INTRODUCTION
This is the most advanced newly addedtechnical tool used in cricket.
It was also introduced by channel-9 network ofAustralia.
In hotspot the idea is to have 2 infraredcameras static above the field of cricket arena
and continuously record play. It shows the point where the ball hit the
batsman.

USE OF HOT SPOT
Its principal application in cricket is in decidingwhether the ball has struck the batsman bat orpad
If the ball strikes the bat and the is caught bythe fielder, batsman is considered to be out.
The point of impact between the bat and ball(or pad ) is determined by the heat generated at
the time of collision. This can also be used to determine the sweet
spot of contact.

MECHANISM
Hot Spot uses two infra-red cameras positioned at
either end of the ground. These cameras sense and
measure heat fromfriction generated by a
collision, such as ball on pad, ball on bat, ball onground or ball on glove. Using a subtraction
technique a series of black-and-white negativeframes is generated into a computer, precisely
localising the ball's point of contact.

HISTORY
Hot Spot uses technology developed in the military for tank and jetfighter tracking. The technology was founded by French scientistNicholas Bion, before being worked upon by many companies in Parisand being bought and adopted by the Australian Nine Network.
The technology was adapted for television byBBG Sports, theAustralian company responsible for the Snickometer, in conjunctionwith Sky Sports.
The technology was first used during the first Test match of the 2006-07 Ashes atThe Gabba, on 23 November 2006.
The ICC announced that Hot Spot images would be available for use aspart of its ongoing technology trial during the second and third Tests(March 2009) in South Africa. The system was be available to the thirdumpire in the event of a player referral.

The ICC announced that Hot Spot images would be available foruse as part of its ongoing technology trial during the second andthird Tests (March 2009) in South Africa. The system was beavailable to the third umpire in the event of a player referral.
For the 2012 season BBG Sport introduced a new generation ofHOT Spot using the very high performance SLX-Hawk thermalimaging cameras provided by UK based SELEX Galileo. Thesecameras provided sharper images with improved sensitivity andmuch less motion blur than earlier HOT Spot technologies. As aresult, the latest HOT Spot system is able to detect much finer edgenicks than in previous seasons, essentially ending all earlier doubts
about the capability of the technology. Following the success of thisupdated HOT Spot system, BBG Sport and SELEX Galileo signed anexclusivity agreement for the supply of SLX-Hawk cameras for HOTSpot in cricket and other sports.

ADVANTAGES/ DISADVANTAGES
Hot Spot has two main advantages over itscompeting technology, the Snickometer, which is asound-detection based system. Snickometer often
produces inconclusive results indicating contact(potentially any combination of bat, pad and ball)only, whereas the Hot Spot clearly shows exactlywhat the ball strikes. Precise synchronisation ofthe Snickometer sound with associated pictures
takes time, making it currently not suitable for usein the umpire decision review system.

ADVANTAGES/ DISAVANTAGES CONT..
Hot Spot technology, even though claimed to be extremelyaccurate, is not used in many matches. The main reason forthis is its expense: $6000 per day for the use of two camerasand $10000 for the use of four cameras. Warren Brennan, theowner of BBG Sports, said the unwillingness of theInternational Cricket Council or national cricket boards to payto use the expensive technology had restricted its use: "Wewon't be supplying Hot Spot to the World Cup next year, even
for the semis or finals, if the cricket boards want a feed of thatfor adjudication purposes, they should contribute to the costs.
TheAshes could be the last hurrah."

ADVANTAGES/ DISADVANTAGES CONT..
In the India-England ODI Series in 2011, therewere controversial decisions based on the HotSpot technology going against India's Rahul
Dravidon more than one occasion where HotSpot replays proved inconclusive and yetDravid was given out. On one occasion, thereseemed to be a nick which Hot Spot wasn't able
to detect. These incidents threw the role of HotSpot technology into doubt once again.

CONCLUSION
This ultramodern technologies are used toimprove the quality of the game ,but some how Ithink that these technologies are taking thegame away from its tradition .In early 80s there
was not even the facility of the third umpire, in2002 there was the introduction of hawk-eye, in2006 the hotspot and now you can evenoverturn an umpire decision with UDRS .Now Iwonder a day will come when umpires willvanish from sports all because of thetechnology .For me it is 70-30 in favour oftradition over technology.
