ANDREW FULLER Last week saw the visit of Andrew Fuller to Deniliquin High School. Monday afternoon Andrew worked with the staff of the school for the afternoon before hosting a community session in the evening. This community session was attended by around 70 people and focused on how parents can support and work with their teenage child. On the Tuesday Andrew then worked with students from years 6-11 with a focus on moving from stressed to strong and the development of a resilient mindset. The students found Andrew’s sessions engaging and they all walked away with a better understanding of themselves and how to look after their own mental health. DRIVER ED Another highly successful Driver Education program was run in week 7. This is a joint program between the school and the P&C Driver Education Committee and involves a large number of people from our local community. Across the week students were involved in a range of activities which started on the Monday morning with a mock accident which was run by the emergency services and highlighted how they respond to an accident. Students then followed the chain of command that would occur in the event of a road accident, from insurance agency and hospital, to the police station and then the court. At each place, students learnt what part each agency plays in processing a road accident. Students also were involved in a range of other activities including Teen Mental Health First Aid, basic mechanics, a practical driving session at the car club, a visit to Intereach and the opportunity to listen to guest speakers who have been impacted by road trauma. We also had Sacha Kaluri who spoke with the students and ran a community session on the Monday evening. This invaluable project would not run without the fantastic work of the Driver Education Committee and the many hours donated by members of our local community. A big thank you to all of those who played a role in the coordination and running of this week. PRESENTATION NIGHT Next Tuesday, 12 th December, will see our annual Presentation Night which will be held in the MPC starting at 7.30pm. It would be wonderful to see you all there to celebrate the fantastic achievements of our students. While you are there take the opportunity to purchase a raffle ticket in the P&C Christmas hamper. TRACEY PAGE After 5 ½ years in the role of Student Support Officer at Deniliquin High School Tracey Page is heading off to take on a new role in Wagga. This will allow her to be closer to family. I would like to thank Tracey for all of her work during her time here at the school and wish her all the best for her future, she will be missed by students and staff. The process to find a new student support officer will commence in the new year. SUPPORT CLASS NEWS This term in Science, the Support Class have been learning about the solar system. We have looked at the planets and stars and found out that the Sun is also a star. We made a model system out of styrofoam balls and a paper mache sun. We researched lots of interesting facts about the planets. Did you know that on Mercury, the sun sometimes rises twice in one day? We looked at some of the constellations and made our own; the Big Dipper, Little Dipper and Southern Cross were popular choices. We also made an experiment using balloons for rockets to see how far astronauts can fly!

DRIVER EDUCATION WEEK During Week 7, Year 10 students were involved in

the annual Driver Education Program. This is a

combined initiative of the PDHPE Faculty, in

conjunction with the Driver Education Sub-

Committee of the P&C. The one week intensive

program aims to make students better prepared for

the challenges that lay ahead of them as they gain

their licenses and become drivers.

Students took part in a variety of different sessions,

including a one day practical session at the Car

Club, witnessing the emergency services as they

dealt with a mock accident, and basic mechanical

procedures that students may need to be aware of

when owning a car. The students also toured the

many local services and organisations involved in

road trauma including the morgue, hospital,

insurance agency, court house and the new police

station. Keynote speaker Sacha Kaluri recalled to

students how road trauma impacted on her life,

while there was plenty of praise for guest speakers

John Maher and local Jamie Lowe.

Students who complete the one week program are

eligible for a FREE 1 hr driving lesson with local

instructor, Brian Purtill. This lesson is funded by the

P&C.

Thank you to the dedicated Driver Education Sub-

Committee and the many generous community

organisations that have contributed to this most

worthwhile program.

SIMON O’DONNELL SHIELD The Simon O’Donnell Shield was started about

10 years ago to give students from Years 7, 8 and 9 the opportunity to play cricket for the school. Each year we play two games of 15/15 over games between Deni, Barham, Finley and Hay High Schools. The winners from the first 2 games then play off in the Grand Final and the other two teams play a consolation match. This year Deni High played their first match against Finley High. After winning the toss DHS batted first and got off to an impressive start thanks to the Hillier brothers Harry 31, Kia 20 and Tom Bradley 28, eventually making a total of 106 off their 15 overs. In response Finley got off to a shaky start losing 3 quick wickets thanks to some great fielding from Charlie Dudley. But some late order hitting from the Finley batsman saw them fall only 10 runs short of DHS total. In the final DHS came up against Hay. Hay accounted for Barham in the first game with one student from Hay making 128 off the 15 overs. Hay won the toss and elected to bowl first keeping DHS to a relative small total of 97. The major contributor for the final was Darcy McManus making an impressive 27, Luke Rodda and Tom Cochrane both chipping in with 10 runs each. With the ball it all comes down to early wickets and DHS were lucky enough to dismiss the century maker from game one for just 5 runs caught behind by Tom McCallum off the bowling of Tom Bradley. After that it was all downhill. Hay eventually being bowled out for just 28 runs. Wickets were shared around Adrian Mulham, Tom Cochrane, Kia Hillier, Darcy McManus all taking one wicket, Harry Hiller 2 wickets and Tom Bradley 3. Well done DHS on winning back the Simon O’Donnell Shield.

