6 A) Sport Medicine Symposium: (Refer to page 5 for schedule)

TOPIC #2:  Nutritional Interventions for Recovery in Athletes – Sherry Robertson, RD, ChPC Registered Dietitian Chartered Professional Coach (NCCP Level 4 Certified), Sport Nutrition Consultant, IOC Diploma Sports Nutrition (candidate) The role of nutrition in sport is a critical factor in performance outcomes. Key nutrients can make a difference for the recreational athletic enthusiast to the elite, Olympic-bound athlete. Many factors contribute to success in sport such as genetics, training programs and resistance to illness and injury. In competition, the margin between victory and defeat is usually small and attention to every detail can make that vital difference. Nutrition is a key element for both health as well as athletic preparation. Diet affects performance, and the foods that are chosen will affect training and competition. Diet may have its biggest impact on recovery, and suitable recovery eating will help support consistent, intensive training while reducing the risk of illness or injury. Good food choices can also promote adaptations in muscle and other tissues in response to the training stimulus. Athletes are all different, and an individualized nutritional program is recommended. This presentation will address some of the emerging new trends in the role of nutrition for performance and will highlight and focus on how nutrition can play a major role in recovery. Outline of presentation:

1. Introduction and unique needs of athletes 2. Energy Availability 3. Key macronutrients (carbohydrate and protein) 4. Common micronutrient deficiencies 5. Recovery Protocol 6. Supplements 7. Areas of Concern: Disordered Eating, Eating Disorders, Relative Energy Deficiency in

Sport 8. Research and Future Trends 9. How nutrition and massage are complimentary in recovery 10. Summary

For over a decade, Sherry Robertson coached the Canadian National Synchronized Swim Team to podium performances at major International competitions including (Pan American Games, Commonwealth Games, World Championships and the Olympic Games). As a RD as well as a Chartered Professional coach, Sherry has been providing nutritional counseling and presentations for National Teams and individual athletes in a variety of sports. Most recently, Sherry was invited as part of the FINA expert nutrition panel, which met in London England (Dec., 2014). Sherry was one of the lead authors on the recently published dedicated additions, “Swimming & Nutrition”, in the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism. Sherry is an accomplished speaker in the area of current nutritional issues and has spoken at many conferences and organizations throughout Canada, Untied States and Europe.
