Principal’s message
Year 12 The Year 12 trial HSC examinations are now complete
and our teachers are busily marking and providing
feedback to the students. I would very strongly
encourage the Year 12 students to continue with their
application and stay focussed and engaged. The
completion of the trial examinations does not mark a
finish line, merely an indication to begin the final sprint.
Please make use of any available resources as you
prepare for the culmination of your schooling
experience. We have plenty of avenues for support,
please make use of them. Our teachers are subject
matter experts, make use of their expertise and listen
to their advice.
Parent / Teacher Interviews I am looking forward to Thursday 20th September when
we will again host our Parent / Teacher Interviews. This
event will again provide an opportunity for parents to
seek feedback from teachers their child’s performance
and strategies for improvement. Please ensure that you
book an interview time between 3:30 and 6:30pm when
the interview sheet comes home in the coming weeks.
Year 11 Work Placement Last week also saw our Vocational Education and
Training (VET) students participate in work placement.
We offer a number of vocationally based courses in our
senior school; these include Hospitality, Metal and
Engineering, Construction, and Primary Industries. These
courses teach our students the skills they need to be able
to work in specific industries. One of the requirements of
the course is that the students spend a minimum of 70
hours practising their skills in a genuine workplace
environment. Last week many of our students took the
opportunity to experience the “real world”. I thank the
various employers who kindly looked after our students
and thank them also for their commitment to public
education.
Wellbeing Day Success On Thursday 23rd August, BHS held a wellbeing day for
students from years 7-12 with a variety of activities and
experiences on offer. We were lucky enough to secure
the services of “Project Empower:Country to Canberra”
who presented at BHS as part of their state-wide tour.
Their mission is to empower teenage girls in rural and
remote Australia to achieve their leadership potential.
We were also fortunate to secure the services of the
Odyssey program who ran interactive workshops
covering masculinity, mateship and positive
relationships with our boys. These sessions were
augmented with a variety of other locally sourced
resources including sessions on Smiling Minds, boot
camp exercise, Pilates, general car maintenance, food
preparation, medical health information, life skills. Thank
you to all those involved in the organisation,
preparation, supervising and running of all the events. I
especially thank local community members, Dr Dermott
Hurley, Em Azzopardi, Katrina Myers and Jenny Lodge
who so competently utilised their expertise to make the
day a fantastic success.
Ski trip A hearty welcome back to the intrepid thrill seekers who
spent a magical week in the snow last week. As we
expect, the feedback was extremely positive and student
behaviour was up to the usual exemplary Barham
standard. It is a very large and sometimes daunting
undertaking to take a group away (even when it is a
pleasurable trip to the mountains with the best snow for
years).

External Validation I recently had the opportunity to participate in the
external validation of a high school in the central west of
the state. Every year schools across NSW assess their
performance against the Schools Excellence Framework.
The framework consists of three domains of Teaching,
Learning and Leadership with each domain containing a
number of Elements including: Wellbeing, Assessment,
Effective Classroom Practice, Professional Standards,
and School Resources. Once in every five year cycle each
school is externally validated by a peer principal and a
senior executive from the Principal School Leadership
(PSL) team. In this process, schools nominate where they
position themselves against the Schools Excellence
Framework and provide evidence to support their
position, which is validated by the external team.
As the peer principal who was responsible for validating
the evidence set, I thoroughly enjoyed the learning
experience and the honour of being involved in this
reflective process. The school I validated undertook the
exercise with honesty, integrity and professionalism and
I thank them for allowing me into their school and be
part of their learning community for a short while.
I have a further two schools to validate this year, one
from the far north of the state and one on the central
coast. I look forward to engaging with these two school
communities immensely.

