Home Mission: St. John's Chapel–––––––––––– by Ben Hagood, Home Missions Committee ––––––––––––

On Saturday, June 16, members of the Home Missions Committee and several other St. Philippians (Daniel Taylor-Cohart, Maxwell Steinhardt, Susan Lovell, and Guv, Tammy, and Lauren Gottshalk) assisted St. John's Chapel in its Holy Saturday Brunch outreach to residents of the East Side of Charleston. St. John's is a mission church of our diocese and reaches out to its community with a Holy Saturday Brunch twice a month. Members of St. John's walk the streets and visit nearby shelters to invite their neighbors to its Saturday meal. Volunteers and parishioners set up the sanctuary of St. John's to facilitate serving the midday meal to the guests. Guests are welcomed with prayers and a gospel message. Volunteers then help serve the meal and serve the tables where guests are seated. Members of St. Philip’s participated by praying with the St. John's team, setting up for meal service, greeting guests as they entered the sanctuary, serving the meals, and cleaning up afterwards. We were all genuinely filled with the joy that comes by serving others in the name of Jesus Christ.

The St. Philip’s Home Missions Committee will continue providing leadership for this partnership on the third Saturday of each month. All St. Philippians are welcome to come and participate. Five to ten volunteers are needed each Saturday and the time commitment is from approximately 10:00 a.m. to approximately 1:00 p.m. If you are interested in joining us on July 21 or August 18, or in the fall, please contact Ben Hagood at [email protected] or 843-709-9801. Come, serve, and join the fun!

GAFCON 2018: JerusalemGlobal Anglican Future Conference, June 17-22

By the Very Rev. Craige Borrett, Rector of Christ-St. Paul’s, Yonges Island

What an honor, privilege and blessing to be here in Jerusalem representing the Diocese of South Carolina. This gathering of some 2,000 faithful, Bible believing Anglicans from across the globe is very special. We gathered for our opening worship following the liturgy of the Anglican Church of Kenya. I’m not sure what was the most powerful moment – the Nigerian choir leading us in Swahili singing Hakuna Mungu kama wewe (There’s no one, there’s no one like Jesus), the entire gathering singing To God be the Glory and Nothing But the Blood of Jesus, the powerfully challenging words of Archbishop Nicholas Okoh (Primate of the Anglican Church of Nigeria and chairman of the GAFCON primates) who said, “the church never fits the mood of a particular age because it is made for all ages” and “if we walk together with those who deny the orthodox faith, in word or deed, we have agreed that orthodoxy is optional,” or praying the Lord’s Prayer together in a panoply of languages! It was an inspiring gathering to say the least. As a representative of our Diocese, though, I was humbled by the overwhelming awareness and concern for us. The gathering broke into small groups of eight for prayer during the morning session. My group had two Australians, a bishop and his wife from Uganda, and another from Nigeria. When I introduced myself from the Diocese of South Carolina, their first response was to share how much they have been praying for us. All across the globe, Anglicans are praying for us. How encouraging to be reminded how much a part of our global family we truly are.Our first day ended with a gathering of the Anglican Leadership Institute, founded by Bishop Lawrence, and led by the Rev Dr. Peter Moore.

The room was filled with leaders from across the globe who have attended one of the sessions, and several of those of us from South Carolina here in Jerusalem.
