JMSB FACULTY CONFERENCE UPDATES
Dr. Ying Chou Lin Dr. Han-Sheng Chen
Finance faculty Drs. Ying Chou Lin and Han-Sheng Chen recently
attended the Financial Management Association International (FMA)
2018 annual meeting in San Diego, CA, on October 10th to October
13th, 2018. FMA is the one of the largest finance organization in the
world, and its annual meeting provides great opportunities for
academicians interaction between and among practitioners around the
globe to promote the development and understanding of basic and
applied research, and to enhance the quality of finance education.
With their respective expertise in corporate finance and financial
derivatives, Dr. Lin and Dr. Chen discussed three most recent research
papers on those fields in the conference. In addition, Dr. Lin served as
a chair for one of the research sessions. They were also invited to
participate in several panel discussions to discuss how to apply

Dr. Rhonda Richards and Mr. Robert Howard, MBA attended the
Academy of Business Research Conference in San Antonio, Texas,
October 24th - 26th. The JMSB faculty presented an abstract on a study
of Ethics and MBA Students.
Dr. Rhonda Richards
The abstract to their study is below:
The purpose of the research study was to examine the ethical reasoning
skills of MBA students at an AACSB-accredited university located in
the state of Oklahoma. The researchers used Thorne’s (2001)
Accounting Ethical Dilemmas Instrument (AEDI) to measure the
participants’ ethical reasoning skills. The research design includes a
cross-sectional, quantitative study to test empirically the connection
between age, gender, marital status, and ethnicity in relation to one’s
ethical reasoning skills. The researchers plan to contribute by providing
insight regarding varying outside factors in predicting moral reasoning.
The findings of this research may be useful to educators, particularly
ones teaching in MBA programs, which may be examining effective
ethics instruction.

Dr. Luci Parmer attended the British Academy of Management Conference on
September 4th - 6th in Bristol, England United Kingdom. She presented a paper
on managerial leadership perceptions and power and facilitated a professional
development workshop on the challenges of teaching leadership courses and/or
workshops to mid-career professionals and students. A partial abstract to the
study is below.
Dr. Luci Parmer
Purpose - To examine the relationship between the perceptions employees have
regarding how they are treated in the workplace environment by their current or
most recent supervisor, and how this predicted their feelings of power within
themselves. The perceptions were measured utilizing the Managerial Leadership
Perceptions Questionnaire (MLPQ) created by Parmer (2017). Employee power was
measured utilizing the Power Instrument developed by Hinkin and Schriesheim
(1989) which stemmed from French and Raven’s (1959) five original bases of power
theory to include referent, expert, legitimate, reward, and coercive.
Design/methodology approach –The authors collected a sample of 199 participants
gathered from Amazon’s Mechanical Turk digital labor pool. Participants completed
a survey which measured their managerial perceptions, bases of power, and
demographic characteristics. Statistical analysis was used, including a factor
analysis, to explore the relationship between managerial perceptions, bases of
power, and demographic characteristics.
Findings – This study demonstrated there were significant findings between the
demographic associations and position power, managerial perceptions and personal
power, managerial perceptions and position power, and managerial leadership style
and power. No significant findings between the demographic associations and
personal power were found.

represented this past summer at The American Society of Safety
Professionals (ASSP) National Convention in San Antonio, Texas.
Dr. Chris W. Bradshaw, Chair of the department, presented research he
conducted with the assistance of student Bernie Underwood III, Dr. Hal
Poovey, and Mellena Nichols. He also set up a booth for recruitment
and was assisted at the booth by both Dr. Nick and Mellena Nichols of
whom both are full-time faculty. Mrs. Nichols, Sponsor for ASSP
Student Section, attended with the officers of the SE Student Section of
ASSP. She and the student officers were able to attend the conference
by raising money from various on-campus fundraisers and a gracious
donation by a safety alumnus. The annual national convention offers
attendees an opportunity to see the latest innovations in the safety

The Department of Occupational Safety and Health recently hosted its
annual semester Career Fair. This year’s fair was by far the biggest and
best. Eight different companies packed the OSH building in an effort to
scout out potential interns and new hires. Those in attendance included
Texas Instruments, Brandt Construction, Cadence McShane, Dal-tile,
Granite Construction, Hensel Phelps, McCarthy Construction, and
Northstar Builders Group. This departmental career fair was
implemented two semesters ago in response to the high demand by
companies for OSH students to fill positions and internships. The
response from both students and participating companies have been
exceedingly positive. Other companies that have recently been on
campus doing informational sessions and interviews include Amazon,
Barnard Construction, and ISN. Future companies planning to come
this semester include both CUDD Well Service and Halliburton Energy.