Wellbeing Day Our Wellbeing Day held last Thursday was a huge
success. Top presenters were brought in to deliver
valuable programs, which were complemented by
practical sessions including domestic skills, health
and fitness awareness, initiative games and basic
car maintenance.
Female students were fortunate enough to catch one of the workshops delivered by Project Empower: Country to Canberra. Barham High School was selected as one of the rural and remote schools the project would visit during the course of a four month road trip that aims to educate teenage girls about diversity, build self-esteem and encourage young women to embrace their leadership strengths.
The male students were treated to a guest
presenter, Joel Sloan, from the Odyssey program,
which is designed to help boys make the difficult
transition to manhood. Two workshops were
conducted; the first workshop looked at identity
and masculinity and addressed questions like when
does a boy become a man? And what are the
qualities that make up a healthy and responsible
man? The workshop challenged the boys to
redefine the social construction of masculinity,
power, success and mask wearing and to search for
new role models that can offer them alternate,
healthy qualities they might take on board. In the
second workshop the boys were encouraged to
redefine relationships, how they make us feel,
what are the rules and what they are not. They
challenged the social construction of gender by
looking at stereotypes, then exploring consent,
abuse, domestic violence, diversity and
homophobia. The workshops within this program
were highly engaging, informative and fun.
The Years 7 and 8 boys also spent time developing
some domestic skills by creating and eating wood-
fired pizzas and participating in games designed to
increase their initiative.
A visit from Dr Dermot Hurly, a basic car
maintenance practical session and a trip to the gym
rounded out the senior boys’ Wellbeing Day.
We had terrific ‘buy in’ from all students, staff and
presenters and we are extremely grateful to all
those that gave up time on a voluntary basis
including Katrina Myers, Dr Dermot Hurly and Chris
Bowen. The school, with the assistance of Sonya
Harrison, provided canteen vouchers to subsidise
any purchases made through the canteen on the
day. It was a real team effort from the staff of
Barham High School who were the glue that
allowed the day to run so smoothly. And the big
winners on the day were the students who were
both informed and inspired.
Ski Trip Last week was a huge week for staff, students and
parents who attended the ski trip to Thredbo. By
all accounts the recent snow falls provided
sensational skiing conditions and all had a fantastic
week. Congratulations and thanks to Ms Donnan
and Miss Edmunds for their organisation and
participation as well as to Paul Robinson and Glen
King-Gee for their support.
Science Week & Field Trips
Thanks to Miss Dennis who organised Science
Week activities last Wednesday.
This week has been a busy week for curricular
activities with fieldwork for Stage 5 photo/dig
students and all Stage 4 science students. Thanks
to Miss Sullivan, Mrs Farrant, Miss Dennis, Mrs
Snowdon and Miss Morton for the extra hours
spent on these activities.

Numeracy & Reading Tests Year 10 This Friday, Year 10 students will have the
opportunity to sit the practice tests for numeracy
and reading in the HSC Minimum Standard of
Literacy and Numeracy.
Senior School
The senior school is very quiet this week as Year 12
have trial HSC exams and quite a few Year 11 VET
students are completing their second block of work
placement. The end of Term 3 marks the end of both
Year 11 and Year 12 courses. Year 11 will have exams in
the final week of this term and will then commence
their respective Year 12 courses in Term 4. Year 12 will
have only 4 weeks of class time before the holidays and
final preparations for their HSC exams.
The Year 12 Final Assembly is set down for Friday
28th September from 10:15am at cluBarham.
Fathers’ Day Breakfast &
Footy Colours Day
Notes have gone home regarding our Fathers’ Day
Breakfast and Footy Colours Day next Friday 7th
September. It would be great to see a big roll up and
support for both of these events.
Parent/Teacher Interviews
Our Semester 2 Parent Teacher interviews have been
scheduled for Thursday 20th September from 3:30 pm to
6:30 pm. More information and booking sheets will
follow in the coming weeks.
Lost Property
As the weather gets warmer we are finding more
discarded jumpers around the playground following
breaks. Please make sure names are in jumpers and
coats as un-named articles of clothing build up in lost
property.

Project Empower
The Project Empower session for female students in
Years 7-12, was run by Hannah Wandell and the
Country to Canberra team. The session touched on
leadership, empowerment and developing a sense of
strong values. The feedback from students was
extremely positive, and we were very lucky to have the
opportunity to participate in this wonderful and
worthwhile program!

Stage 5 Poetry Arriving at the oval at 10 in the morning
The thought of losing is so daunting
We have to win the game
If we lose we are the only ones to blame
We jog out to warm up as a team
We, as the future of the club, have a high esteem
Time ticks over to eleven o’ seven
We go and face the opposition
The ball is held in the air
There are supporters everywhere
The siren sounds
And the ball grounds
We gain the centre clearance
Nice and clean without interference
As soon as you know it we are the first team to score
All we want is more
By the first term we have a fifty point lead
With so much greed
Half time we are up by ninety
We aren’t taking this game lightly
Third and fourth quarters pass by
Swan Hill give up and
sigh
Then we find out the news everyone thought was untrue
Woorinen have won by two
The last song of the year is a hard one
But that’s our season done.

And fall down into a palace
Where there’s everything
I would expect from myself
And my fears.

