Brian Spegele’s article in the Wall Street Journal underlines his experiences attending “house churches” in China. This is amid an intensified crackdown from the Chinese government on the country’s underground Christian churches. According the Spegele, Christians across China have begun to push back against government persecution. Some have called for legal recognition of the churches by the Chinese government in efforts to emerge from underground. This is in addition to the unfunded nature of groups such as Mr. Zhang’s House Church Alliance, which has been “left behind by the country’s newfound economic power.”

Spegele writes that the government would not oppose much of what Pastor Jin of Zion Church says, as he speaks a lot about morals and family with the occasional biblical story to explain Chinese politics. However, Christians such as Mr. Zhang and Pastor Jin are at risk of being detained by the Chinese government for stepping out of line. In response to the lack of Christians involved in Chinese politics, Mr. Jin told the people to believe that God will be with them, and to think of their sons and daughters. It remains to be seen if or when the Chinese government will warm up to the growth of Christianity in China–let alone that within its own government.

According to an article out of the New York Times, the Final Harry Potter film has been one long awaited, literally. Matt Flegenheimer described a crowd of “caped wand-wielders” lining up to see a midnight showing. Fans began to arrive as early as 9:00pm and “encircled a city block.” What for many, which has spanned the stretch of 13 years since the first Potter film was released, will come to a close with much fanfare. According to Flegenheimer, a now 23-year old Mily Mena saw the first Potter film at 11 years old. Now that the saga has ended, Mena feels that the “real world” is calling, in which she has to, “like, find a job.” Adults and Teens alike Flock to Theaters for a Midnight

An article by Allie Townsend from Time underlines the finale of the Harry Potter film series and the “hundreds of people...standing in line to see a boy with a stick.”

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 drew crowds filled with teens and early 20-something year olds in what Townsend calls a “Potter pilgrimage.” According to Townsend, Dana Walsh became a fan later than most her age due to the fact that she was not allowed to read the Potter books as a child. Despite Walsh’s mother once believing Harry Potter was evil, she later concluded that the books “didn’t have anything to do with the devil.”

The next film in the Twilight Saga has stores like Hot Topic stocking the latest clothing and accessories to go with the film. Mostly targeted towards teens, Hot Topic store windows are now filled “with heartwarming displays of the undead” to commemorate the film’s release. Dave Itzkoff of the New York Times ArtsBeat highlights the impact the film has had on businesses like Hot Topic. What Itzkoff calls the “most beloved cinematic vampire-werewolf-human love triangle since Casablanca,” the Eclipse film has influenced pop-culture and fashion in more ways than one. Stephanie Rosenbloom of the New York Times Fashion and Style covers a story of love, which spawned from a fantasy multiplayer video game over the internet.

According to Rosenbloom, one kill in World of Warcraft went a long way. In a multiplayer level, Tamara Langman, or her avatar Arixi Fizzlebolt, assisted John Bentley, aka Weulfgar McDoal, in defeating “the yellow-eyed demon known as Prince Malchezzar.” This is what led to friendship and later a relationship between Langman and Bentley. World Warcraft also allows gamers to have conversions via an instant messenging feature where Langman and Bentley discussed life outside of their fantasy world in Warcraft. According to the article, “Ms. Langman realized that while she was in the fictional world of Azeroth, she was also on a date.” The two have since met in person and have continued their relationship for two years, which Rosenbloom says is hardly a new concept with online gaming. Some, like Ramona Pringle say that online gaming is “giving people something that they’re missing in the real world.” It remains to be seen what the potential dangers are from such online meetings translating into face-to-face rendezvouses.

The Brooklyn Museum Houses Blue-Skinned Savior, Traces of James Cameron’s Avatar10

Holland Cotter’s article in the New York Times Art and Design covers the Brooklyn Museum’s Hindu sculpture exhibition titled, “Vishnu: Hinduism’s Blue-Skinned Savior,” which is “one of a trio of male deities” in the Hindu religion. The other two are Brahma and Shiva.

According to the article, Vishnu descends to earth in several different forms, which are referred to as avatars. Much like the main character in James Cameron’s Avatar, Cotter states that the avatar, Vishnu, arrives to “get the world out of a jam.”

However, according to Cotter, the galleries feel overstuffed.
