From the President’s Desk . . .
Manage with Mind
I am very grateful to you all for your confidence in electing me as your President along with my distinguished executive committee members. I take this opportunity to thank the outgoing committee for their excellent performance during the previous term.
Today, I have the honour of being the President of one of the oldest and most reputed clubs in the region, which was established in 1964. I stand here humbled to pay tribute to the founder of the Toastmasters movement Dr. Ralph C. Smedley,
a movement which changed the lives of millions of people, Dr. Smedley once said, “The ability to approach an audience in a friendly style is partly a gift of nature and
partly a cultivated art”. We all know that Toastmasters is a non-profit organization with around 250,000 members in more than 90 countries around the world. This organization helps people develop their communication and leadership skills in a highly structured, friendly and supportive atmosphere.
We, the executive committee have chosen the slogan for the term as
“Manage With Mind, Motivate With Heart”. According to Henry Ford, “If you don’t think about the future, you won’t have one.” Therefore, people best at managing and motivating others are the ones who are the most conscious of what they’re doing. They are continuous thinkers, and their people appreciate them for it.
In this regard, I would like to share with you a short inspiring story on Mother’s day - A man stopped
at a flower shop to order some flowers to be wired to his mother who lived two hundred miles away. As he got out of his car he noticed a young girl sitting on the curb sobbing. He asked her what was wrong and she replied, "I wanted to buy a red rose for my mother. But I only have seventy-five cents, and a rose costs two dollars." The man smiled and said, "Come on in with me. I'll buy you a rose." He bought the little girl her rose and ordered his own mother's flowers. As they were leaving he offered the girl a ride home. She said, "Yes, please! You can take me to my mother." She directed him to a cemetery where she placed the rose on a freshly dug grave. The man returned to the flower shop, canceled the wire order, picked up a bouquet and drove the two hundred miles to his mother's house.
Dear all, this is the way we need to be, wise enough, optimally use our minds and motivational skills
for the enhancement of our club standard, but to a higher level of quality. On the other hand, without sharing acquired expertise to the various sectors of the society, our contribution to others will remain limited.
Consequently, this is what Toastmasters trains us in the importance of face-to-face communication.
Fellow TMs, once again I would like to thank you all for electing an enthusiastic, committed team of Toastmasters with whom I shall serve and strive to make our club rise to a higher level with your support.

Reading Corner... with Dr. I. Joel
In our Reading Corner we met with our ex-president Toastmaster Dr. I. Joel and we had the following conversation Q1. What kind of books do you like to read?
Mysteries, Thrillers, Historicals, and also some Management, Leadership and Self-help books.
Q2. How do you decide which books you will read?
This is hard to say, because I have a wide range of interests. But nowadays, as I have lesser time
than when I was younger, I only read the bestsellers, my favourite authors, and books that could help me in my profession.
Q3. What book are you reading now?
The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown
Q4. Who are your favourite authors?
Undoubtedly, the most favourite is Jeffery Archer. His story telling ability made me read all his books as each one got released. My first book by this author was Kane and Abel in 1983, when I just finished high school, and now I just completed his most recent book Paths of Glory, published in 2009. I hope he will live long to write more.
Jodi Picoult is a new author I started liking. But my favourites include John Grisham, Arthur Hailey, Alistair McClean, Agatha Christie, Fredrick Forsythe, Michael Crichton and Colin Forbes.
Q5. Is there any book that changes the way you look at the world or the way you live your life?
Yes. The Principle-Centred Leadership by Steven Covey, has changed by perspective on how one can be an effective leader. Though I tried - and still keep trying - to live as per that book, I must admit that it is very, very difficult.
Q6. Is there any book you have read more than once? Yes. The Great Indian Novel by Shashi Tharoor
Q7. Can you name book(s) that help your communication and leadership skills?
The Principle-Centred Leadership by Steven Covey
Q8. What does the word ‘reading’ mean to you? It helps us gain Knowledge and Wisdom. It makes us understand Pleasure and Pain.