Week Bonanza at BHS!
On Friday September 17 Barham High School celebrated
Book Week with a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
theme.
Our awesome teachers dressed up in a range of
character costumes and the individual winner of the
Guess the Teachers’ Characters quiz was Imogen
O’Sullivan, with the group prize going to Year 12.
The winners of the Golden Ticket Elimination Prize were
Madi Eames and Leonard McClay who were rewarded
appropriately with Leonard’s height in chocolate.
Congratulations also to all winners of Year Group Prizes
for the Best Dressed Characters, Elizabeth Kelly (Year 7),
Albert Barnes (Year 8), Kalani Scoullar, Tatum Boyd and
Claudia Short (Year 9), Leonard McClay (Year 10), Mark
Barnes (Year 11) and Bridie Mathers (Year 12).
Our chocolatey celebrations were dedicated to the
memory of Roald Dahl. In particular, Leonard McClay’s
willing performance in the Frog in the Pond tiebreaker
will live in the communal memory for some time to
come.

TAS Report Stage 5 Industrial Tech Metal
Stage 5 Industrial Tech Metal today tested and
evaluated their camp BBQ’s that they have recently
completed. The students discussed design features
and flaws, cooking techniques, cleaning and fire
safety.
Year 6 Transition
During Week 6 we hosted the Year 6 Transition days for
our feeder schools - Barham Public, Koondrook PS,
Moulamein Public and Wakool/Burraboi Public with
over 40 students across the two days. The students
sampled classes in the timber workshop, science labs,
kitchen, ag plot and STEM MakerSpace.
Feedback from the students was very positive with
them thoroughly enjoying the Robotics session, where
they coded a robot to leave Earth, refuel at Mars and
complete a mission at Jupiter before heading back to
Earth with a fuel cell. An amazing experience as part of
the transition, where in yesteryear students would have
made scone cutters!
We look forward to hosting the students over a number
of days during Term 4.

Industrial Timber
The students have been busily working in the Timber
workshop on their projects for Term 3 with
candlesticks, spice racks, four jointed boxes and timber
joint display boards. We will have a large collection of
works to put into the show in October, with a number
of high quality pieces of work.
Year 8 STEM
The Year 8 STEM class has been busily working and
developing their understanding of volume this week.
The students predicted, tested and evaluated a number
of experiments as a lead in to further developing their
skills.
Year 8 Agriculture
The Year 8 Ag students have been busily preparing
seedlings for their vegetable beds as well as
germinating a number of flowers to be placed in garden
beds and pots around the school. Thank you very much
to Joy Eagle who donated a range of succulents to us as
well.

Miss Sullivan
On Wednesday the 29th of August, our Photography
students packed up their DSLR cameras and headed out
for a field trip down the main street and surrounds of
Barham. Students are starting a unit called ‘Architecture
vs Landscape’ and examined some of the local treasures
we have in Barham. It is truly amazing what you
discover when you are really looking at things you see
almost every day. These images will be layered and
manipulated in Photoshop as part of their assessment
for this unit. Stay tuned for more amazing photographs
to come.
Careers On Tuesday 4th of September, all Year 10 students will
participate in “Get That Job” day that will be held at
Barook Senior Citizens Hall in Koondrook. We are lucky
enough to have two guest speakers running this day,
which consists of practical and everyday advice about
applying for jobs, resumé and portfolio ideas and
presentation skills. It will be an invaluable day.
“Mock interviews” are coming up in Week 9 –
Wednesday 19th September. All Year 10 students will
participate in this program, which requires them to dress
in appropriate interview attire and attend an interview
for a “job” at a local business house. This is a wonderful
experience and one that we couldn’t do without the
support of local businesses.
The “Get that Job” and “Mock interviews” form the
assessment for this term.
In Term 4 the Year 10 students have the opportunity to
participate in a second block of work experience. This is
a fantastic opportunity and we strongly advise that all
Year 10 students participate.

Science Week
We celebrated another fabulous Science Week, with
our gang of nerds spending last Wednesday creating a
brochure about the awesome Science of the Gunbower
Forest. The studious young Scientists had their minds
blown with all the fun facts the forest has to offer. They
hope to complete their brochure in the near future for
distribution at local tourist hotspots and even plan to
create a social media platform to share their newly
gained knowledge. Watch this space, and thanks always
to our keen students for making Science Week a great
success!
Science Field Trip
On Thursday, Years 7 and 8 students headed out to the
Gunbower Forest for a fieldtrip. A great opportunity to
get some hands-on experience in the field, the students
got their hands dirty with soil and water testing, kept
their eyes peeled for a range of plants and animals, and
looked at human impacts on the forest. The students
were outstandingly well - behaved and were an
absolute delight to take out into the field.
