranean villa in Oakwood, which coincidentally is right around the corner from the site of the Designers’ Show House, we couldn’t resist taking a peek inside. Not only is the house unique in design, it holds a lot of history for its family.
This issue offers a sampling of the work from some of the best interior designers in the Miami Valley. We hope that you see something in this issue that sparks the start of your next home renovation project. Should you need any help or advice, please give the businesses within this magazine a call! Don’t forget to check out Housetrends.com for even more home and garden projects and resources. Please feel free to shoot me an email with any questions or editorial projects we should know about.
Sincerely,
Evelyn Yaus and the Housetrends staff

You can travel around the world, but there’s really no place
like home. F Perhaps that is why when one Dayton home
owner finally built the house of her dreams she went to great
lengths to make sure a little piece of home was imbedded
into it. F The home—10,000 square feet of grandeur nes
tled in the heart of Oakwood’s west side—was designed
after the homeowner’s love for Mediterranean style and
European design. She picked up the taste as a child, when
she traveled frequently overseas, following wherever
her dad’s executive career would lead. F But
while it was her childhood journeys that
shaped how the house was designed
and built, it was her family ties that
provided the detail that would
turn the estate into a home.

Crafted into the home’s 10-foot ceilings are 200-year-old beams that were originally part of her grandfather’s farm in Indiana. “Because she moved around a lot she wanted something in her home that had some meaning,” says Lori Sowder, the inte-rior designer who helped bring the home owner’s dream to life from conception.
The farm where the beams were harvested was a place where the homeowner would spend summer after summer playing as a child. Great care was put into getting the beams and making them ready for the new home. An Amish carpenter was hired to take down each beam and split them by hand and then stain them for the new home.
The hard work was worth it and the result is amazing. The heavy oak beams create a thread throughout the home’s first floor, adding the needed warm touch among the authentic plaster walls, imported ceramic flooring and wrought iron pieces.
Beyond the beams, however, one sees a home meticulously and carefully planned. Each detail—fabric fibers to one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture—flows into a harmonious picture that comes to life in European flavor.
Setting the stageThe home’s architecture is definitely not like the rest in its neigh-borhood. Even the next door estate, from which the land was sold to build the new home, fits the early 1900s home built in the era of the Wright Brothers.
But this home introduces a new flavor into the Oakwood com-munity. Its curves and arches are first seen from the road and are carried from that point forward to its porch, through its front door and all the way throughout every room.
The front of the house is one of the primary outdoor living spaces since it faces the Dayton Country Club’s ninth tee. It also stays true to Mediterranean culture where features such as foun-tains are often placed in the front of the home. One of the home-owner’s favorite details is the loggia which boasts handcrafted pillars, each carved from a singular piece of limestone.

The home’s circular foyer creates a dramatic entryway. Nearly everything in the space was designed and handcrafted to fit the unique shape. The homeowner worked closely with the designer to pick out the front door’s wood, window and even hardware. The entry’s flooring is what grabs the attention of visitors first. Custom made ceramic tile—shipped in seven different pieces from overseas—creates a true compass rose. The floor’s mosaic design includes nearly all the warm colors—gold, reds, browns and greens—that are carried throughout the home in fabrics and paintings.
European eateryThe homeowner’s favorite part of her home is her kitchen. It’s the place where she spends a lot of her time entertaining or taking
care of the everyday needs of her three children.Still, it’s no ordinary kitchen. Like the rest of the home,
careful design has taken a room that is normally known for its function and made it known for its
beauty. In fact, functionality isn’t really some-thing that is visible to the ordinary eye.

Except for the stove top, every other appliance is carefully hidden behind handcrafted doors that look more like armoires than mass-manufactured façades. The two hidden refrigerators are easily opened, however, by the hand-carved handles. The kitchen’s backsplash is a focal point because its mosaic marble design provides the color needed to connect the room with the adjoining living room and breakfast nook.
The large light fixture hanging above the island is one of many throughout the home that were created in California and shipped into Dayton. The fixtures not only stay true to the Mediterranean use of iron, but also provide the right scale needed to fit the extraordinary high ceilings throughout the home.
A place of solitudeThe first floor offers a multitude of living spaces—including a living room, kitchen, breakfast nook, half bath, mudroom, laun-dry room and coat closet—but nothing is more beloved than the library. The room was designed quite different from the rest of the first floor where cream floors and walls lay a basic backdrop off which vibrant colors can easily pop.

