FAZtor’s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora Congratulations to the Holy Name Sewing Group who celebrated their 50th year anniversary Thursday of last week. Thanks to Sally Harring-ton for organizing the whole event which began with a Mass with music provided by her daugh-ter Patti Ferretti and singing partner Sandy

Conolly. A dinner reception followed the Mass. Congratulations also to Dick and Madeline Morten as they celebrate their 40th Wedding anniversary this weekend. This weekend at the 9:30A.M .Mass, we welcome the Sincerity Girls Ensemble from St. Patrick Church, Rodeo-Hercules. We hope their singing will inspire our children to join our parish children’s choir that we will be forming within the next few weeks. Practices will be held every Wednesday from 4:15 P.M. -5:00 P.M. I have started presenting the changes of words in the new translation of the Mass while also providing a deeper mean-ing of the words and the gestures in the celebration of the Mass. I hope we can have a deeper understanding and meaning of what we do at Mass so we can truly consciously, actively and fully participate in the celebration of the Eucharist. I heard a lot of peo-ple say, “I went to church to hear Mass.” I hope this is just an ex-pression of what you truly are there for. We don’t just go to hear Mass, we participate and that kind of participation should be active because it is a celebration. There are also people who not only attend Mass, or “hear” Mass but actively participate in the responses and singing. They go further in their participation by being a lector, Eucharistic minister, a cantor, an altar server, an usher, etc. These people find fulfillment by not just going to the church but also helping the church by sharing their gifts and blessing and volunteering their time and expertise. Prayerfully consider your gifts. Take time to visit our Ministry Fair this weekend. When you are looking for a job, you go to a Job Fair. In Ministry Fair, we are counting on you. Ministry Fair provides you the opportunity to be of service to your church. It is our great hope to augment these stewardship effort s by increasing the levels of participation, involvement, and awareness of ministries within our parish community. The Ministry Fair is a celebration of the work of the Church. It is a “thank you” to all those who carry out the parish’s mission and at the same time highlight the services available in the parish. Some go to church to take a walk; Some go there to laugh and talk; Some go there to meet a friend; Some go there their time to spend; Some go there to meet a lover; Some go there a fault to cover;

Some go there for speculation; Some go there for observation; Some go there to doze and nod; The wise go there to worship God.

TWENTY–NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Give God Glory It’s a frustrating feeling I get all too often. I’m in a situa-tion that requires just the right response … and that re-sponse lives somewhere in my brain. Only trouble is, I don’t find it until the next day! Have you ever said to yourself, “I should have said … ” or “Why didn’t I think of that one yesterday?” Jesus was always quick on his feet and knew the right thing to say. Even when his enemies tried to trick him, the exact right words came out. He left their dignity intact while still making a pivotal point.

FIRST READING: Isaiah 45:1, 4–6 RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Psalm 96:1, 3, 4–5, 7–8, 9–10 SECOND READING: 1 Thessalonians 1:1–5b GOSPEL: Matthew 22:15–21

Comment We learn of God’s greatness in Isaiah. Not only did God create us and know us intimately, but God is so awesomely wondrous that God’s glory surpasses any treasures we know. All the greatness we know in this world, whether it be wealth, power, or fame, could only be accomplished through God’s au-thority. For this reason, Paul tells the Thessalonians that God has created them for great things and that God has the power to transform their lives. The Thessalonians, at the time of their conversion, worshiped the one God rather than the many idols they had worshiped previously. Matthew’s Gospel distinguishes worship of God from paying homage to anyone else. When Jesus was about to be tricked by the Pharisees, kind but clear words came to him. The Pharisees were able to answer their own questions as Jesus led them through an exercise in logical deduction. He asked to see a coin used for paying taxes. The coin had an impression of Caesar’s head and title. The Pharisees understood that taxes were to be paid to Caesar, and Jesus agreed. He added, however, that what belonged to God, namely glory, should be given only to God. The two payments were not to be confused.

Reflection Separation of church and state can get messy. The people directly and indirectly responsible for settling our coun-try were Godly men and women. Our coins have imprints of great leaders, but the lettering reminds us that it is “In God we trust.” The Pharisees thought singularly about taxes, but when we look at our coin, isn’t it evident that we see God in all facets of our lives, especially the governing of God’s people? As it was in the days of Caesar, God is the ruler over all people; and if authority were not given by God, rulers of any era would have no power. Things were not perfect for the settlers of our country; they made mistakes, too; but the basis of any government should be the well-being of the nation’s people. God is con-cerned for our well-being, too. When we see a conflict in what political leaders strive to do and what we know God wants us to do, we must follow the higher power. This creates conflict with-in and possibly between ourselves and those with whom we associate, but it is the conflict that calls us to action. Copyright © 2004, World Library Publications.
