The April 1st meeting was called to order at 6:30 pm. President Meg Shellenberger wished a happy birthday to the April girls and thanked them for helping to set up and take down. She reminded them we will need help with the speaker tonight and with the show and tell. Meg also welcomed new members and visitors.

Meg called for additions or corrections to the minutes as published in the newsletter. Lynne Kuch made a motion to accept the minutes as read and Dora Trotter seconded the motion. The minutes were approved as read.

The Treasurer Jackie Furuheim read the Treasurer’s report. 2nd Vice President Wava Wright reported that the inventories for the storage locker needs to be in by the

May general meeting. If anyone has anything for the storage locker at home they need to write it down and hand into Wava at the next meeting. Wava was in need of at least four people for the Library Audit. The volunteers were Donna Martin, Judy Ballance, Linda Martin, Sandra Grace, Rita Jackson and Kathleen Matthews. We also have a need for four people for the Inventory at the storage locker. The volunteers were, Rita Jackson, Lauran Myers, Rodie Burd, and Connie Fessler.

Community Quilt chairs, Nan Pickett and Irene Hudspeth thanked everyone that donated fabric and brought back tops. They will be meeting again at Pacific Fabrics on April 15th at 10:00am. They will also be working on blue and yellow quilt pattern. Come and help put kits together for quilt tops.

Jackie Furuheim reminded us about the community service report needed to record our community service projects. This report shows where our service projects are going out to. We like to have a record of all the community service quilts that have been done, including tops only, any quilting, hand or long armed, bindings done also. If it was a group project only one person should fill out the report. We still have six months to keep track of the information. Jackie will need the reports around quilt show time. Forms can be found on the web site.

Mini Groups chair Dorothy Lindquist reported four more new groups starting. They are Strippin’ n

Stitchin’, Modern Quilting, Machine Embroidery and Machine Applique. Check the newsletter for the details of times and place’s.

Membership chair Berta Stone reported 81 members present. No new members or visitors. Logo Boutique chair Mary McAlhany was in the back of the room taking orders for totes, aprons, shirts,

etc. Go back and take a look at what’s available for sale. Order item tonight and pick up at the May meeting. Check out the web site for all your Logo needs.

1st Vice President Simone Montfort reminded us May will bring our third annual Auffle. This is a combination silent auction and raffle. Members bring in any sewing related items they no longer need. At the meeting, we buy $1.00 tickets and use them to “bid” on items we like. The June meeting will be

Melody Crust teaching a class on Borders: The Final Chapter. In July we will have Shirley Sandoz talking all about bindings. August will be our annual potluck picnic. Simone then introduced our speaker of the evening Colleen Wise. She likes to create quilt designs that float. She showed us many of her quilts. We enjoyed her presentation.

Meg made the report for the Sunshine chair. A card would be going out to Barbie Mundt as her husband had passed away.

Monika Adams and Michele Ogletree encouraged all the ladies to distribute the quilt show book marks. Take a stack large or small and distribute all over your local shops whether it be quilt shops, service organizations Library or where ever. Do it for the Guild!

Challenge quilt chair Sandy VanDePutte reminded us to sign up for the quilt challenge. See the details in the newsletter.

Simone also reminded us about the work shop wearables meeting on the 3rd Saturday of the next month, May 16th. See newsletter for the details.

April Guild Meeting Minutes

Page 3: Hosted by May Birthday Members Sign up for classes and ......The April 1st meeting was called to order at 6:30 pm. President Meg Shellenberger wished a happy birthday to the April

Quilt show co-chairs Idena Downey & Lynne Kuch reminded us to continue to bring in fat quarters. We have over 200 so far. The next Quilt show meeting is April 15th at Stafford Suites at 7:00 pm. All committee’s for the quilt show need to be present at that meeting.

There was a challenge to all mini groups to consider making at least 12 blocks for the Auction block booth at the show.