My Writing …
The Value of Time To realize the value of ten years
ask two (spouses) recently divorced.
To realize the value of four years ask a person recently graduated from a university.
To realize the value of one year ask a student who failed in his final exam.
To realize the value of one month ask a lady who delivered her baby before the expected deadline.
To realize the value of one week ask an editor of a weekly newspaper.
To realize the value of one hour ask lovers waiting to meet each other.
To realize the value of one minute ask a person who missed a train, a bus or an airplane.
To realize the value of one second and to know the value of part of a second ask a person who had won silver medal in the Olympics,
remember that more often the difference between the gold medal and silver medals is the tiny parts of a second.
To realize the value of a friend
ask a person who lose one.
To realize the value of a sister ask a person who does not have sisters.
To realize the value of life ask about the feelings of a person on the death bed.
To realize the value of remembering God die and see what had you lost from your age being heedless.
Time never waits anyone, and every moment owned is wealth which need to be utilized more if shared with a distinguished person.

My Clipboard is My Security Blanket.
TM Claire Cosgrove
We each have our own comfort level when it comes to public speaking. But for some of us, we cling to some form of ‘security blanket’ when standing up front at a TM meeting. Why? For fear of the loss of the thought, a pre-mature senior moment, a forgotten expression that we have laboured over long and hard. As we develop our speaking skills, so will we develop our ability to relax and relate to the audience, recall the content, and deliver the speech in an appealing manner.
But until that moment comes, I cling to
my clipboard. Yet, when I speak on work related subjects, I can speak ad nauseam. I live, breathe and dream work. The challenge for me is to deliver a speech on a new and less familiar topic. And so I must set myself the challenge to put aside the clipboard, throw caution to the wind, and l earn to stand on my head. Well, perhaps not but at least rely on my grey cell matter.
So how will I confront the blank stares of the awaiting TM’s? What do they expect of me? Words of wisdoms? I think not. Let’s be real. Nor do they wish me to hide behind a 8”x12” clipboard that barely hides my face, let alone the rest of me. Nor do they wish me to kill my speech by reading it to them.
Remember, the audience has given me an opportunity to speak. They are ready, willing and waiting -without barbed teeth or concealed weapon. They will not shoot me down in my first paragraph. But they will reject my reading.
So, away with the clipboard, throw it overboard, like a life buoy jettisoned off the ocean liner. The message is – trust in
yourself and believe that you can do it. Why risk losing the opportunity to be
the best speaker. Free your hands, let the energy flow through your body, down your arms, through your fingertips out into the audience. By all means, brainstorm the topic, mindmap the speech, write it out on paper, massage and polish each choice word and phrase. Craft your speech so that it is pertinent and compelling, but don’t then strip it of its value. The word-for-word version is a preparation tool. Then progress to key thoughts, ideas or phrases. Relate the key points to images, visualize the speech, bury it in your inner being, let it grow within you. Then, present to the audience who will wait in great anticipation, reward you with rapt attention, and perhaps even extended applause.
But in defense of using one’s notes read
the Toastmaster magazine. There are occasions when one has little choice but to use notes such as, when presenting for an absentee speaker. Then, at the other end of the spectrum, persons such as top CEO executives and politicians do use notes. But these presenters must master the skills for reading presentations.

