Elizabeth is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music, where she studied flute with Gareth Morris and piano with Graeme Humphrey. Whilst at the RAM she performed regularly with all the orchestras, and was also engaged in many internal and external teaching projects, a subject that has always interested Elizabeth. International engagements have taken her to both the USA and to many parts of Europe, and she has performed extensively throughout the UK as soloist, recitalist and orchestral player. From 1987 to 1994, Elizabeth was principal flute with the Sinfonia of Scotland, Dundee Opera and Dundee and Perth Light Operatic Company which complimented her work for both ‘Travel Scotland’ and a busy teaching schedule. Elizabeth has recorded programmes for the Open University and other children’s programmes and gives Organ duo recitals with her husband.

Elizabeth has a broad and extensive teaching and performing career. She has successfully prepared pupils for scholarships to leading public schools, Junior Conservatoires and Specialist Music Schools and now has many ex-students working in the profession. Alan is an ABRSM Examiner, Organist & Choral Director and they have given numerous Duo Recitals together. One of Elizabeth’s main aims is to provide as many performing opportunities for all her pupils as possible and firmly believes that encouraging children to perform enhances and benefits all areas of their education. Elizabeth regards it an enormous privilege to sit on the Board of BIFF(British & International Federation of Festivals) Elizabeth herself is in much demand as an Adjudicator both at home and abroad.

In 2009 Elizabeth adjudicated in Sri Lanka and in 2010 she spent a month at the 62nd Hong Kong Schools Festival where she will be returning in 2013. In September 2010 she presented a presentation for an ISM Seminar about Musicale and its role in the community and in October 2010 she was invited to undertake some teaching and performing work at the Conservatoire in Nairobi. Elizabeth is also a full member of the ISM, a committee member of the Hitchin Festival of the Arts and in any spare time that exists enjoys cookery and literature. PLATFORM PRESENTATION

A festival is an occasion when you want to do your best in every way, and platform deportment is a very important part of your performance. Performers can greatly add to the enjoyment of sessions by a pleasing and relaxed appearance. A performer who is at ease on the platform puts the audience at ease.

A performer who has made the effort to prepare work should use care and thought when selecting clothes to wear at the performance. Smart dress is a courtesy to the audience and flamboyant or very casual clothes should be avoided. Skirts always looks shorter on a platform so it may be more appropriate to wear a longer skirt. Female cellists and guitarists may find trousers more comfortable than skirts. Expensive clothes are not necessary.

Instruments should have been tuned prior to the class, so that only minor adjustment is required on the platform. When a music stand is used it should be placed so that it does not obscure the audience’s view of your playing. When performers play an “Own Choice” piece they will be asked to announce to the audience what they will be performing.

A performance starts before the first note, and finishes after the last one. Wait quietly until the adjudicator is ready, taking a few deep breaths, so that you begin your performance feeling comfortable. A slight bow to the adjudicator and audience at the end is a courtesy, and rounds off your performance (don’t forget to acknowledge the accompanist, if you are using one). Leave the platform without hurrying. If you are called up to receive a prize, shake hands with the presenter before taking it.

Attention to these points helps a great deal in developing a higher standard of amateur public performance.

HOLYWOOD MUSIC FESTIVAL SAFEGUARDING POLICY STATEMENT 2011 1

PURPOSE AND FUNCTION OF ORGANISATION: Holywood Music Festival, in the full meaning of The Children Act 1999, is not a Child-Care Organisation. It is, however, committed to practice which protects children from harm. The festival is established to provide a platform for amateur performance combined with an educational element from professional musicians. It is established to encourage people, but not exclusively the young, to become actively involved in such activities. Our aim is also to promote and develop the arts for the benefit of the general public in the area of benefit, to encourage appreciation of music and stimulate the artistic creativity of people in the area of benefit and to promote, organise and manage a festival of music. Within the document, the word “staff” refers to officers and members of the Festival committee who give of their time entirely voluntarily. The term “volunteers” refers to additional people who assist the Festival committee members with running the festival, who also give of their time entirely voluntarily.