Sandra Grace of the Treasure Chest encouraged anyone to sell their items at the treasure chest. The guild will make 10% on all items sold. She is in need of someone to co-chair that. Jackie Furuheim offered to help. So start getting stuff together and getting labels on it and be prepared to donate three hours to the Treasure Chest during the quilt show.

The latest slate of new officers is Barbara Bolson, President; Elle Culver, 1st VP; Wava Wright, Treasurer; Rita Jackson, 2nd VP; Karen Bodeutsch, Gen. Secretary; Syndie Hagardt, Board Secretary. Nominations from the floor will be accepted in May (Robert’s Rules Apply) and voting will take place in

our May meeting. Be thinking about helping on a Standing Committee job; if you wish to “retire” from a job, please

advise the President so our new President will have a full slate! The President needs an audit committee to audit the guild books after the May general meeting but

before the May board meeting. There is no date set yet. The audit committee volunteers are: Kathleen Matthews, Kathleen Littfin, Donna Martin, Connie Fessler, Wava Wright.

The 2015 Raffle quit is almost ready. A name is still being considered for the Quilt. We should have the tickets soon and site sales can begin.

The 2016 Raffle Quilt design has been selected. It is called Connect the Stars. Those interested in being on the work party committee contact Lillian Schauer. The ones that volunteered are: Barbara Bolson, Jackie Furuheim, Meg Shellenberger, Lauran Myers, and Sally Heilinger Janice Haines, and Elaine Herndel.

Lynne Kuch moved to adopt the purposed budget. Sandra Grace seconded the motion. After discussion the motion passed. The budget committee recommended $15.00 dues for June thru December and $10.00 fee for mailing of the newsletter. Lillian Schauer moved to accept the dues and newsletter fees. Seconded by Joyce Lorenzen. The motion passed. Lillian Schauer led the proposed By-Laws & Standing Rules Discussion. All the dates have been fixed. The President’s duties changed a bit. “The board’s agenda will be posted on the web site five days prior to the board meeting”. Tax returns need to be filed on time and

any extensions need board approval. Under Mini group’s membership there is not a requirement to be in a group. Sunshine chair will not have to pay out of her pocket for cards. Note on page 13, there is a detailed description on money handling. The treasure chest is a Guild event. The treasurer will do all the money handling. Discussion and vote will be next month.

Meg gave a special thank you for the committee’s involved in budget, nominating, and audit. Winner of this month’s block of the month is Rita Jackson. Next month‘s block is “Rose Bud,” to be

done in florals and solids. Check the newsletter for instructions. Dates to remember:

Newsletter deadline is April 10th. Board meeting is Tuesday April 28th at 2:30 pm at

Stafford Suites Next General meeting is May 6th. (2015 Elections) Next Quilt show meeting is April 15th- Big room at

Stafford Suites 7:00 pm. Meeting Adjourned at 9:30 pm Respectfully submitted, Karen Bodeutsch, Secretary

What a treat it was to see Colleen Wise’s quilts at our general meeting this month! I am anxious to see the quilts from her class; were you one of the students? Her floating motifs have always appealed to me and now she has expanded her catalog of designs with the quilts in her “cemetery series.” Great stuff !!

I have been contemplating writing up a “bucket list” of quilts I want to make. There are so

many quilt patterns that are whispering my name. I’ve decided a formal list might move certain

quilts off the “good intentions” list to the “Finished!” list. This list will certainly include a Mariners Compass, a Ricky Tims Rhapsody quilt, a double wedding ring and a whole cloth quilt. When my list is ready, there will be many more quilts on the list. I have a tendency to keep my quilting plans in my head, resisting a commitment to a written plan but I think the time has come to grow up just a little. (Goodbye, Peter Pan)

What quilts would make it on YOUR bucket list? Will one of them be entered in this years quilt show? It would be such a wonderful exhibit if everyone of us had at least one entry in the fall show. Quilts need not be big bed sized quilts; small entries allow variety of color & style. Don’t think for a minute you aren’t “good enough” yet…we all began with one quilt.