~RHYME TIME ~
TM Mohammed Al Salah
Ah-Counter
You seem to hesitate Or stop to meditate
Your pauses resonate But nevertheless
Please speak and educate
Some people think ahs are not so bad They do have a point, I will debate
But too many ahs is simply sad So try to aim for less than eight
Do watch out and pick you words Pace yourself, don't race the clock
Get less than 3 ahs; you can sing like birds Get more than 20 and we need to talk
My role tonight is to count "you knows"
And ums and oohs and ahs and ohs And I mean, and I mean, and I mean don't
repeat Keep your pauses short, keep your phrases neat
Timer Poetry
Time is a very funny friend We always try to race the clock
But time seems to win in the end We only hear tick-tock tick-tock A time tracker is my role tonight
So speak with care, and keep in sight The green, the red, and amber light
But still, relax and time it right If the green light shows, you still have time
So please proceed and keep your pace If the amber glows, it’s not a crime
If something red shines, I hope that’s not your face
You still get half-a-minute’s grace So the best of luck, and I won’t lie If you’re excited, then time will fly Take a deep breath, let out a sigh Smile and keep your spirits high
And if no one happens to be disqualified, you
can add at you end-of-meeting report:
Tonight, I simply cannot hide That no one was disqualified
In terms of time, you all did great So let me now evaluate . . .
Poetry is what
gets lost in

Signed, Sealed, Delivered – It’s Mine!
“The Subliminal Message” Hussain Sayed
What do you think the below picture represents? Of course, come on, it is just a snapshot of the famous Disney cartoon “The Lion King”:
Well, look closer and tell me what do you see now??????????
What we just saw is an effect of what is so called the “subliminal” Message.
What is it? A subliminal message is a signal or message embedded in another medium, designed to pass below the normal limits of the human mind's perception. These messages are unrecognizable by the conscious mind, but in certain situations can affect the subconscious mind and can negatively or positively influence subsequent later thoughts, behaviors, actions, attitudes, belief systems and value systems. The term
Manama Toastmasters
13 | H o r i z o n – S e p t e m b e r 2 0 0 9
subliminal means "beneath a limen“ (sensory threshold).
Effectiveness Have you ever wondered when you are maybe shopping, watching a film in the cinema or even surfing the net, want to do a specific thing (lets say, want to drink a specific brand) with no correlation with what were you doing? Dr Johan Karremans did a study: He put a group of people into 2 subgroups: Half of his participants were subliminally primed with Lipton Ice ("Lipton Ice" was repeatedly flashed on a computer screen for 24 milliseconds), while the other half was primed with a control that did not consist of a brand. Result? Those who were thirsty, wanted “Lipton Ice” when the experiment is over! Below are a couple of more messages (hidden ones!):
Can you see the Coca Cola???
Do you see the sign? Probably, it means let’s go there!
Criticism and future
Many legislations have banned subliminal ads in the media. Having said that, it is difficult to trace or prove its existence sometimes. Researches in this field of science is still going on with more promising findings for the future to be made.
Conclusion What are the motives of such hidden hypnotic messages? Who are responsible about them? Believe me friends; I am as dazzled as you are, if not more! The scary part about it, we have no control over it! But the good news, we can be aware of it as much as possible and why not using it to boost your productivity and positive thinking, automatically, instead of focusing on the undesired outcomes? I will leave the “how” part for our discussions
“If anything goes bad, I did it.
If anything goes semi-good, we did it.
If anything goes really good, then you did it.
That’s all it takes to get people to win football games for you.”

