Term 2 Week 10, 5th July 2018
Dear Parents,
As our newsletter went to ‘print’ last week, we added the letter we
had just received from our Education Director announcing my
reappointment to the school. I am very happy to be continuing in
the role of Principal and greatly appreciate the lovely messages of
support I have received from staff, students and parents. It is a joy to
work at Golden Grove Primary School. Every day at this school brings
new opportunities, new challenges and new successes. I look
forward to all that we can achieve together in the years to come.
When we return to school in Term 3, we will welcome Jo Earl,
Principal of St Francis of Assisi, Christchurch to our school. Jo and I
have been selected to participate in a joint initiative of the New
Zealand Ministry for Education and the South Australia Department
for Education. As part of this initiative, Jo and I will spend four weeks
job-shadowing one another in our respective schools. Jo will be here
at GGPS for Weeks 1 – 4 and I will travel to Christchurch for the final
four weeks of the term. This is a great opportunity for both Jo and I to
engage in another school community and to bring new ideas and
thinking back to our schools and education systems.
Wishing you a safe and happy school holiday,
Kind regards, Wendy

These seminars are delivered by the Department for Education’s Positive Parenting Team
I have always had a great love of books and reading and as a result, I enjoy discovering new
words or seeing how the English language is constantly changing. There are new words
added to the dictionary, existing words whose meaning is changed and even words that are
swapped from nouns to verbs or adjectives. Sound too complicated for you already?! Don’t
worry, I’m not going to give you a complicated grammar lesson with a test at the end! There
is one new word that I’d love to talk about though, and that is the popular term “adulting.”
The word adult is a noun – an adult is a person. Adding on the “ing” ending turns it into a verb
– an action word, something that we do. Often the word adulting is used as a joke by young
people who are having a laugh about realizing that suddenly they are the grown-ups, having
to do adult things.
The truth of it is that adulting really is a hard thing to do! A debate I listened to recently by
various social science professionals put forward the idea that the emphasis on building up
children’s self-esteem, particularly giving kids lots of meaningless praise, has not been helpful
in the long term. They suggested that teaching the value of self-discipline has a much bigger
impact on a child’s future success, stability and well-being as an adult. It’s almost impossible
for us as parents to teach our children something that we don’t understand or practice
ourselves. If we don’t appreciate how important it is to learn to be responsible by doing the
right thing ourselves, then we can’t expect our kids to do that either. I’m not suggesting that
we have to be perfect adults in every given situation in order for our kids to turn out well,
however we all know what we are like better than anyone else and we are aware of the
areas that we need to work on to be better adults. What are some adulting things that you
could choose to improve on during the school holidays and into next term to be a better role
model for your kids? It might be having a goal to prepare for each day the night before so
your children can get to school on time, or setting aside a regular time to read together each
day. Obviously transition times in our lives make it hard to stick to disciplined schedules. If you
are in the middle of moving house or have a new baby or new job then you can cut yourself
some slack! For the rest of us, though – think about all the adulting you do, pat yourself on the
back if you are regularly doing the hard things and make sure to keep your sense of humour
active!

Starting a New School - The Perspective of Patrick and Kayden
It was difficult when I first got here and met the teacher, I was pretty nervous. I felt a bit more comfortable after I had a chat to my teacher and got shown around the school by some students in class. When I started school I said “hello” to some of the boys who looked friendly. I started hanging out with them and then gradually built a relationship with each of them. One thing I would say to new students is to be confident around your peers, it helps when you want to make friends. Patrick H.
When I found out I was starting a new school I felt very nervous. Before I started at my new school I was able to email the class to introduce myself and ask questions about the school. It helped me get to know everyone and for them to get to know me too, and that I’m a friendly person. When I first went into class I felt nervous because everyone was staring at me. After I said “hi” to someone, who I thought was friendly, they said “hi” back, then I felt less nervous. At recess time some students asked if I wanted to play with them, and asked what I would like to play. I said “chasey”. They were happy with that. If you are starting at a new school, don’t be scared or nervous because once you start, everyone will be friendly to you. Kayden H.
Defence Families - Relocation
Coming up in Term 3: Yrs 4-7 Defence students will be attending the Power Community’s Power to be Positive program, to be held at the Adelaide Oval on August 7th. This program will include mindset, goal setting and mindfulness activities that may help children if their family is relocating.
Defence families can be constantly on the move, some relocating every two years, which is an integral part
of military service. Defence Community Organisation (DCO) suggest a range of national programs and
support services that are available to support families, providing strategies to help them with managing this
mobile lifestyle. Starting a new school and making new friends is one of the hurdles that children have to
deal with when relocating.
Are you an ADF member going away on course, exercise or deployment? Let me know, so that extra support can be given to your child/children during your absence. Additionally, if you are willing to take one of the three peacekeeper bears with you, and share photos of your activities together with the school, please let me know.
Support for Defence families moving to a new location (DCO)
Making the move: The DCO website http://www.defence.gov.au/DCO/Family/Kids/Moving.asp
offers detailed information to guide families through the practical considerations and emotional impacts of a move.
Children in particular may need assistance to make sense of such a major change. Resources outline steps families can take to orchestrate the move effectively, minimise the disruption to the family’s life, integrate into the new community and make these experiences smooth, successful and positive for all involved.
To connect with DCO staff, call the Defence Family Helpline on 1800 624 608.
