The Peak Academy - Home Learning Group: Skiddaw Date: 27 th April – Week 2 Subject: Art and Design Learning Outcome: · To show a clear journey through the AO’s in relation to the theme ‘Paper’ · Making connections with artists and my own work (AO1). · To explore a range of potential ideas, showing development (AO2). · To record in a variety of ways including clear annotation (AO3). · To make personal and informed decisions working towards an AO4 final outcome. Learning Task: Each of you have been working on your paper project and have been asked to send in photos of your completed work. You each have a copy of the ‘Altered book and illustration HWK’ task sheet (sent home in your work packs and emailed home twice) and should aim to have both of these tasks completed by the end of this term. All pictures for this should be sent to Miss Gay by the 20 th May so that I can assess them and feedback back This will allow the most appropriate and personalised work to be set. Paper Project: This week I am going to set you another paper exploration task. There are opportunities for you to explore sculpture, installations and photography. Remember photography is a type of media and a form of recording your work. Throughout these tasks make sure to complete annotation on your work, this includes how and why you did something. What you learnt or ideas you had by going through that process and any insights and intentions you might have developed. First – You are going to need paper (this can be any colour, shape, size, texture etc.) and string (thread of any kind). You may also wish to use scissors and glue, although they are not essential. You are going to create your own paper installation using manipulated paper in an abstract way. Do NOT do any research at this stage! NEXT – Watch the first video link below. Your installation is literally going to be made of various pieces of folded paper. You will fold paper and hand it somewhere in your house, from a curtain pole, down the stairs, in your bedroom etc. You should make comparisons between Val Britton’s installation ‘Cascade’ (link below) and your own work. Write a least a paragraph including what are the similarities and difference between her work and yours? What is your opinion of her work and why? What ideas do you get from it? This can be written by hand or typed on the computer but must be written in your own words. Your installation is one piece of work. There is no right or wrong outcome, remember this is an exploration or media and outcomes. THEN – Now you are going to explore it through photography. Use a camera or camera phone to take photographs from different viewpoints (from underneath, from above, close up, through bits of the installation). Also explore light and shadow, take photos of just the shadows cast from the installation, shine lights on it to create different effects or even move it to different locations. Could you hand it in your garden and see how it reacts to the wind and the movement of the sun, like a sundial? Your photographs are another piece of work. If you are able to, you could also edit some of your photographs, cropping, altering the brightness and contrast, adding filters etc. Make sure you save these as an additional image (original and edit), as this shows development (you could use your phones editing ability or

· To record in a variety of ways including clear annotation (AO3).

· To make personal and informed decisions working towards an AO4 final outcome.

Learning Task:

Each of you have been working on your paper project and have been asked to send in photos of your completed work. You each have a copy of the ‘Altered book and illustration HWK’ task sheet (sent home in your work packs and emailed home twice) and should aim to have both of these tasks completed by the end of this term. All pictures for this should be sent to Miss Gay by the 20th May so that I can assess them and feedback back This will allow the most appropriate and personalised work to be set.

Make sure you save these as an additional image (original and edit), as this shows development (you could use your phones editing ability or programs like PowerPoint on your computer). This would count as another piece of exploration.

FINALLY – Google the term ‘Paper Installations’, look at what already exists and make a list of all the things you like and dislike about them. You may wish to save some of the pictures for when we are back in school. Now design your own installation, do at least 3 A5 designs. What materials would you need and why (Be specific)? What are you going to do with the paper (roll, fold, scrunch etc.) Where would you like it to be located? Is it site specific or called it be installed in any location? How is it going to be installed? This is called idea development. Remember your ideas should be informed – this means making links to the work of others and including annotation of your ideas, insights and intentions.

Glossary:

Exploration - The action of exploring something unfamiliar (unknown), such as an artist, your ideas, media and techniques. A part of your learning journey.

Annotation - Written work that supports your art work. This can be notes, paragraphs, mind maps. It is a record of your thoughts, ideas and understanding, as well as explaining media and techniques used to create a piece.

Insights - The ability to show accurate and deep understanding of something (as well as expressing thoughts, ideas and opinions).

Installation – A construction or assembled group, usually designed for a specific space and temporary.

Key questions: Think about what and who we have covered in class before the school closure, as well as any new ideas that have come to mind.

What ideas do you have about paper?

What is an installation?

Does an installation have to use string?

Keep your answers and ideas written down (these can be mind maps, questions and answers, bullet points etc.), as they are part of your coursework and gain you marks.

Ways you can feedback: It is VITAL that you are taking photographs of your completed work and of key pieces in progress (images of you doing the work). They MUST then be sent to [email protected] so that Miss Gay can feedback and personalise your learning and next steps.
