GREETINGS FROM FR . DAVE
This weekend we welcome Andy Noethe to the parish to speak to us about a ministry Holy Trinity is going to be partnering with. Please see the center pages of this bulletin for a full description of L’Arche and the opportunities for us to participate.
As I have explained before, our former Ministry House is the new L’Arche Westside location and we look forward to welcoming community members to our parish. Andy is available after all our Masses to answer questions and will be hosting an informational gathering in our Fireside Rooms on Saturday, August 3rd from 10:00-11:00am. Also, parishioner Maria Menor will serve as our “liaison” and local contact for L’Arche going forward — you can email her at [email protected]. Our response to the invitation for young folks to share in our music ministry is awesome. The workshop Ken and Mark hosted last weekend had 18 of our young folks participating. We extend an ongoing invitation to any of our youth, 6th grade and older, to come Wednesday evenings at 6:00pm for continued coaching in ways of supporting our liturgy with music.
This weekend, we have a wonderful group of our High School students up in Spokane for the annual Steubenville NW conference. We have participated for the past 9 years in this and find it provides some great inspiration for our young folks and good leadership formation. Please be praying for them! Blessings to Emery Lau, Emmet Lau, Amira Molo, Evelyn O’Connell, and Elenora Shamoon, who were baptized this weekend! Congratulations to Channa Kim and Charlie Southwick, who were married here on July 26th, and to Alyssa Walker and AJ Fazio, who were married here on July 27th. Blessings to the four of you, and to all of our married and engaged couples! Last week, funeral services were held for Marquita Johnson. Funeral services are scheduled for Danilo (Danny) Allida on Monday, July 29th at 10:00am, and for Hermadi Somadi on Tuesday, July 30th at 11:00am. May their souls and all the souls of the faithful departed, rest in peace.

Let’s head out to a ball game, HT Parishioners!
Join Dustin, our seminarian intern, as he takes in a Hillsboro Hops baseball game at Ron Tonkin Field (4460 NE Century Blvd., Hillsboro) before he returns to Rome for his studies. He’d love to have some company on Sunday, August 18th as our Hops take on Washington’s Tri-City Dust Devils! Tickets will be purchased at the game — meet Dustin at the Ticket Office at 3:30pm.
Be sure to contact Dustin ([email protected]) if you plan on coming (families and kids are especially invited, as kids ages 3–12 will get a chance to run the bases!) and for more details.
Hello, everyone. As Fr. Dave mentioned, we have Andy Noethe from L’Arche Portland with us this weekend. We received some exciting news a couple weeks ago from the Archdiocese related to L’Arche and our partnership with them, and this weekend seemed the perfect time to share it with you! From Matt Cato, Director of the Office of Life, Justice & Peace for the Archdiocese of Portland and the Diocesan Director of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD):
“The Archdiocese of Portland is pleased to announce that L'Arche Portland was awarded a $3,000 grant from the Catholic Campaign for Human Development to assist in the program expenses of the continued expansion of L'Arche Portland in to Beaverton. Holy Trinity sold L'Arche Portland the new Beaverton house and has been an ongoing partner by providing space in their building for retreats and L'Arche-Westside gatherings, and providing volunteer support for the renovation of the house.
L'Arche is about nurturing relationships between individuals with and without intellectual disabilities. Holy Trinity recommended L'Arche Portland for this grant.”
Congratulations to L’Arche for being awarded this grant!
BRETT ’S TWO CENTS
Holy Trinity Welcomes
L’Arche PortlandL’Arche is a worldwide movement where people with and without intellectual disabilities are transformed by working together to create home, share life, and build community. Those with intellectual disabilities form the heart of L’Arche communities and invite others into relationships of mutuality. L’Arche welcomes and celebrates people of all backgrounds in their journeys of faith and conscience to find connection and belonging. L’Arche was founded by Jean Vanier in France, became widely known through the writings of Henri Nouwen, and was established in Portland in 1987.

Last year, Holy Trinity approached L’Arche Portland about the possibility of acquiring its Ministry House, which had previously served refugee families and homeless families. Understanding its proximity to the dynamic community at Holy Trinity that would support such a home, L’Arche Portland said yes. The past year, we have been preparing for a new type of L’Arche home (not based on 24-hour residential care) and establishing a new circle of friends via monthly gatherings.
As leaders in the worldwide L’Arche movement, L’Arche Portland seeks to empower people with intellectual disabilities to a fuller voice and leadership in our community and society. With this purpose in mind, we are committed to innovative practices and new models of sharing life. As we welcome difference and invite creative growth, we remain centered in a spirit of hospitality and belonging.
L’Arche Portland recently opened applications for people with and without intellectual disabilities to share life in its homes. Please help us identify and welcome the people who will establish Beaverton’s first L’Arche home.

