"Voyage of Discovery" 2017 AAHGS National Conference Cruise

Washington, DC. – The Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society (AAHGS) will hold

its 38th National Genealogy Conference October 19 - 24, 2017 on board the Carnival Cruise Ship

which will leave from the port of Charleston, South Carolina. Participants will have an opportunity

to attend a series of workshops and programs in celebration of more than a quarter century of service

to the Carolinas (North and South Carolina) and the Charleston community. Forty to Sixty percent

of Africans who were brought to America during the slave trade, entered through the port of

Charleston and the South Carolina Low Country. This has given the Low Country, the designation

among some historians as the "Ellis Island for African Americans". Other historians dispute this

since the Ellis Island immigrants arrived voluntarily as opposed to the Africans, who were captured

in the Atlantic slave trade. Each year family historians and genealogists from California to Maine gather to seek answers to

discovering their family roots. The theme, “Voyage of Discovery" endeavors to bring

together persons from diverse backgrounds, distant geographic areas, and similar interests to

continue this tradition. Conference Attendees will have the opportunity to meet guests, exchange information and ideas, and

network with attendees from around the country. The conference will consist of broad choices of

workshops and facilitators with over 21 sessions, focusing on resources, research methods, historic

events, and our ancestors who have paved the way. Experienced historians and genealogists will

lecture on subjects targeted to the beginner, the advanced, the hobbyist, or the professional

researcher. AAHGS is a non-profit, 501(C)(3) membership organization, committed to the preservation of

history, genealogy, and the culture of diverse groups of people from local, national, and international

communities. The Society stresses the importance of history and genealogy by encouraging active

participation in recording research and documenting personal family histories. If you would like to participate in the Conference, please refer to the attachments (Call for Papers /
