© Van Tatenhove, 2013 Homophones & AAC Vocabulary Practice by Gail M. Van Tatenhove, PA, MS, CCCSLP Write or right? To, too, or two? There are many words in the English language that sound the same, but are spelled differently. These words are called homophones. There are many homophones in the English language; however, words selected for this visual support material are words that are included in the Unity® Minspeak® Application program. Thirtysix (36) pairs of homophones are included for Unity®144. Fewer pairs are available for Unity®84, 60, and 45. Students are encouraged to retrieve these words with their Unity® code rather than spelling the words. Homophone Visual Support Materials Print out the homophone flashcards that match the version of Unity® used by the student. (See the header to confirm page numbers.) o Unity®144 pages 2 through 7 o Unity®84 pages 8 through 12 o Unity®60 pages 13 through 16 o Unity®45 pages 17 through 20 Laminate and cut apart the cards. Ideas for using the flashcards: Print out the 2 copies of the flashcards for playing Sound Alike Concentration. Use pairs of homophones in a sentence. For example, “She ate eight things of pizza!” “I want to have two toys too.” Write out the sentences, leaving BLANKS for the homophones. Have the student fill in the correct homophone. Provide supports by using the flashcards in a word bank of options. To confirm vocabulary comprehension, use a pair of homophone flashcards, such as sun/son, and ask identifying questions, such as “Tell me which one is yellow and shines,” or “Say the one which is a person.”