Food Therapy and its Magic
Pamela Birungi
.
Introduction
As humans we all share the same natural desires. For instance all of us want to live a
happy and healthy life free from any kind of disease. Indeed we all know that health and
life is something that should be treasured but how many times have we wavered in theory
and practice from this cherished belief? I tell you it is more than often.
Unfortunately, the model of today’s living seems to have taken a total grip on us that
we cannot even see the simplest things that make life healthier but rather we prefer to go
for the man-made sophisticated way of living in the name of being classy but ending up
living o antibiotics and painkillers or things that we could have prevented if we let nature
be. It is said that 90% of diseases suffered by humanity except for infections and
accidents are diet related and diet alone can offer a solution. We are what we eat is an
adage that is so common to peoples’ ears yet so easily forgotten during selection of foods
we eat.
Curative properties of selected foods:
If I start with the most basic of all: Water – I guess we all have heard the phrase
“Water is Life” but still how many of us spend days without taking a glass of water? It is
possible to live without food for several weeks but you can only go less than a week
without water. Among many others, water creates conducive conditions for proper
functioning of body cells, it regulates body temperature and it is a natural cleanser which
rids the body of chemical poisons. But how can we use water as medicine? This is how:
Taking it early morning
Warm water is a remedy for stress and mental fatigue and also some say it
subsidizes hot–temper!
Sitting in warm water relieves bladder disorders and cold water relieves stress and
insomnia
(lack of sleep)
Immersion of feet in warm water enhances blood circulation, remedy to nose
bleeding while cold water can help reduce headaches and relieve pain.
Steam inhalation – relieves nasal and lung congestion, headaches and irritations in
the throat.
Another magic food but often taken for granted is Ginger. The Chinese believe that
Ginger can cure over 20 diseases. For example, it relieves high blood pressure as it
reduces cholesterol, abdominal upsets, prevents nausea and vomiting when taken fresh,
heals flu and cough, headaches, works also as an appetizer. However it is not
recommended for persons suffering from ulcers.
Talking about Ulcers – what better way to get rid of those things than using cabbage.
With so many of us glued to bad eating habits, ulcers have become a common disorder,
and cabbage juice is highly recommended for treatment of this disorder. Cabbage has also
been proven to cure kidney diseases, healing wounds, it stimulates production of
antibodies and relieves indigestion.

Then there is the miracle bean – the Soya bean. Soya bean can be a perfect
replacement for meat as it also contains high level of proteins and it has many curative
properties unlike meat. It is good for treatment of diabetes, anaemia, skin disorders,
enhances treatment of measles in children and it is a first aid remedy for people who
have taken poison. That is; use four spoonfuls of soya floor in a glass of water and give
the person, thereafter seek medical advice.
And then there is the “carrot stick” – Carrots are popular for their ability to improve sight, but they have other uses like relieving cough, skin infections, constipation, cleaning the teeth and even serious diseases like cancer, hernia can be well managed by taking carrots in various forms.
How about the Orange – It is a very high vitamin C fruit and therefore a natural body cleanser.
Other medicinal qualities include: healing wounds, boosting the immune system, strengthens bones, and relieves coughs and colds. Orange juice is an excellent food in all types of fever.
The Avocado – The protein found in Avocado is the finest in quality and fruit is good in
the treatment of severe digestive disorders. It is a remedy for bad breath and far superior
to any mouth lotion or remedies for bad breath.
What about the tomato - Tomato is sour, relishing, an appetizer helps in digestion,
and is a blood purifier. It has curative effects in low-appetite, stomachache, controlling
excessive fat, and blood impurities. It also cures piles, weakness and fever. They are also
are proven to help with diabetes.Other important fruits include cucumber, Onions,
bananas- the sweet healer, Pineapple known for its body cleansing properties and they
say it enhances memory due to their composition of sugars. Many other fruits, vegetables
and grains do offer so many medicinal advantages, so let’s use them.
Conclusion:
Often when people here such speeches telling them to change their lifestyles; they
take the worst possible interpretation of such talks and in most cases will be bored by
them. But why do we choose to ignore the very basic things that nature gives us and
choose to live complicated lives? That is one mystery about humans that I would never
understand.
It is understandable that many of the foods described above would not taste the same as the yummy grilled steak from Chilles, but what is the point in satisfying your tastes bud for short-term feeling while creating long-term complications?
With so many diseases cropping up every day, isn’t it time we go back to the basics, like our
ancestors? After all, they lived much longer than us today! And it is because they used to have their food in its natural form.
Let us get into the habit of making food our first choice of non-emergency first aid treatment for
our minor medical needs and who knows maybe we not need first aid skills such CPR.
Note the author is not a medical practitioner but someone who strongly believes in good food.

“The book is an experience that allows you to witness your feelings without having to surrender to them, to succumb to them, or to be battered by them.
It gives you access to a deep knowledge of how you would respond to things you would never, thank goodness, have been required to experience.”
