THE HOSPITALLER ORDER OF ST. LAZARUS OF JERUSALEM

From the Desk of the Chancellor Christopher A. Chambers, KLJ, CMLJ, Chancellor, Grand Priory of the USA

Dear Confreres and Consoeurs,

Earlier this year it was my great honor to be appointed the Chancellor of the Grand Priory of

the United States. I would like to thank my predecessor The Hon. Dr. Benjamin Zvenia for all

of his hard work as chancellor since the founding of the US Grand Priory. His appointment as

Chancellor Emeritus is most well deserved. I would also like to thank Confrere Andranik Ando

Yesayan for taking over as the new Commander of the Commandery of California.

The US Grand Priory is still very young, only in its 3rd year of existence, and yet it has already

made great strides. We now have members in 19 states, and have established the Commandery

of Indigenous Peoples, truly a first of its kind. Most importantly, individual members and

commanderies have been consistently carrying out charitable and hospitaller work in their

communities and around the world. We also continue to participate in cooperative efforts with

likeminded partners such as Humanity Healing International with which we have now worked

on several projects.

This year the US Grand Priory has also started focusing its efforts on increasing our visibility

and educating the public as to our existence and activities. Earlier in the year I was a guest on

Confrere Dr. Eliezer Ben-Joseph’s radio talk show, Natural Solutions Radio. We spent the

interview discussing the historical Order of St. Lazarus, as well as the current organization and

activities of the Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem. More recently Consoeur Dame

Karen Cantrell DLJ DMLJ has overseen the production of several videos highlighting the

Order’s activities on important causes. Lastly, many members have also been active in the

United Nations Association of the USA. In addition to doing their own small part to help shape

diplomatic policy, it also introduces the HOSLJ and its activities to a wide audience of policy

makers, academics, and activists.

Another area in which the US Grand Priory has been very effective is in helping with the

formation of new Grand Priories in other parts of the world. Key individuals were responsible

for the upcoming establishment of the Grand Priory of Armenia as well as the Grand Priory of

Canada. The chancellor’s elect and other key officers elect from both Armenia and Canada will

be present at our next Investiture for their entrance into the order and consecration of their

Grand Priories.

We can be rightly proud of our accomplishments these last few years. Nevertheless there is still

quite a bit of work ahead of us. One area of great importance is the ongoing recruitment of new

members. In addition to still only being active in less than half of the states, many state

commanderies are comprised of very few members. Lastly, we each need to commit ourselves

to the ongoing work of the Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem. Receiving your

brevet and medal isn’t the end; it is just the very beginning of ongoing service.

WE SEEK TO EMULATE THE STRONG AND DIDACTIC TRADITIONS OF THE MEDIEVAL ORDER OF SAINT LAZARUS AND ENSURE THAT THE LAZARITE

SPIRIT OF HOSPITALLER AID, PHILANTHROPY AND CHIVALRY ARE PASSED ON FROM ONE GENERATION TO ANOTHER.

We are pleased to announce that the Sacred Medical Order of the Knights of Hope, which are fully fledged members of the United Grand Priories of the Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem, has attained official recognition with the highest authorities of the Nevis Island Government. Certificates, as public documents, can now be apostilled and notarized by the Order's island law firm. The Apostille Convention, or the Apostille Treaty is an international treaty drafted by the Hague Conference on Private International Law. It specifies the modalities through which a document issued in one of the signatory countries can be certified for legal purposes in all the other signatory states. Such a certification is called an apostille (French: certification). It is an international certification comparable to a notarization in domestic law. With this governmental recognition, SMOKH can now issue world-wide clerical medical licenses for Missionary Medicine. This will inevitably ensure even more Hospitaller work worldwide by SMOKH dedicated knights and dames.

The Sacred Medical Order of the Knights of Hope is a Church with a special and sacred ministry and a medical religious Order. As an ecumenical Order, membership of the Sacred Medical Order is by invitation to both men and women who are of good character and standing in their community, want to learn about our sacred medicines, and who wish to help suffering mankind.

SMOKH has many members from diverse fields. Now in its fifth year of development and growth, focus is now on education and preparedness.

Mission Statement

Hope is an essential and fundamental element of Christian life, so essential indeed, that, like faith and love, it can itself designate the essence of Christianity.

Healing is what happens when Pastoral Practitioners minister, enabling people to receive restoration to health of body and mind through God's great love and mercy. This restoration of health is part of what is meant by the abundant life which the Lord promised. The Order is based in Equador and has member missions in Nepal, Nevis, the Philippines, Venezuela, and Curacao.