The library, on the contrary, is a dark, rich setting that beckons the homeowners to break away from the hustle and bustle of normal life and all of its technological conveniences. The homeowner designed it that way and specifically wanted a space where the family could gather to read books, play games or just talk without having to worry about a television set blaring in the background.
The library’s walls are decorated with poplar wood and its detail is handcrafted as well as nearly all the furniture that is placed inside it. The room’s rich fabrics include cut velvet and embossed leather. A large wood burning fireplace—equipped with one-of-a-kind hand forged screens and tools - makes it the perfect getaway on the cold winter nights.
The room’s floor breaks the norm seen throughout the rest of the first floor. Dark wood, which matches that used on the walls, was inlaid among the slate to cre-ate a warmer feeling. It was a detail Lori suggested and the homeowner absolutely loved.
The home was a designer’s dream, Lori says. Not only did she get to work from a blank canvas, but also had the opportu-nity to do everything from scratch includ-ing all the furniture that was chosen to fill the home.
“A designer can only be as good as a homeowner will let them and (the home-owner) was extremely open to my ideas,” Lori says. “She had an opinion of what she wanted and impeccable taste. It made for a great relationship and a beautiful result in the end.”

and/or their guests. This area can be used for additional seating when entertaining.
Descend three steps from the pool area and you will find a paved area with a natural stone fire pit and custom Brazilian hardwood seating. This space is perfect for entertaining guests or making s’mores with the kids.
Big group plantings throughout the space pro-vide lots of color with minimal maintenance for this on the go family. Rose gardens are located on either side of the patio in the lawn areas as well as in the bed near the house in the pool area. Herbs are planted near the house where they may be easily maintained. An area by the porch is dedicated to herbs on the edge of an ornamental bed so they blend seamlessly into the landscaping. The herbs are separated, how-ever, by stone that matches the limestone out-croppings throughout the project to help keep the homeowner’s herbs in their place.
The overall goal of the client has been achieved with this design: An area perfect for entertaining requiring little maintenance. The beauty, func-tionality and seamless transition from indoors to out make this the ultimate in outdoor living.

Harmony in Design2009 Designers’ Show House strikes a colorful chord
By Christina Kleiner Photos by Jim Crotty
InterIor desIgn can be Interpreted In many dIfferent ways by dIf-
ferent people. like art, great interior design speaks to you. It invokes an emotion
that at times can touch your soul. the 2009 designers’ show House is not an exception.
the show House is the dayton philharmonic Volunteer association’s largest fundraiser.
funds raised during the biennial show, which was held in may, help support music educa-
tion programs in the miami Valley and the dayton philharmonic orchestra. F this year
over 7,000 people toured the 15,000-square-foot french eclectic home in oakwood,
where more than 40 area interior designers and landscapers showcased their talents.
designed in 1928, the house has transferred hands several times, until 2007, when it
was purchased by Kevin and tiffany chambers. the home was in great disrepair, but
instead of tearing it down, the chambers offered the home to the dpVa as the site of
this year’s show House. F one of the big standouts this year was the use of paint col-
ors. the chambers selected a palette of sherwin-williams paint colors for the designers
to choose from. the end result is a seamless home that brings to life the grandeur of the
1920s with a touch of modern influences that flow perfectly from room to room.

Living roomCal Weigold and Kent ShaW, CloSSon’SCal Weigold and Kent Shaw, Senior Interior Designers with Closson’s, successfully created three separate areas within the large living room. By strategically placing three different area rugs, they were able to create a natural division between the seat-ing, entertaining and music areas. The room’s elegant furnishings perfectly complement the architectural design of the space as well as the soft teal-colored walls.

The library offers a masculine feel, with dark wood bookcases and molding, taupe-colored walls and a black fireplace.
To brighten up the space’s dark detailing, the designers used off-white linen fabric for the uphol-stery and window treatments. A light colored sisal rug pops against the dark hardwood floor. The metallic gold silk and lurex pillows, greenery and a contemporary painting over the fireplace add bright splashes of color.

KitchenJim France, Vues, LLcJim France’s goal for the kitchen was to create a light and open space with clean lines and modern touches that complement the history of the house. The mixture of light and dark cabinetry, paired up with the bank of windows and pale gray-green walls works perfectly in the space. Interesting details such as the large furniture piece that houses the refrigerator and freezer and the sliding panels of marble which conceal spices and oils behind the range pick up the modern elements.

Dining roomJohn P. Stuart, J. Stuart Parker InterIorS“A different chair for a different personality” is how John P. Stuart explains his decision to surround the dining table with a variety of chairs. Stuart says his goal was to create a decadent dining room with a dramatic touch worthy of the classic vintage home. Dark taupe walls and the white fireplace and trim set the tone for the formal space.
Covered terraceDIane konIckI, Dk InterIorS, LLcThe romantic notions of Paris, France served as the inspiration behind Diane Konicki’s vision for the upper terrace. Accessible via French doors off the dining room and living room, Konicki’s goal was to make the porch feel like it was part of the home, a place where the homeowners would want to stay and relax. It’s not hard to imagine sitting on the porch, enjoying brunch in the morning or dessert as the sun goes down.

