Term 3 Week 10, 28th September 2017
Forty one students from Year 4 to Year 7 graduated from Children’s
University on Tuesday 19th September, in Bonython Hall at Adelaide
University. It was a wonderful celebration of the extra learning that
these students have completed throughout the year. Each student
received a certificate, professional photograph and a beautiful
Aboriginal Art book, donated by the Art Gallery. They even dressed
up in the cap and gown!
Having had such a wonderful experience we hope more students
will take part next year. Watch out for more Information coming
home with students during Term 4.

Digital Detox
If you listen to ABC Radio National at all, you would have heard promotions for the “Digital Detox” that
they have been running as part of the Life Matters program. The idea is that each week a new
challenge is set to help you assess your use of your mobile phone and decide whether it is something
you need to be more aware of. Prior to this program, a group of 6 and 7 year old primary school
students in Melbourne were interviewed about their parents’ mobile phone usage. Children this age
had a range of feelings when asked about how they felt when their parents were on the phone
including sad, angry and ignored. Dr Kate Highfield suggested that children this age didn’t always
understand what their parents were doing on their phones, particularly if it related to their work. Taking
the time to communicate with children about how and when a caregiver uses their phone can help to
clear up these sorts of misunderstandings. Dr Highfield proposed that setting up defined digital-free
time for the whole family would be a useful thing to do. In talking with families over the last little while
about this issue I have heard a range of strategies that different people use. Some have “screen free”
days once a week, some have “no screens when we eat / travel in the car / go on holidays together”
rules and others limit their own use of social media on their phones until after their children are in bed.
What would your children say about your mobile phone usage if they took part in this sort of survey?

During Week 8, a large number of students represented Golden Grove Primary
at this year's Festival of Music. For the first time in history it was staged at the
Adelaide Entertainment Centre (AEC) and involved students performing on the
largest stage that had ever been constructed for the AEC.
Congratulations to the following groups and individuals:
Wave Wanderers (tinikling group) performed in Concert 1
Senior Voices (choir) performed in Concert 4
Jarred played percussion in Concerts 2, 4 & 6
Alex acted and danced in Concerts 2, 4 & 6
Kye , Luke & Chloe were part of the drumming
spectacular in Concerts 2, 4 & 6
Ashleigh & Tatiana sang solos in
Concert 6
Although a full on week for many of our students they did us
proud and should be very happy with their accomplish-
ments. All students will be acknowledged formally at the
Performing Arts Showcase in Week 4 of next term.
Thank-you for all of the kind donations for ‘Backpacks 4 Kids’. We have received so many items that
will make a massive difference to so many children in Adelaide. Our 10 School Captains have been
very busy collecting the donations from the class rooms. Please remember the last day to send in
items is this Friday 29th September 2017.
Council Visit to HB6
On Wednesday 27th September HB6 was lucky enough to have Lucas Jones, the Deputy Mayor of
the city of Tea Tree Gully Council come into HB6 and tell us about the job of being a councillor and
deputy mayor. He met our class mayor and deputy Mahalia and Jamie. The students asked
interesting questions. Lucas explained council meetings and that the TTG Council provides skate
parks, footpaths and more. Everyone in the area pays rates each year that go towards these things
and more in the area. Lucas also told us that he doesn't like that some meetings go really late.
HB6 enjoyed having Lucas and everyone learnt something about being deputy mayor and part of a
local council.
