HAIL AND FAREWELL

Do the math: teacher and mentor + colleague and friend + devoted wife and loving grandmother = Anne Vieira.

You might have seen her doing the Hokey Pokey with the little ones at St. Patrick or preparing young people to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Her own family is her heart. Regardless of the miles, Anne and Alex visited each new grandchild with love and joy.

After sixteen years with St. Augustine Church and the Catholic Student Center, Anne is retiring and moving to the Lone Star State. Her son is so thrilled, he has found his parents a home...not far from his.

We will miss you, Anne, but know you remain in our hearts and prayers.

Assuming the role of Coordinator of Religious Educa-tion is Sister Ana Galvan, whose energetic presence has en-livened our parish and student center since the arrival of the Mercedarian Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament in October 2015.

We say good-bye to Sister Teresa Gomez, who will be leaving us in July and returning to California to assist her congre-gation there. Sister Teresa has brought much energy and innova-tion to our parish community. We look forward to meeting Sister Rita.

Wilson Colmenares will complete his Pastoral Year in August and we are glad to see that he upheld the tradition of semi-narians loving the variety of assignments at our parish and student center.

We are pleased to welcome seminarian Chris Knight to our St. Augustine family this week.

All parishioners are invited to a reception honoring Anne Vieira,

on Sunday, June 12, 2016 at 3:00pm in the Lounge and to welcome new staff to our St. Augustine parish family.

Around the parish WEEK OF

June 5, 2016

NOTE the change in location

for the daily masses

June 6-10, 2016

The noon and 5:30pm daily Masses will be held in the Lounge.

The Holy Hours on Monday evening at 6:00 p.m., Wednes-day afternoon at 4:30 p.m. and Friday morning at 8:15 a.m. will be held in the Lounge.

Confession will be held each weekday at 4:30 p.m. in the back confessional in the church.

A Journey Through Scripture is a Bible study pro-gram designed by St. Paul Center to help Catholics grow in their knowledge of the Scriptures.

We will view a 12-part video series, “The Bible and the Virgin Mary” that beautifully explains the Catholic truths about Our Lady. A group discussion will follow. It is based upon Dr. Scott Hahn’s popular book, Hail Holy Queen.

If interested or if you have questions, please email [email protected]. The class will start Tuesday, June 7, from 10:15-11:15 a.m. in the Con-ference Room at St. Augustine’s.

CHOPPING AND STIRRING AND SO FORTH…

The parish continues to provide Monday dinners for the homeless at Grace Marketplace. If you want to help with food preparation, there is room for you on any of our four teams. Each team begins in mid-afternoon and dinner is served at 5:30. Each team works only one Monday a month. You need not know how to cook; just be ready to peel, chop, stir and in other ways help prepare the food. We now have a chef at Grace who works with us, so our work is great-ly simplified.

We also need people to show up at the Grace kitchen a little after 5 o'clock to serve the food. Servers are usu-ally finished by around 6:30.

Contact Bill at [email protected] or 378 4946 for more information about this gratifying vol-unteer opportunity.

STEWARDSHIP SPOTLIGHT - THE TENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Right now, for a while, like Jesus before he began his public ministry, St. Augustine’s is having a de-sert experience. Some of this is typical for this time of the year, and some of it is unique to things that are going on with our facilities. First, the University of Florida and Santa Fe College are in the summer A semes-ter, which is the first half of summer and has the lowest enrollment. As everyone knows, our parking lot is gone and will someday be resurrected as a garage, shopping, and apartment complex. We will regain our parking spaces in the garage as soon as it is completed, which is supposed to be before the commercial and residential space is constructed. Finally, the sanctuary renovation began last week, requiring some accom-modation for space. The renovation is supposed to be completed in July, so this is a much more temporary distraction with fewer hassles to parishioners. In any case, as a result of fewer students here for summer A, some parishioners deciding that the parking difficulties are too much to bear and (hopefully temporarily) leaving us for other parishes, and some who don’t like to worship in a church whose sanctuary is under renovation, our census is way down from usual levels. And this means that our offertory collection is way down from usual levels. Unfortunately, the costs of running the parish do not go down when fewer people show up for mass. Therefore, I am asking those of us who have chosen to stick it out through these difficult times to consider if we are doing all that we can to help support the parish. What can we do? First, register with the parish (and student center if you are a student). Go to www.catholicgators.org/parish-registration to do this. It is very simple. You have become part of our family in faith, so we’d like to know who you are and how we can help. For example, we send rare emails to registered parishioners, such as giving updates on the parking situation. Second, please sign on for online giving at www.catholicgators.org/make-a-donation. It is very easy, and there is no minimum contribution. This is especially important over the summer when people go on vacation. The parish still needs your support even while you’re gone. Finally, for those of us who are registered and give regularly, we should ask ourselves if we are truly giving thanks to God for all of his bless-ings to us, in part, through our offertory contributions. This desert experience for the parish is a good time for us to examine our contributions. To everyone reading this because you are sticking it out and attending mass at St. A’s, thank you for your support through your continued presence with us at mass your service to the parish, and your financial support.