Our May meeting will be such fun! If you have never been to our previous “Auffles” you won’t want to miss this one. Please consider bringing a donation of new or “like new” quilting

paraphernalia or fabric to entice your fellow guild members and bring money for your tickets ($1.00 per ticket) You never know just what you might win!! Also, this is our annual meeting. We will elect our new slate of officers for the next term (June through December) and will vote on the proposed By-Laws and Standing Rules. See you in May! Meg Shellenberger, nearly former President and possibly former procrastinator!

May Birthdays

Attached is a photo of Georgia Ovestrud that was taken at Retsil Veterans Home. She goes there the fourth Monday of every month and does patching for the residence. She has also make bags for the walker and wheel chair patients. This last month she made aprons and donated them for therapy. She does all of this in the name of West Sound Quilters.

Believe it or not, the quilt show is only six months away. We have lots of work to do! All vendor letters have been sent out and we are eagerly waiting for responses. We do have at least five to date but sure need more. Our fat quarter raffle is well on its way. We still need more but are getting close to our goal of 250. Meg is busy cutting her fabric to match the ones that have been turned in so far. Those of you who were at the April meeting saw Friday’s Girls blocks

that they have donated to the Auction Blocks. Thanks to all of them and hopefully this will inspire other mini groups to also make blocks for the Auction Blocks. It does not have to be a mini group…it can be just one person, or small group. This has been a great money maker for us in the past and hope that it will be even better this year. Sandra will have more information regarding the Treasure Chest at the May meeting. Please be sure to participate if you have items that you no longer need or use, including fabric. You also can make things to sell. It is a great way to clean out your sewing area and stash...That way you will be able to buy or get more!

We have a quilt show meeting for ALL Chairmen on April 15th at Stafford Suites at 7:00 pm. I will be sending an email to all for a reminder. IF you have any questions for us or would like to attend, please come or give me a call. Meanwhile, we all need to be doing our part by making quilts for the show. The more quilts we have, the nicer the show will be.

Happy Stitching, Lynne and Idena

President – Barb Bolson First Vice-President – Elle Culver

Second Vice-President – Rita Jackson Secretary (gen meetings) – Karen Bodeutsch

Secretary (Board meetings) – Syndie Haggard Treasurer – Wava Wright

The nominating committee has proposed this slate of names to fill the officers’ positions for the

next term. All these candidates are very well qualified for their respective offices. According to Robert’s Rules, additional nominations will be taken from the floor at the annual May meeting.

These members must agree to be nominated prior to nomination and will be write in candidates.

Meg Shellenberger, Pres.

Thank you everyone who has helped us these last few months. We have been having a great turnout at Pacific Fabrics and our long arm ladies are doing a great job too. To reword a phrase "It may take a village to raise a child and sometimes a guild to make a quilt for that child". We will be back at Pacific Fabrics on the third Wednesday of this month. Bring your sewing kit and machine to work on the blue and yellow quilt. We will also be putting quilt top kits together with the fat quarters.

Thanks again - Irene and Nan

Greetings Fellow Quilters!

In April, Colleen Wise shared her wonderful quilts and we had a wonderful time in her workshop the next day. Colleen is a great teacher.

May will bring our third annual Auffle. This is a combination silent auction and raffle. Please bring in any nice sewing related items that you no longer need, to donate. Remember to bring some money to buy $1 tickets and use them to “bid” on items

you like. There will be lots of fun items to bid on.

