Dental X-rays and Cancer

There is no longer any dental x-ray that is taken as a routine

1Clinical Issues

CancerThe Journal of the American Cancer Association, 2012

Cancer, the peer-viewed journal of the American Cancer Society, found that people diagnosed with meningioma, a generally non-cancerous tumor, are more likely to report that they’ve received certain types of dental X-rays in the past.

Dental X-rays and Cancer

Eliminating dental X-rays could be detrimental

1Clinical Issues

American Dental Association

“… Dental X-rays are a valuable part of detecting oral health problems at an early stage. Many oral diseases can’t be detected with a physical examination alone. Dental X-rays help provide information about a patient’s oral health such as early-stage cavities, gum diseases, infections and some types of tumors. How often dental X-rays should be taken depends on the patient’s oral health condition, age, risk for disease and any signs and symptoms of oral disease that the patient might be experiencing …”

Circulation,The Journal of the American Heart Association, 2012.

For over 100 years there has been an growing link between cardiovascular disease ... heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure … and periodontal disease. However, at present there is no evidence of a direct cause and effect linkage between gum disease and heart disease

Perio.org,The American Association of Periodontics, 2012.

People with chronic gum infections are more than twice as likely to have a stroke or have a heart attack. Several theories exist to explain the link between periodontal disease and heart disease. Oral bacteria can affect the fatty plaques in the coronary arteries (heart blood vessels) and contributing to clot formation. Another possibility is that the inflammation caused by periodontal disease increases plaque build up, which may contribute to swelling of the arteries

periodontal disease at every dental visit• Consent to thorough periodontal treatment if

suggested …. consider tooth straightening• Ensure good oral health by careful home care

practices and steps to reduce overall inflammation• Obtain periodontal records if you have a history of

periodontal disease• Offer your records to your new dentist at your initial