Lower level kitchenTracy KrafT, NesT DesigNs, LLcTaking a cue from nature, Tracy Kraft planted wheat grass in clear glass containers and botanical prints of leaves, butterflies, birds and mushrooms in shadow box frames to bring texture to the lower level kitchen. “I try to incorporate at least one natu-ral element in all my designs. These add visual and textural interest to interior spaces,” Kraft says.
Kraft took advantage of the natural color of the cabinets, which were already there, and the cool blue walls to create a memorable room that complements the nearby dining area.

Imagine walking into your brand new custom home where its fine quality is expressed throughout. Each moment you will be amazed as this place you call home continues to take your breath away. Built with such high standards, Millennium Fine Homes is one of Day-ton’s finest custom home builders.
When buying a home from Millen-nium Fine Homes you can relax in the knowledge that Douglas Pund, owner and inspiration behind Millennium Fine Homes, is personally overseeing every aspect of your new home con-struction.
With an eye for detail, Doug’s high standards and demand for quality in any budget make every Millennium home unique. Doug builds every home as if he were moving in himself.
True custom building does not come with a specific floor plan; we design the home with you and tailor each characteristic to suit your lifestyle. Al-though Doug’s taste includes a modern
contemporary European flair, we have built many traditional and transitional homes. Our architect will work di-rectly with us until your home ideas are captured and developed. Remember, we design for YOU!
Deciding what flooring, appliances, fixtures and all other options to have installed and built into your new home can be a daunting task. At Millennium Fine Homes, Doug or one of his em-ployees will personally take you to meet the suppliers who will be working on your new home.
The relationship between Millennium Fine Homes and its many vendors is very strong; the majority of them have been with Doug from the beginning. Doug only wants to work with the best, and because of the respect his vendors have for him he gets the best.
The greatest reward for Millennium Fine Homes is the sense of accomplish-ment shared by all when we hand over the keys to your brand new custom
home. Your smile will say it all.We just sold our stunning model at
Country Club of the North so Doug can implement his new innovations in a brand new model home. Construction on our brand new model home is slated to begin this summer and we are very excited to display, once again, another stunning model showcasing his unique-ness and creativity.

For over twenty years, Design Homes & Development Company Inc. has been a mainstay in the South Dayton Commu-nity and regarded as one of the finest cus-tom home builders in the industry. The company was founded by Shery Oakes in 1987 on the grounds of delivering clients high quality custom homes with expert craftsmanship, in a timely fashion, at a fair price . . . and Design Homes has de-livered!
“Design Homes feels that the custom homebuilding process should be an en-joyable experience. For many, custom building a home happens only once in a lifetime, and our goal is to make that once in a lifetime experience the best it can possibly be!” Each home offers a unique attention to detail and custom quality that abides to each client’s every discretion.
Much of the company’s success can be attested to its customer service and the rest to its diversity. With a degree in business, Shery knew the importance of being well diversified. “We are a custom builder, but have carried those skills over into many aspects of the industry. Design Homes is
a full service real estate brokerage; we offer apartments, commercial business and medical space for sale and lease, land development services and have even recently introduced Soraya Farms to the South Dayton Market, which encompass-es nearly all of our services.”
Soraya Farms is a Lifestyle Community that boasts Country French Single Fam-ily, Patio Homes and Condo-style homes surrounded by fine amenities such as a clubhouse, walking trails, fully stocked ponds, a fitness facility, pool and much more. A light retail village is planned for a later phase of the project that will show off many of the same custom finishes that the Soraya home options include and for which the company has become known.
Positioned in the South Dayton Region, Design Homes has added value through the location of their developments. Soraya Farms, Cypress Ridge, Chad-wick’s Claim and Springboro Station call Springboro / Clearcreek Township home, while a couple of new communi-ties, Yearling Farms and The Springs at Winding Creek, call Centerville / Wash-
ington Township home. Offering homes from the $190’s and lots from $48,900, along with wonderful school districts and close vicinity to shopping, entertainment and travel, Design Homes is right where you want to be!
Now more than ever, Design Homes realizes the need for its clients to be con-fident in its abilities as a builder and its staying power in the community. Shery has a few words for anyone thinking about building with Design Homes, “we are here to stay!” We’ve set a high prior-ity on customer satisfaction and our com-pany continuously ranks highly among customer satisfaction surveys. Our sole aim is that every homebuyer will be more than pleased with his or her home and the services our company has provided them.

