“I first met David as a student in his Ancient Art Survey class at MSU-B. It changed my attitude towards art history as a whole. David’s enthusiasm for teaching was infectious. For the first time in my undergraduate studies I was truly excited about learning art history. He knew the subject matter in great detail, but what impressed me the most was his delivery. He is a very charismatic lecturer who literally brings the history of art to life. I was so affected by his teaching style and depth of knowledge that I took every seminar he taught.

David was, beyond a doubt, the most popular instructor in the art department. I credit him with my understanding of the creative process and with my decision to pursue a graduate degree and to choose art making as my life’s work. David taught me to look at art critically.

I have also worked alongside David in the sculpture studio. David works in a wide array of mediums, handling each with consummate skill. We have poured bronze and aluminum and have worked together in mold making cycles (ceramic shell, standard investment, plaster body molds, ect.). I regard him as an equal in the foundry. His finished pieces not only have a powerful aesthetic sensibility, they are also infused with a palpable presence of the holy.”

-Bentley Spang 1997

I have been privileged to teach many talented students. Bentley Spang is among the best. Since attending my classes at Montana State he has become a very successful international artist and spokesperson for young Native American artists. A piece he completed in one of my classes is now part of the permanent collection of the Eiteljorg Museum of Western Art in Indianapolis.