The Union Corps San Lazare International has, for these last four years now, been constantly working in alliance with the Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem in order to further Lazarite Hospitaller work worldwide. The Union CSLI, with its offices in Austria, have progressed throughout these years from an Austrian Lazarite phenomenon into a fully fledged international Lazarite operation. In January 2012, the Board of Governors of the Union CSLI unanimously voted to change its constitution so as to ensure that the Grand Protector of the Union CSLI would also be the Supreme Grand Prior of the Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem. With this addendum, the Union CSLI became a fully fledged member of the United Grand Priories of the Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem, with its two senior officers representing the Union CSLI within the Supreme Grand Priory of the Order. During the April 2012 solemn investiture of the Order of Saint Lazarus, which formed part of the First International Lazarite Symposium held at the Knights' of Malta's Sacra Infermeria, in Valletta, a delegation of the Lazarus Union CSLI led by its President and Union Commander in Chief Senator Wolfgang Steinhardt and also composed of several high ranking officers of the CSLI was present for the event in question. During the International Lazarite Symposium, the Union CSLI delegation fully participated in the international exchange of ideas on the goals and methods of the various Lazarus organizations. Speakers from Europe and America presented their organizations and their Hospitaller goals and conducted discussions related to the modern tools needed in marketing for the international Lazarite community. On Saturday, the investiture ceremony was celebrated in the most impressive Sacra Infermeria, historically being the biggest hospital of the Knights of Malta. The Knights' hall is 160 meters long, 10.5 meters wide, and 11 meters high. Chaired by the Grand Prior of the United Grand Priories, H.E. Richard Comyns of Ludston after an impressive procession in front of the former hospital's gates (currently Malta's largest conference centre) and the

never ending march past of the knights and dames, guests and delegates, the investiture ceremony commenced. One of the highlights of the solemn investiture was indeed the declaration of the overall protectorate of the Knighthoodship of Honour of the Lazarus Union-CSLI by the Supreme Grand Prior.

In the course of this take-over the Grand Chancellor of the United Priories, Chev. Max J. Ellul and H.E. Richard Comyns of Ludston, the Supreme Grand Prior of the United Grand Priories of the Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem, stressed and publicly pledged in front of almost 1000 participants from 17 countries that from this investiture onwards: "...every good deed done for the Lazarus Union is also a good deed done for the United Grand Priories, but every attack on the Lazarus Union is considered also an attack on the United Grand Priories." In return, the high ranking delegation of the Union CSLI, led by Senator Wolfgang Steinhardt, took the oath of membership of the United Grand Priories and pledged their allegiance to the Supreme Grand Prior of

the Order. The Lazarus Union is now firmly ingrained within the United Grand Priories and its close synergy with the United Grand Priories during these past four years augur well for this new chapter within the international Lazarite community wherein the main aim of such a joining of forces is solely the increase of Lazarite awareness and Hospitaller work worldwide.

Women are the most marginalized, oppressed and downtrodden group in Pakistani society. Every day the newspapers are full of stories about horrible crimes against women. These include domestic violence, child marriage or Vani, acid throwing, bride burning, exchange marriages or Watta Sattas, dowry death, murder of pregnant women, human trafficking, sexual slavery, forced prostitution, sexual violence, rape, female genital cutting, domestic violence and even the killing of innocent women in the name of the family's honor.

In Pakistan, domestic violence leads to honor killings. Honor killings are a tradition of Pakistani society where the woman can be killed for "damaging" the family's "honor". Many honor killings have been committed against women who marry against their family's wishes, who seek divorce or who have been raped. Honor killings are still practiced in Pakistan. The majority of the victims are women and the punishments meted out against the murderers tend to be very lenient. The practice of summary killing of a person suspected of an illicit liaison is known as Karo Kari. Pakistan has witnessed an alarming increase in the menace of so-called honor killing cases during recent years.

Humanity Healing International, acting on behalf of the Grand Priory of Pakistan of the Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem will stand to help women in Pakistan end the practice of Honor Killings and shift the mindset of Pakistani society to one of gender equality. The Grand Priory's partner, Hope Development Organization, HDO, has been actively involved to uplift and support the marginalized Women groups of Pakistani society, for these last fourteen years. HDO has conducted several workshops on domestic violence and discrimination of Women's Rights with the women of the lower castes.

The Grand Priory of Pakistan and Humanity Healing International has partnered with Hope Development Organization to implement an advocacy campaign against the practice of Honor Killings by organizing and equipping women with the knowledge and tools needed for empowerment. 50 women in each of 10 targeted areas, making 500 total, will be selected and trained to be Women Community Agents, WCAs, to promote a community-based women empowerment system and activism to eliminate violence against women through active and bold involvement.

The initial training will be done in workshops that will give the WCAs more confidence and awareness about their rights and educate them about the laws for their protection, as well as possible solutions and plans of action.

Once the 10 WCA groups are trained, these 500 women will begin to work in their districts to educate other women of their rights and options through a public advocacy campaign consisting of press conferences, public rallies, and a signature campaign targeting the Pakistan National Assembly's Standing Committee Members and policy makers.

The United States Grand Priory of the Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem is pleased to announce that we have made a $1000.00 dollar donation to the Emily Shane Pass it Forward Foundation.