In June Melody Crust will be talking about: Borders: The Final Chapter. She says that Borders add something special! They can change the look of a quilt and add a wonderful finishing touch. Come away with ideas to beautifully frame your quilts. Learn how to repeat fabrics, color and motifs to plan a successful border. Melody will show lots of examples of traditional and innovative quilts. Tips and examples for quilting borders complete the final chapter. Her website is: melodycrust.com

In July Shirley Sandoz from Mystery Bay Quilting will be talking to us about the basics of a fast, beautiful French or double fold binding with square corners, “all by machine” binding techniques and where they should be used. Her advanced binding techniques include two fabric bindings, piping, prairie points, curves and sharp points, etc. For more information, her website is: mysterybayquiltdesign.com

August will be our annual potluck picnic. Details to follow.

September will be all about our Quilt Show.

October will be our Quilt Show wrap-up.

I would love to schedule some $10 classes. If there are any mini-groups or individuals who would like to host one, let me know. Happy Sewing! Simone Montfort

American Hero Quilts was started in 2002 with the dream that they could cover our brave service men and women with a metaphoric "hug" in the form of a quilt in patriotic colors. The quilts are made by volunteers from all over the United States and several parts of the world. Each heirloom quality quilt is made by many hands and only carries one label, it says "You are our Hero, Thank You." It is an honor and privilege to make the quilts and is our way of saying, thank you for their sacrifice and service. One hundred quilts are sent to Afghanistan each month to cover our injured service members as they are medevac’d out of country. Quilts are also sent to the Warrior Transition Battalion at Joint Base Lewis McCord.

Local Sew Days 1st Tuesday of the month, Pacific Fabrics, East Bremerton, WA 1 to 5 First Wednesday of the Month, Quilt Revolution, Gig Harbor, 10:30 to 2:30

For more information about American Hero Quilts go to www.americanheroquilts.com http://americanheroquiltswa.blogspot.com. For local information, please contact Ione Ewert Whitney 360-908-4692 for more information.

Each year, as a thank you to Stafford Suites for letting WSQ hold our Board & Quilt Show meetings there, we hang a small quilt show in their lobby. This year, the dates requested by Stafford are May 8th through May 10th. We bring quilts that have not been hung at Stafford before. The owner or maker of the quilt and town are printed on a 3 X 5 card pinned to the front of the quilt (Donna Haggard, Olalla). We will need a team of volunteers to hang the quilts on Friday May 8th at 3:00pm and we will take down the quilts on Sunday, May 10th…Please note: takedown is

Mothers Day. If you cannot be there yourself for set up or takedown, you may have another guild member bring your quilts. Contact Meg Shellenberger 876-4564 for more information.

At Spring Retreat I posed the following question: “What favorite technique or tip would you like

to share with other quilters?” The responses were amazing and are listed below!

Hang around “seasoned quilters”: listen, observe, and ask questions. Retreats are a great

place to learn! (Kathy W.)

There are no quilt police! If all else fails, use appliqué. Some of my favorite quilts are

covered with appliqué! (Simone M.)

Before you begin to quilt, pull the bobbin thread up to the quilt top. Put it and the top

thread to the side. Begin stitching and when far enough away, tie a knot in the threads,

and use a self-threading needle to pull the threads back into the batting. (Carolyn B.)

Starch before cutting, during construction, and before you square-up blocks, especially

with bias edges! (Trish H.)

If you are having trouble with bias edges, it means that you haven’t starched your fabric

enough! Starch it into submission. Starch some fabric until it stacks like cut paper, i.e.,

when needing ½ square triangles. Ironing from the back side of fabric reduces residue

and “shine” on the front. Starched fabrics usually do not fray much. (Donna H.)

Put salt on a piece of tin foil and iron over it to remove melted plastic from those pin

heads that have stuck to the bottom of your iron. (Lillian S.)

We spend a lot of money on tools to promote accuracy, so be sure to check the surface of

your ironing board. If it has warped, replace it! Ironing over it will distort your blocks

and/or quilt. (Virginia S.)

Use large pill boxes to keep machine needles organized. Each section can be labeled to

hold different needles, i.e., Universal, Microtex, Jeans, Ball Point, Quilting, etc. One

compartment could be used to hold old needles if you like. (Shelley H.)

