Christians for a United Community (CUC), First Baptist Church of Asheville and a family foundation are providing the leadership for building on the Dream, a house being constructed in the West End/ Clingman Avenue neighborhood on land donated by Pam and Jim Turner.

Celebrating the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr., Building on the Dream is bringing together volunteers of

An epic year is in the making at Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity. Special house building efforts are under way including a Building on the Dream initiative (a Habitat house in honor of the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.) at a downtown site and our first Women Build house since 1994.

The Enka Hills sub-division is coming along; the dedication of the first ten homes is scheduled for early June.

Our Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts will continue as we plan trips to build two houses in New Orleans this year. One of the houses is made possible through a major gift from John Cram, along with individual contributions designated for hurricane relief. We will also build a Habitat house in the Musician’s Village of New Orleans – a house sponsored with a portion of the proceeds from Warren Haynes’ 2006 Christmas Jam.

We are exploring the possibility of building houses in the east valley of Buncombe county. Board and staff members are searching for available building lots in the Black Mountain and Swannanoa communities.

In 2006 we started 19 houses! With a grant from CitiGroup Foundation, we hired two additional jobsite supervisors to increase our house building capacity. We need additional volunteers at the jobsite. Please consider joining us!

We are grateful for the support we receive from all of you - individuals, businesses, foundations, schools and faith communities. The Habitat model is unique. We could have all the volunteers in the world and no money; houses wouldn’t get built. We could have all the money in the world and no volunteers; houses wouldn’t get built.

The model only works because of you – our donors and our volunteers. With your partnership we can continue building safe, decent and affordable homes for qualified families.

P.S. In 2006 your support enabled an additional 14 families (20 adults and 36 children) to enjoy and appreciate the safety and pride of homeownership. Together we are hard at work building houses and changing lives.

New Partner Families

The Antyufeyeva family (pictured below) is delighted to be the partner family for this project that began on Valentine’s Day and is scheduled to be completed by Mother’s Day. Irina Antyufeyeva has worked as a CNA for the past three years and also has completed the Community Action Opportunities Life Works Program.

Irina has two sons – one in elementary school and one in middle school, and a daughter who hopes to attend college next year to study pre- pharmacy or pre-medicine. Irina and her children moved to Asheville five years ago after her husband passed away.

The Women Build project is spearheaded by a committee of women executives from Mission Hospitals. Funds to date have come from the Mission Hospitals Foundation, Lowe’s and personal contributions. The committee’s fundraising goal is $60,000. Women volunteers will contribute the 2,500 hours needed to build this house.

Please visit our website, www.ashevillehabitat.org to follow the progress of these builds.

WcQs and local banks Partner to build house

Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity (AAHH), WCQS, and ten area banks are partnering to build a house in the Enka Hills subdivision.

WCQS, Asheville’s local public radio station, and AAHH have created a unique and possibly first-of-a-kind model of collaboration to raise funds and build a house for a family in need.

The station and Habitat approached local banks to provide matching funds to Habitat during the WCQS fall fundraising drive. On a

designated day last October, contributors to the radio station had their donations matched with a donation to AAHH by area banks.

Ed Subkis, station general manager, and Lew Kraus, Habitat executive director, along with other staff, board members, and volunteers spent the day answering phones and talking on-air about the needs for both public radio and affordable housing in the area. Under the theme, “One Station, One Day, One House,” the WCQS challenge raised a one-day record $55,000 for the station and a matching $55,000 to build a Habitat house.

Beginning in late March employees of the partici-pating banks and WCQS will volunteer to build the house with Joel Downs, a former Bank of America employee who has been disabled since 1995.

Gordon Greenwood, president of the Bank of Asheville and president of the AAHH board of directors, provided leadership in recruiting the participating banks. Participating banks include:

Donations needed

Get a head start on your spring cleaning and help the Habitat Home Store!

While the Home Store staff is busy soliciting donations from our commercial

and institutional friends, we need individual donations as well. The Habitat Home Store

accepts housewares, furniture, tools, building supplies, antiques, and even boats, trucks and cars – so start that

spring cleaning early.

habitat home store & Ab tech Partner to Process computers

Starting in January, students enrolled in the Business Computer Technologies program at AB Tech began testing and readying computers for sale in the Habitat Home Store. AB Tech has graciously agreed to work this new program into the students’ class time.

Thanks go to Peter Kublickis, a new Habitat volunteer who assessed, sorted, recycled, and labeled donations; he tackled the work area itself making the set up logical and efficient! Peter came up with the idea for the AB Tech program and will manage it on an ongoing basis. This program should prove to be a “win” for all parties involved.

Auction update

Everyone who visits the Home Store notices our Silent Auction. A new auction starts every other Wednesday and includes unique donated items like the bedroom suite pictured at right.

Not everyone realizes what an important part of our business the Silent Auction has become. We have completed over 45 auctions and generated over $90,000 in revenue! This money helps fund the building of Habitat houses in Buncombe County.