2 THE FESTIVAL ENVIRONMENT: The festival is normally held in The Queen’s Hall, Holywood or local venues within the Holywood town area. It is our policy to involve and inform parents/guardians/carers and teachers in partnership with ourselves in order to ensure, as far as reasonably practicable, a safe environment at the festival which is run by volunteers. With the exception of teachers, there is an entrance charge for all adults accompanying children to the festival. As the festival is held in a public area, the festival volunteers cannot be held responsible for the care or safety of children whilst they are away from the supervised areas where classes are held.

3 TO WHOM THIS POLICY APPLIES: This policy relates to children under the age of 18 years and those vulnerable adults of any age who are identified to the organisers prior to their arrival at the festival. This should be done by contacting the designated officer/s at the address or telephone number at the bottom of this document. In recognising the needs of children from minority ethnic groups and children who are disabled, the festival actively seeks to meet needs notified to the festival by parents/guardians/carers and/or teachers.

4 FESTIVAL PERSONNEL: Staff vacancies are filled at the Annual General Meeting on the recommendation of the committee members. Volunteers are recruited from the teaching profession, from local churches and organisations. They are also recruited by personal contact and recommendation from existing volunteers. Volunteers are made fully aware of the policy and receive instructions as how best to implement the policy. The festival has appointed a Safeguarding Designated Officer whose name appears below. This officer will be responsible for the checking and maintenance of volunteer’s records. During the Festival, all staff and volunteers wear identifying badges. Anyone wearing a badge can be approached and will be able to direct you to someone who will deal with your problem. The Designated Officer will be in attendance throughout the Festival. We take every problem seriously. In the event of any incident, this will be fully documented and dated.

5 ATTENDANCE AT THE FESTIVAL: This policy is passed to all parents/guardians and carers in order to inform them that, where they are not attending with their children, it is their responsibility to ensure that their children are adequately supervised at the festival by adults acting on their behalf. It is passed to parents directly, or via teachers, in time for them to make arrangements for their children to be supervised when attending the festival. Teachers are expected to take responsibility for seeing that parents or carers

of their pupils are aware of this policy and to inform the festival organisers that they accept the responsibility. A copy of this policy appears in the programme and at the festival venue.

6. PERFORMANCE AREAS AND REHEARSAL AREAS: As the Festival is held in a public area, parents/guardians/carers should be aware that, due to the location of the separate performance areas within the festival venue, it may be necessary, from time to time, for children to pass through or attend unsupervised areas such as the foyer, public toilets. It will be the responsibility of those parents/guardians/carers to ensure that children in their care are accompanied at all times, whilst away from the supervised performance areas.

7 PHOTOGRAPHS, VIDEOTAPES AND PRESS PHOTOGRAPHY: It is our policy that no recording, other than photography by accredited photographers, will be permitted within the performance areas and signs to this effect will be clearly displayed. Volunteers and staff who are on duty have been instructed to prevent an unauthorised recording, should this be attempted. Press have been invited to take photographs and if you do not wish your child to be photographed then you must let the photographer know. When the concept of a signed song section was first proposed to the Festival Committee it was inspired by the performances of members within the deaf community. It was felt that here was an activity that not only celebrated the diversity of the wider community but one which could also use the platform of the Holywood Festival to encourage inclusivity.

This section represents different challenges for different entrants. For a hearing entrant, not trained in sign language, learning and executing appropriate signs to pass adjudication by an expert in the field. For the non-hearing entrant it is the challenge of coordinating signs with the song.

Signed Song also provides the opportunity for collaboration between hearing and deaf competitors. It is the intention of Holywood Music Festival to celebrate signed song as an art form and to promote its rigor and acceptability in a festival setting. It is also hoped that this section will provide networking opportunities for members of the wider community

Signed Song will be performed with music on backing track/live. The adjudication will take into consideration the signing, musicality, meaning and emotion portrayed by the overall performance.

The adjudicator will be looking for clear and intelligible interpretation of lyrics: suitable expressions of emotion, musicality (rhythm, volume, mood), use of, and respect for, sign language. All choirs will also be judged on their ensemble – how they look and perform as a group.