Make sure that you go into your seam with a ¼ inch measurement, and come out of your

seam with a ¼ inch measurement. Make your motto, “Into the quarter, out of the

quarter.” (Thelma M.)

Use a pinking shears or pinking blade on a rotary cutter to cut the edge of fabric prior to

washing. It helps avoid raveling on some edges and greatly reduces it on others. (Elaine

H.)

Be willing to change your mind as you move through the quilting process. (Joyce L.)

Cut an old flannel-backed vinyl tablecloth into sections, creating small portable design

walls for block construction or appliqué blocks. These can be rolled up and carried with

you. (Wava W. and Carolyn B.)

To save time, cut threads as you go rather than wait until your project is finished. (2) If

you start scrappy, you will never run out of fabric. Use a wide variety of fabrics within a

quilt, i.e., if a pattern calls for 2 blues, use 4-6 blues instead. (3) Not all quilt projects

deserve to be finished. Work on those that bring you joy! (Pat B.)

To avoid stretching of background fabrics when doing machine embroidery: (1) try putting

only your stabilizer in the hoop. Mount it so that it is very taut. Position your project

fabric on top of the hoop and stabilizer. Most embroidery machines will have a “fix” or

TIPSTER: Tips from Retreat

Page 9: Hosted by May Birthday Members Sign up for classes and ......The April 1st meeting was called to order at 6:30 pm. President Meg Shellenberger wished a happy birthday to the April

“baste” stitch that will outline your chosen design and secure all layers together before it

begins to stitch the design. (Jackie F.)

Save old sewing machine needles and use them when hanging pictures on drywall or wood.

(Joan S.)

Hold multiple layers of fabric together prior to sewing by inserting pins at 45 degree

angles to the seam line, rather than doing so at 45 degree angles. This method helps to

stabilize the bias within fabrics. (Syndy H. learned this trick from Joyce while at retreat

and wanted to pass this great tip onto others.)

NEVER underestimate the value of good pressing (it’s NOT ironing). It really can help

improve your piecing. (Mari W.)

Create brushes for cleaning small spaces in the bobbin area of your machine by inserting

a pipe cleaner into a coffee stir stick. Bend the end back to make a rounded tip.

(Kathleen)

Replace cutting boards that have grooves in them as the rotary cutter blade will

sometimes follow the groove, causing uneven cuts of fabric. (Tipster)

Always cut with the rotary cutter blade against your ruler edge, and perpendicular to

your cutting surface. Any slight angle of the rotary cutter can cause a cut to be just

“threads” different than the size you want, leading to blocks not being the correct size.

(Tipster)

To spot the hole immediately and make it easier to hang a ruler, affix an adhesive

“reinforcer” (looks like a donut) around the hole. These are inexpensive and can be

purchased where stationery items are sold. (Tipster)

Be easy on yourself! Believe in the “Forty, Forty Rule”. If you can’t see your work from 40

feet away or when going 40 miles per hour, it’s nothing to worry about! (Dora T.)

With this column, my commitment as Tipster has come to an end. Someone will be taking over

soon. It has been a fun year. Thank you for your support and encouragement. Happy Quilting!

Sandy VanDePutte, Tipster

** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block ** Stack the Color 1 and Color 2 4-7/8" x 14-5/8" strips right sides together. Lightly mark 4-7/8" intervals on the back of the top strip. Using a rotary cutter cut them into three 4-7/8" squares..

Next, stack these squares, and having lightly marked a diagonal line on the back of one, use the rotary cutter to cut them on the diagonal, being careful not to stretch the fabrics!...

First, stack then sew one Color 1 triangle with one Color 2 triangle, using a scant 1/4" seam, again being careful NOT to stretch fabrics as you sew! Press seam allowances towards darker fabric. Make six of these. Trim to measure 4-1/2" if needed...

Sew together your squares as shown at left. Press seams in opposite directions by row. Join the rows to complete your block!