CAREERS NEWS The Fish Park Project Year 10 and 11 students have been involved in the Fish Park Program which involved maintenance of the Lagoon System, water quality testing and the construction of two casting decks. The construction of these two decks has allowed students to learn invaluable skills such as planning, welding and construction techniques, under the guidance of Fish Park representative Ian Fisher. On Wednesday the 13

th December at 12 noon the official launch of

these casting decks will be celebrated with a BBQ, for which all members of the school community are invited to attend. The launch and BBQ will be held at the Whitelock Street Lagoon next to the TAFE. These students have done a wonderful job on the construction of the decks and have been exemplary representatives of the school. We look forward to celebrating this great community initiative with you all.

UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE - KWONG LEE DOW (KLD) YOUNG SCHOLARS PROGRAM 2018/2019 The KLD Young Scholars Program is an academic enrichment program designed to support high achieving Year 11 and Year 12 students. Congratulations is extended to all students who submitted an application for the KLD Young Scholars Program, they competed against over 1200 high achieving Year 10 students across Victoria and selected southern NSW schools. The University of Melbourne commended all of Deniliquin High’s applicants and were proud to announce, that for the first time since the program’s inception back in 2007, three students were bestowed the honour this year. The KLD Scholars for 2018/2019 are the delightful students pictured below; Lilli Free, Ben North and Amy Rodda. These three students will look forward to opportunities which will give them a taste of university life, the chance to meet and connect with other students like themselves, the opportunity to develop their leadership and community involvement skills and access to University of Melbourne resources, academics and events at the Parkville campus. Once again, well done and congratulations on a fantastic effort.

WHAT ARE EMPLOYERS LOOKING FOR? Over the upcoming extended holiday period, many students will find themselves seeking part-time (and even full-time) employment. The following are some of the most important attributes employers tell us they are looking for in a young employee.

A positive attitude and willingness to work

Motivation and enthusiasm

Being prepared to learn and take direction Employers are also seeking employees who are reliable and responsible, especially:

Punctual and dependable

Respectful to colleagues and customers

Loyal and staying in the job a reasonable period of time.

Employers also identified the importance of personal presentation, at the interview, and in the workplace. They were especially “off-put” by:

Inappropriate clothing

Untidy hair

Tattoos, piercings and “over the top” jewellery

WORK EXPERIENCE AT THE MINT Do you like money? Well who doesn’t? Would you like to make a lot of money…. really make money? Did you know that the all the coins that are in circulation in Australia are made at “The Mint” in Canberra. The Royal Australian Mint offers limited opportunities for Work Experience. You can see how Australia’s coins are made and even take part in their production. For details, see: https://www.ramint.gov.au/work-experience-mint On the matter of work experience, students in Year 9 should be investigating opportunities for placements now. The sooner you make enquiries the better your likelihood of securing the employer of your choice. We have a limited number of employers in Deniliquin and although they are exceedingly generous they can’t take you all. It really is the case of “first in best dressed!” We have ideas and contacts for adventurous students, please feel free to come into the Careers office for details.

GREAT VICTORIAN BIKE RIDE – 2017 On Saturday the 25

th of November, 16 students, 2

teachers and 5 adults set out for the 2017 Great Victorian Bike Ride. This year the Deni High students joined 3500 other riders on the Wilson’s Prom Ride’ for a week in another world. There was a bit of a hiccup with the bus trip as the Bus broke down about 3 hours from the Prom and another bus from Leongatha had to be arranged. Our volunteer bus driver Mr Bunt Atley did a fantastic job and we would like to THANK him and the Lang Lang Golf Club who looked after our crew for a couple of hours. The conditions for the first night weren’t the best with the rain pelting down on our camp, however we still managed to see a whale breaching and have a quick dip in the Tidal River. Over the period of 7 days, the Deni High team rode over 400km. The route for the 2017 ride is as follows: Day 1 - Travel to Wilson’s Prom Day 2 – Wilson’s Prom to Foster (60km) Day 3 – Foster to Yarram (66km) Day 4 – Yarram toSeaspray (90km) Day 5 – Seaspray to Bairnsdale (112km) Day 6 – REST DAY Day 7 – Bairnsdale to Maffra. (86km) Then the heavens opened and for the first time in GVBR history the ride was cancelled which meant we missed riding the last 2 days. Maffra Secondary College came to our rescue and let us camp in their school hall on the Friday night before we were picked up at lunchtime on Saturday by Vic Whittaker our bus driver from Deni. During the event, the riders camped in tents with the 3500 other riders and were well provided for by the catering organisations. On the rest day, the students enjoyed a movie in Bairnsdale and a swim in the river near our camp. Our students were praised by the Victorian Police who said “ we were the best school on the Ride”. The students represented the school to the highest level and received comments frequently on how well the students behaved and how valuable they were in helping their team and other riders on the road. They were excellent role models for their school and for Deniliquin. I would like to congratulate all students who participated in this years ride and strongly encourage them to participate in the 2018 Mountains to Murray Ride. The students and Alex and I would also like to thank the parents who attended the ride and their support during the 7 days. This years participants include: Billy Michael, Jack Michael, Ronan Waters, Charlie Waters, Jai Ezard, Edwina Barclay, Anna Young, Isabella Mcilwain, Cameron Crockart, Rachel Crockart, Ben North, James Aked, James Hood, Hayden Kelvy, Nathan Kelvy, Jack Richards, Carrie Kelvy, Col Hood, Sue Pitts, Lynda Barclay, Darren Young, Alex Glowrey and Sue Laing. Well done to the Great Victorian Bike Ride Team and we look forward to seeing you all again next year.