The Emily Shane Foundation is dedicated to promoting the ideals of Emily Rose Shane, who was kind to all, compassionate, empathic and eager to help anyone. The Emily Shane Foundation's SEA (Successful Educational Achievement) Program provides one on one mentoring twice a week to struggling middle school students, focusing on those with learning/processing issues. The Program targets those who could not otherwise afford this type of support and risk

"falling through the cracks". Middle school

is a key time in a child's life, where poor academic performance can lead to low self-esteem and be the cause

of drug use, skipping class, getting in with the wrong crowd, etc. We hope to act as a safety net, providing individualized help in all areas to enhance performance. This includes not only help with homework, test preparation and

assignments, but effectively teaching organizational skills. The mentors provide the student with tools and strategies to best overcome their particular challenges. They are like personal

coaches and cheerleaders; someone

the student can rely on to be there for them to help them achieve their best academic potential.

The only "cost" to the student is to participate in our Foundation's "PASS IT FORWARD" campaign. For every mentoring session, the student must perform any good deed or act of kindness and enter it on our website. We want to encourage a mindset of "giving back" and compassion for others. It is our youth that are the future; we hope our

program will set them on the right path for future success both academically and as meaningful members of society.

Thirteen-year-old Emily Rose Shane was killed by a suicidal driver on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu on April 3rd, 2010. This sudden and tragic loss compelled her family to create The Emily Shane Foundation as a way to honor her. Emily had a kind and giving nature; the Foundation's mission is to keep her spirit alive by helping others.

Emily Shane's parents are both members of our Order and are the recipients of the Companionate of Merit of the Order of Saint Lazarus. Emily's father, Michel Shane, is a film producer and co-founder of Hand Picked Films. He is best known for receiving an executive producer

credit on Catch Me If You Can and I, Robot along with his business partner Anthony Romano.

Charity is the giving, without expecting or receiving anything in return. Summary: Here in El Paso, Confrere Dr. Eliezer Ben-Joseph his wife Sandra and crew help provide loving support with charity to many different organizations. Currently we provide support to the following:

Hands of Love and Hope - Christ for Mexico, is an international organization which has dedicated itself to assisting the thousands of desperately poor, impoverished people who live in the colonias surrounding the border cities of Texas, New Mexico, and Juarez, Mexico. It's hard to imagine that anyone would call these impoverished "colonias" communities their home as most of the dwellings are cardboard or made of wooden pallets, yet such is the case for thousands of families here across the border or really across the street from El Paso Texas.

Celebrating its 49th year here in El Paso, Christ for Mexico Missions now feeds approximately 5,000 plus people per month, and when possible up to a 1,000 people per day. Confrere Dr. Eliezer Ben-Joseph and crew have helped raise money donations and building materials for 4 missions, a medical clinic, a kitchen, and much more. Yet the need is much greater.

Confrere Dr. Eliezer Ben-Joseph through the clinic and store here in El Paso, provide a daily drop off location and weekly pick up for donations for the ‘Hands of love and Hope’. There is a truck load of donations ranging from food staples, dry goods, caned items, clothing, money, toys, school supplies, water, and many other items for the children and as the mission needs.

Irma Valadez is the leader for this organization which has serviced Juarez for more than 49 years with the founder her mother ‘Sister Suzie Valadez’ having a calling to come to Juarez Mexico to help the poor. She was lovingly called the little Mother Teresa the ‘Saint of Juarez’. Irma has continued in the family tradition as the care of these many ‘children of the dump’, as they are called. They have striven through many hardships in continuing this assistance even with the drug wars, the murders, and the political structure of Mexico continuing to be in turmoil. With the constant threats of the corruption with the many groups in Juarez, Irma continued to strive forward with her work as being called of God.

SPOTLIGHT ON THE CALIFORNIA COMMANDERY

California Commander Andranik Yesayan CLJ… views his life of blessings and challenges like everyone else. Each day he endeavors to

live in peace with respect, loyalty, honesty and, most importantly, trust in his efforts to

improve the lives of his family, himself and others like you. Life has engineered a way to

teach him to “expect the unexpected” and learn to rise to everyday challenges.

Sports and Martial Arts have been a large part of his life since the tender age of 8. His hard

work and dedication led him to become a National, International and World Champion in

Japanese Traditional Martial Arts Karate in Fighting, Kata, Team Fighting and a

undefeated fighter in Kickboxing. He currently holds the record by 1st round Knockout in

35 seconds.

In 2012, he became Co-Founder, Chartering and Sponsoring Member of Glendale

Moonlight Rotary Club in Glendale, California. His participation in various charitable

fundraising events and support of the good works of several shelters have given him great

satisfaction knowing his efforts are fruitful.

Dame Karen Cantrell Eckert invited him to join the United States Grand Priory of

Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem as an officer in 2013. In 2014, he was

promoted to New Commander of California. As the appointed Commander of California,

his support of the Order has led to the establishment of a new Grand Priory of Armenia, in

Armenia where a New Commander of Armenia and 9 new Members(MLJ) and

Officers(OLJ) have been placed where they are currently in discussions to build our first

Apostolic Church of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem in Armenia and are also in the process of

recruiting 10 new members and officers for Glendale, California under California

Commandery. His many donations in the name of HOSLJ to Escencia Shelter in the city of

Glendale assisted in the genesis of a new humanitarian non-profit organization with the

involvement of the Order, City of Glendale and other organizations.