L’Arche Portland has two homes in SE Portland and one home in Beaverton where people with and without intellectual disabilities share life and build community together.
L’Arche homes do not exist in isolation. They rely upon the relationships with a wider circle of friends that gather inside and outside of the homes for prayer nights, dinners, outings, and celebrations.
Applications for people with and without intellectual disabilities who are interested in living in our homes are now available upon request.
More than a job, being a L’Arche assistant is an experience and adventure that will benefit you for the rest of your life, changing your outlook on life and on human relationships.
The friendships formed are genuine, mutual, and special.Beyond your role as a direct support professional, you are a housemate and community member with those with disabilities.
We are currently hiring live-in and live-out assistants for our Eastside homes, and will soon be hiring Community Inclusion Assistants in Beaverton to support people beyond our homes.

NUMBER OF PEOPLE SERVED
One of the many things that I truly enjoy about the Food Closet and the Outreach Ministry is meeting and talking with the multitude of people we are blessed to serve. Like you and me, each has their own rich story. Some, like you and me, prefer to keep the details to themselves; others love to share. I always find it interesting when they do. All are people, just like you and me.
Recently one of the people we were serving wanted me to know that, while he had been to many pantries over the years, Holy Trinity was the absolute best! From the environment being bright and cheerful; to the variety of food choices that are available; to the incredible volunteers who come with a smile on their face and compassion in their heart; all make a huge difference. Currently we could use a few more volunteers to help with this ministry. If you are able to stand on your feet for up to four hours at a time AND can lift up to 10 pounds AND you are available either Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday mornings between 9:30am and 1:00pm you might qualify. Please contact me for more information. Remember, the pay is HEAVENLY!!!
It has also been awhile since I mentioned the Random Angels ministry. I occasionally receive a request for something that I have no available resource for. The request might require a special talent, maybe just a little time and, yes, sometimes funding. In any case, by adding your email address to my list you will get notified when, and only when, a need arises. If you can help with that particular request you respond; if you cannot, no action is required. The idea is that you help how you can, when you can. If you are interested in becoming a Random Angel, please email me with your desire to join. I will let you know once I have added you.
Finally, we all know our beloved Deacon Brett likes to share his extraordinary wit with us from time-to-time. While I could never compete with him I thought I would share one that my granddaughter passed to me:
“Why do math books always look so sad?” “Because they have so many problems.”
Climate Change is a reality and we can make a difference!
Tip # 5 — Vote for our planet
One of the greatest obstacles the planet must overcome is political indifference or ignorance on the subject of global warming. Governments everywhere have the power to implement policies and regulations that will help to avert the worse impacts of a warming planet.
In preparing for the next election, it is vital to be informed on candidates’ climate policy. Without protections for our earth, there will be no need for other types of policy. The standoff over Oregon’s climate bill is distressing, but the partisan gridlock provides a valuable lesson when it comes to climate solutions: they must be bipartisan.
The U.S. House Climate Solutions Caucus is a bipartisan group of legislators that work to educate fellow members on economically-viable options to reduce climate risk and explore bipartisan policy options that address the impacts, causes, and challenges of our changing climate. Encourage your representative to participate in this Caucus (if they aren’t already!) — visit citizensclimatelobby.org/climate-solutions-caucus to learn more.

F AITH FORMATION & E DUCATION
FAITH FORMATION
Amazing Grace – A Vocabulary of Faith is one of my beloved books by one of my favorite Benedictine authors, Kathleen Norris. As the title says, its chapters are short ponderings and reflections on some unexpected vocabulary words that expand the notion of what faith is. Thought-provoking and delightful to read, I continue to reread its chapters to access its pithy wisdom. Imagine these individual chapters — “God,” “Bible,” and “Prayer” (Well so far, nothing out of the ordinary); “Salvation,” “Detachment,” “Perfection,” “Repentance,” and three different chapters on Conversion; “Belief,” “Doubt,” and
“Sacred Ambiguity” — all of which become a holy reading that is poetic and genuine in its depiction, worth reading and rereading for access to its intelligence and grace. Get it at the library or buy a used copy on Amazon. To quote from a chapter titled “Antichrist”: “What the pastor said was so simple that it will remain with me forever. ‘Each one of us acts as an Antichrist,’ he said, ‘whenever we hear the gospel and do not do it.’”
May these days of summer afford us with reading that expands our thoughts to God! Have a great week everybody! Here’s to some Holy Reading! +