Imagine a lifestyle community for young adults and empty nesters with tastefully appointed patio homes where they do not have to com-promise their standard of living, a home that allows them more time to enjoy leisure activities, shop, dine, socialize, and relax with friends, because the management company mows the grass, weeds the flower beds, and shovels the snow.
According to Kerry Seitel, the Di-rector of Sales and Marketing for Lifestyle Communities, the Miller Valentine Group imagined and de-signed Sugar Ridge, a Lifestyle Community on 43 beautiful acres that preserves scenic Little Sugar Creek. The community plan in-cludes a private lake, a resort-like style clubhouse, has mature trees, and stunning views. Every home is carefully constructed to blend the
best of traditional charm, modern amenities, and carefree living. A central park protects the habitat; the community has more than a mile of walking paths, and there are pocket parks with benches and arbors.
Flexible floor plans range from two to three bedrooms, and were designed with open, modern rooms. Amenities like cathedral ceilings, recessed lighting, four-season ve-randas, quality hardwood floors, up-graded cabinetry, fireplaces, under cabinet lighting, walk-in closets, private outdoor patios, and over-sized garages, considered upgrades by other builders are standard in Miller Valentine designs.
Wider doorways and hallways, larger walk-in showers, taller vani-ties, light fixtures in every room, and no step entries, allows you to live in your home comfortably for
an extended period of time, elimi-nating the need to find another home in your later years.
Energy Star®- rated furnaces, windows and appliances can save you up to 30 percent on your util-ity bills, and the exteriors are faced with stone and James Hardie® sid-ing, which creates a non-combus-tible exterior, an exterior that does not require maintenance.
Located on the southwest corner of Feedwire and Little Sugarcreek Road in Sugar Creek, sales for Sug-ar Ridge are being handled by Bill Lee & Associates, 937-542-9757. The Information Center is open Saturday through Wednesday, noon to 6.

Moss in the garden, with its vibrant
green palette, is an aesthetic to be appreci-
ated. its serene beauty seduces—calming and
restful to the eye, it is lush and invites touch.
Covering the ground with softness, and lend-
ing a green hue to shade, it grows where

Environmentally soundAdmiration of moss in the garden doesn’t come easily to people who revere a lush lawn above all else. Moss that creeps into their turf is declared a “weed” and cause for chemical warfare. This often backfires though, as weed killers aid the spread of moss by way of clearing the soil of competing plants. Moss is an excellent, chemical-free, no-mow alternative ground cover that is ideal for shady conditions. Once established, moss takes less maintenance than turf and I say, “Where the grass wants out, let the moss come in!” Encourage what nature wants to do. You, your garden, and the environment, will all benefit.
Promoting moss growth requires regular clearing of leaf lit-ter and other debris—nothing more. Well, nothing more than patience and time, but the reward, aah…a forest floor volup-tuously carpeted in a velvety green so compelling to bare feet that you must shuck off your shoes (and show off your pedicure!) for a tickly trip across the cushy swatch.
Natural and enchantingPerhaps you don’t have a lot of shade in your yard. No problem. You can grow moss in smaller patches and on many surfaces. A mossy covering adds the patina of permanence; its ageless beauty, long appreciated in the gardens of Japan, can be a visual element in your garden too. Moss can be grown successfully in containers tucked into a shady nook. It can also be raised innocuously on rocks, walls, roofs, and statuary due to the fact that it doesn’t have destructive roots. Instead, moss puts out wispy, root-like extensions (technically, rhizoids) that hold it in place. Even in dormancy moss adds both texture and color in the garden.
Growing moss where none exists is trickier than encouraging what wants to grow. Some advice? Choose your location well—it must offer shade, moisture and acidic soil (pH level 5.0-6.0, is ideal). The area to be planted must be clear of existing plants and debris. Place moss plants onto the soil, tamp them firmly into position, and water regularly for the first 2-3 weeks.
Assuming environmental conditions are met, transplanting sheets or clumps of moss is the fastest way but may not fit into everyone’s budget. An economical, but more iffy option is to create a moss slurry in a blender. Mix a handful of moss with a liquid (water, beer, or buttermilk) and a spoonful of water reten-tion gel, and blend briefly until thick. Smear the mixture over the prepared planting bed where you want the moss to grow. Water constantly until well established. This method can also be effec-tively used on rocks, statuary and terracotta pots.

A moss lawn is an ideal shady ground cover, but it’s best to keep your dogs and cats away—they can tear it up and their urine can leave black rings.

A moss pathway is pleasurable to walk on (you won’t hurt it). Just remember to tamp down any patches that you might accidentally kick up.

Collecting mossesThe best times of the year to collect and transplant mosses are in spring and fall. Search for moss nearby that is growing in con-ditions similar to where you will be transplanting it. There are some mosses that will grow in sun with adequate moisture. Only harvest moss from a natural or wild area where it is permitted by law. And, you should take only a small portion of what is growing there. If possible, collect moss after a rain. Care must be taken not to destroy its system of pores so dig up small clumps with some soil still attached.
Moss growing in between a walkway is both picturesque and functional. It slows the erosion of soil during heavy rains.