Thanks to all the Habitat Home Store donors, dedicated volunteers and staff who make the silent auction a reality!

office

Currently a “regular” office volunteer, Pat clogston volunteered nearly full-time in 2006 to help Asheville Area Habitat update to a new, dynamic database management system. A computer professional before it was common for women to work in the IT field, Pat had the experi-ence we desperately needed. She established database standards, trained staff and volunteers, managed the migration of data from the old system to the new and docu-mented all the steps along the way. Pat continues to provide consultations two days a week. “In addition to valuable technical skills, Pat understands the importance of accurate database management. Her significant commitment of time and talent demonstrates her enthusiasm for Habitat’s mission. I have great respect, and of course appreciation, for her,” noted Joan Cooper, Asheville Area Habitat’s program director.

construction site

If you go to the jobsite in the dead of winter, you’ll easily identify Dick Allen – he’ll be the only person wearing shorts! Known to have worn long pants on only one occasion, Dick is one of our most loyal volunteers. Since 2003, this retired en-gineer has been helping on the Habitat jobsite 1-3 times each week; in 2006 alone Dick logged over 440 hours! With a background in safety, Dick spends some of his jobsite hours inspecting everything from extension cords to saws, helping to ensure all volunteers and staffers are working in safe conditions. “He does anything we ask him to and is just a really great guy. We truly enjoy his company and appre-ciate his hard work,” said Construction Manager Doug McLean.

susan haynes is to be credited for her work with the endless donations of books that the

Home Store receives. She sorts, prices and shelves the books. Since formally making books a focus area (summer 2006), Susan has helped the Home Store bring in more than $15,000 from book sales alone!

board of Directors

AAHH’s Board of Directors bid farewell to retiring board members Patrice vincent and John Davis. Patrice began as a volunteer in the Home Store in 1999 and joined the Board in 2002. John Davis has provided 15 years of leadership in our building program and business development. John continues to serve on the Finance and Property Management Committee.

We welcome newcomers: Dave bassett, representing East Valley, ellen carr and Paul Dismukes, working on fundraising and special projects, and maria roloff as human resource advisor and part of the Women Build committee.

five families home for the holidays

The first five families to move into the new Enka Hills subdivision received ceremonial keys on No-vember 30, 2006. The Gherasim, Seidman,

De la Paz, Hilty, and Holloway families accepted keys from their respec-tive house sponsors: The Grove Park Inn,

the Habitat Home Store, Keller Williams, Habitat Golf Tournament (Beverly Hanks & Associates and Parsec Financial Management) and the Interfaith

community. The families closed in mid-December and thoroughly enjoyed celebrating the holidays in their new homes.

music makes home ownership a reality for two more families

Although still awaiting official results, it is safe to say that the 2006 Warren Hayne’s Christmas Jam will fund two Habitat houses through the S&W Fund; one of the houses will be built in Buncombe county and the other in New Orleans’ Musician’s Village. With deep connections to New Orleans, Asheville Area Habitat’s announcement to send some of the proceeds and a work team to hurricane-ravaged Louisiana was music to Warren’s ears. To learn more about the Musician’s Village project, visit www.habitat-nola.org

While in town for the Christmas Jam, Warren met families that have benefited from his generosity. He also took time to talk with volunteers and tour a new house in the Enka Hills subdivision. Warren noted that the smiling faces of the partner families’ is what it is all about.

celebrating home store volunteers

A partner family connection, an interactive game show, a state of affairs message, great food and drink, and plenty of awards comprised the 2006

Home Store Volunteer Apprecia-tion Dinner held on December 14. Awards were given for top hours, five years of service, and ten

years of service. Volunteer managers and families who volunteer together were also recognized, as were three individu-als who received Manager’s Choice awards. Congratula-tions to all award re-cipients and thanks to all Home Store volunteers who help Habitat achieve its mission and families realize their dreams.

steve martinSteve Martin has worked in the construction field ‘all his life.’ He most recently worked in building materials at Lowe’s. Building Habitat houses and meeting Habitat families and volunteers has given Steve a sense of satisfaction that he has never felt before.

Kim charlesKim Charles has joined the Habitat Home Store staff; she is working in receiving with household items and linens. Kim enjoys backpacking and camping with the VW Bus Club. She is an avid gardener and vegetarian cook.

John meadowsJohn Meadows’ first house was a Lincoln Log Cabin he built when he was eight years old. After “careers” in skateboarding and surfing, he worked with a local contractor in Beaufort, NC. John came to Asheville via Warren-Wilson College and is happy to be building dreams for families. John is a member of First Presbyterian Church of Asheville where he serves as an Elder.

Kim o’DonnellKim O’Donnell first came to Asheville Area Habitat as a job site volunteer in October 2006. In March 2007, she joined the Habitat staff as the volunteer and events coordina-tor. She is thrilled to be a part of the Habitat community and looking forward to recruiting more volunteers to support our mission. Kim enjoys biking and spending time with her husband and three canine babies: Peanut, Mr. Chewy and Coquina.
